Patrick Chung signs 3 yr Extension, Bolden 2 Yr Extension

He knows the system, is in his 3rd year and is dependable.

My beef is that he takes too many penalties on special teams and is mediocre at best..

You have people on here claiming him to be a "Pro Bowl" caliber STer which he isn't.. Maybe he can be if he cuts down the penalties to 1, but not before then..

Bolden is one of the last guys I want to see take a meaningful snap on offense but he's become a 2nd Matthew Slater on specialteams, and BB loves ST aces. This guy can play.

Lets all remember he broke the Chargers punter too and has blocked punts in the past in addition to forced fumbles and strong kick coverage.

I honestly am surprised at the Bolden extension. The guy is a penalty machine on special teams.. Yes, he had the one blocked punt that put SD's punter out for the season, but that's been it. Otherwise he's been wildly inconsistent and mediocre..

I would have rathered them use the money to extend Ayers since I can see Ayers taking over for Ninkovich in a year or two..

The team loves him a lot more than fans do. People were thinking that he would get cut in preseason

Bolden is a BB guy - inexpensive, capable backup at RB, a top STs guy. That's the BB trifecta. No surprise at all that he was re-signed -- a very good move (and congrats to Bolden for landing a nice payday).

Chung? A Patriot comeback player award that doesn't consider him as its winner would cheapen the award itself.

Pretty sure if he wasn't dependable, Bill wouldn't be putting him out there on 4 ST. He doesn't tolerate undependablity very well.

If Chung continues to play the way he has going forward, this is the cheapest multi year contract I have seen for a starting safety in a long time.

Bolden is a blue collar guy, who plays ST's pretty good and can run the ball. Versatile, professional and low maintainence.. a bottom end of the roster guy, and is a reason why this team is consistently good(deep roster).

Chung, pleasantly surprised, at how much he has turned his game around.. never thought it would work out.

In 2011 it could have easily been argued that Chung was the best DB on a team that went to the Superbowl. Certainly the best they had at the end of the season. (admittedly not a high bar that year ) Many, including myself, thought that 2012 would be a breakout season. It never happened, for whatever reason. 2013 turned out to be even worse for him (though pretty profitable). The Pats got him on the cheap this year and for good value the next 3 years. He's played much more like the guy we saw at the end of 2011. He might not be an all pro, but he's not being paid like one.

Boldin is even a better signing, He's turned into the 2nd best ST's player as well as being a very reliable back up RB. He's never going to be anyone's first choice to carry the ball, but you are never going to cringe when he has to be in there either. The Colts would take him in a nanosecond to be their starter

As for Ridley: I love the kid. Always have. But with Blount, Gray, and Boldin already under contract plus Vareen to sign, PLUS the ACL, PLUS the other opportunities to be the top guy, Its hard to see the scenarios that would have him back. But then again who would have predicted the return of Pat Chung.

Dude plays all 4 ST's and is an excellent 4th string RB who has had a couple of 100 yd games when given the chance in the past.

I think they got a hometown discount here on a player who is still developing in his 3rd year.

If I read Miguel's last cap post correctly, that prior to these signings, if nothing changed prior to the beginning of the league's new year, the Pats would be under water somewhere around $4MM on the 2015 cap. While small, these new signings only add more to the potential deficit. Now it should be noted that Miguel also showed how "easily" they can realistically shave over $26MM off that number and still keep just about everyone.

I only mention this in that these re-signings make it pretty clear that they are already pretty far along with negotiations with the big name FA's we have to take care of. and other guys like Mayo, DA,. and Vince who might need restructuring. It they weren't, I don't think they would be announcing these relatively small deals this early, which only add to the deficit.

He actually has more than 3 penalties on the year. He has like 5 or 6. Just because the NFL didn't attribute them properly doesn't mean they didn't happen..

Bolden is not a back-up FB. That is just wishful thinking on your part.

Bolden has been mediocre this year. Mediocre = average.. He's had 2 good plays and that's about it.

Too harsh. Your expectations are too high.

Hes being paid a bottom of the roster guy. Hes "average" at multiple roles on the team.

I think it's either going to be:

1) Free up 10 million or so (according to Miguel's scenario) by extending Revis

OR

2) Free up 20 million by letting him go



Either way, there will be money freed up from the Darrelle Revis situation, so even if they're 10 million over the cap, it will get taken care of immediately.

Vereen isn't under contract for next season.

James White (4th round, 130, 13th RB drafted) and Tyler Gaffney (6th round, 204, 18th RB drafted) are however.

So that's Blount, Gray, Bolden, White, and Gaffney, plus Develin. Already pretty full even without Vereen. Obviously nobody uncuttable but they could sign a couple UDFAs and roll into camp with that roster.

Ridley does look like a long-shot.

I don't necessarily think that extending Bolden = Ridley won't come back.

After all, Bolden is a guy who knows the system, can plug in if/when needed, and contributes on all ST units. That kind of player is needed no matter what.

Vereen and Ridley will be separate situations in my opinion.
