I'm thinking this is not a favorable sign for the health of Easley, and possibly Jones and even Siliga, none of whom has played recently. Wondering if they need bodies to rotate through the FLA heat?

Thats what I am thinking as well. Either way that brings the total to 6 DTs which isn't that outlandish.

I think it is more along the lines of just keeping the Interior DL fresh. Remember there were a lot of games where Chris Jones and Joe Vellano were playing 80-95 percent of the defensive snaps

Gotta go with JMC on this one. NE's lack of DL depth last year was a primary contributor to the defensive issues later in the year. Bill is just doing what he can to ensure that doesn't happen again.

Sure, great to have seven DT's you can rotate.
Of course, it then raises the question on the LB's. The team could easily go from playing Jones/Silinga/Jones/Ninkovich at 90% of the snaps, for example, to Mayo/Collins/Hightower playing 90% of the snaps.

Wouldn't be surprised to see one of Gaston or Quarles dropped and a LB added relatively quickly.

I'm personally hoping that Quarles sticks, though I understand anything is possible. But he has a nice skill set that would fill a need - a guy who can play the 4-3 0/1 position and generate some internal pressure, as well as the 3-tech. I would expect that Gaston is cut and hopefully signed to the PS, but again, anything is possible.

I'll take a DL with some depth that rotates to keep guys fresh and Collins and Mayo playing 90% over the opposite.

Or you could say the same about Wilfork's health.
I think it's more about a lesson learned last year than anything else really.

Wilfork has been playing, whereas Easley, Jones and Siliga have been out with injuries. If he wanted a plethora of DTs to begin with, why release Kelly? I guess we'll see Sun.

Bringing up Kelly hurts your argument more than it does ours. If it was a health thing then why release a guy that has been in the system for a year?

I see your point and have no good explanation, I just think he is heavy on DTs. I think a DT goes when the LS is activated (but perhaps a S).

Because he was older and an elevated injury risk?

Because they are all due back within a month or two (or less) and the team is higher on their long-term prospects than Kellys?

I have to admit to being confused why Kelly's release runs counter to the narrative of NE wanting more depth.

Absolutely. And if we assume that NE is going to run more 30 fronts, then only two of Mayo, Collins and HT are on the field in the base anyway, so overuse isn't that big of a concern. Even more so if Flemming can get on the field for 10-15 snaps a game.

BOLD ASSERTIONS

1) We won't have 7 DT's on the 53 for Game 5.

2) We will not have a 7 man rotation or even a 6 man rotation at DT.

3) No more than 5 DT's will be active in any of the 16 season games. I think that 8 DL's is plenty for a game.

Too many DTs & Safeties, not enough Pass-Rushers & coverage LBs.

Both released per Field Yates on Twitter.

Damn. Thought Gaston was more of a "tryout" claim but I also thought Quarles was more of an "upgrade the 53 man roster" claim. Oh well, could be a good sign about the DL health.

Exactly. I had no expectations for Gaston, but I had hopes that Quarles, like Worthy, might be an upgrade and someone with a decent skill set. Hope they get him to the PS, though I'm not optimistic.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Aiken and White re-signed.

The Pats seem to play this kind of musical chairs game every year. I can't figure it out. I understand that they get a quick look at a lot of players, show a little interest, and hedge their bets. But it's usually so brief that I can't imagine it does a whole lot.
