Camp Battle at WR - Kenbrell Thompkins vs Josh Boyce

No, actually. I think you're talking about the 2011 AFCCG. Slater was the only "WR" on that squad with any type of deep speed. You'll remember that they ran the same play in Week 1 of that season against Miami for, what I believe, was a 40+ yard gain.

Could have sworn there was a similar play last year too. I'll have to do some digging. If I can find something I'll post it just to confirm my own sanity.

Got it:
3rd and 3 at NE 27(Shotgun) T.Brady pass incomplete deep right to M.Slater (T.Carter)

Second drive on this play by play chart:

New England Patriots vs. Denver Broncos - Play by Play - January 19, 2014 - ESPN

LaFell is precisely what the Pats needed in the draft or in free agency. He's a big receiver who played a complementary role outside and inside for the Panthers

We know what Matthew Slater does and what his value is to the Patriots. But he's officially listed on the depth chart as a Wide Receiver: http://www.patriots.com/schedule-and-stats/depth-chart.html He is not listed with the kickers and long-snapper as special teamer.

The numbers don't work to carry seven WRs, three QBs, three TEs, four RBs and ten OL. That's 27 guys on offense. Add three special teamers and you're at 30 leaving only 23 on defense.

I understand that players are listed at a position. Larry Izzo actually played some linebacker here too.

Nevertheless, I assume when people are giving their depth charts it is for the purpose of analyzing how many spots are available and which players should fill them.

If we list slater as a receiver, then go "oh, the Patriots aren't keeping 7 WRs!" we are creating a false situation with a phantom receiver.

We will keep five or six receivers. Slater is not one, regardless of how he is listed. I'm not sure they have a listing for special teams only, do they?

Well, the 3 quarterbacks are quarterbacks, same for the TEs, the RBs, and the OL. Devlin isn't a RB either, did you count him as one?. Simply call Slater what he is and you've created one space for a receiver. You are actually carrying 4 or 5 special teamers, depending on if Ebner makes the team.

Ravens 2012 or Broncos 2013? I may have forgotten the play. I began drinking aggressively by halftime in both contests.

It was in the 1st quarter of the Bronco's game, which was scoreless at the time (9:22 mark). I remember it vividly. I cringe every time Brady goes long to Slater.

Wow, you think I do not understand progressions?

Brady is throwing to his primary receiver, who is blanketed, sometimes he fits it in, other times he doesn't. Brady would benefit in some cases to go to the next receiver. When you are AT THE GAME YOU CAN SEE THE WHOLE FIELD. YOU CAN SEE PRESSURE AND OTHER WRS.

Heck, when you are at the game, you can see the whole defense and what they are doing, playing off, zone or man, etc.....these are things you cannot tell from watching the on TV.

Yes, I think you do not understand progression if you make a comment that you are sitting in the stands and have a better idea of where to throw the football than Tom Brady.

Brady NEVER throws to a blanketted primary receiver. He just doesnt do it. You can find criticisms, but to say he has a poor idea of what open is is ludicrous. Even if you think you can see a lot from the stands.

I go to games, so no need to imply that you know something I don't.

Your point of view on this is just totally wrong.

You are saying he doesn't throw to a blanketed primary receiver? really?

I have to agree with AJ. That's what makes Brady great, is that he's so patient in the pocket. He goes through his progressions better than anyone in the game, his pocket awareness is the best ever. The only critiscm you can have on him is that he doesn't challenge corners deep, but i think that has more to do with lack of a deep phsycial WR since Moss left. Rodgers has the best deep ball in the game and I'll concede that Rodgers is better there, but everywhere else i take TB. In 2010 he had 4 int's, which is unheard of with the amount of throws he was making.

Yes that is exactly what I am saying. Brady NEVER throws to his first option if that receiver is covered. Its not even debatable.
You must be thinking of Mark sanchez and typing Brady.

You know, maybe I just have one or two times stuck in my head where the threw to Deon Branch or Welker on a slant when the guy was ridiculously covered and I have inflated in my head to being too often. It is like complaining that your luxury car doesn't also have a flat screen tv in it....

I don't know if anyone has said this, but the PFW guys seem to have loved Boyce in OTAs and luke warm on Thompkins. But performances in OTAs really aren't much of a measuring stick.

Thompkins is still double-catching stuff, that is very bad.

Especially since I'll often read one reporter who will say something like, "Boyce looked great in this session, crisp out of his routes with clean catches." Then another reporter watching the same session will say, "Boyce looked lost out there and hasn't shown signs of that second year leap."

And without being able to see them myself, I have no idea who had the more accurate report.

Well, in Boyce's case all of them said the same thing. So there is probably a near universal opinion on him, but it doesn't mean much in shells.

Thanks. I remember that play now. Those bombs to Slater say more about the WR position in both of those years than they do about Slater. That's why this team could really use Boyce coming on.

Right, I was just using those as hypothetical examples because it's Friday and I'm blanking on any real ones. The games can't get here fast enough for me.

FYP

Is it just me or does anyone else get wicked pissed when Josh pisses away a possession calling a deep pass to Slater on a go route that Brady misses or Slater Kung Fu fights the ball?

He does have at least one career touchdown that I've seen! But lol - "Kung Fu fights the ball".

I think the most dynamic offense we can field would be –

QB – Brady
RB – Vereen
X-WR – Dobson
Z-WR – Boyce
Slot WR – Edelman
Y-TE – Gronkowski

I would mix LaFell in as a joker tight end, as well as backing up Dobson and Boyce. Amendola would backup Edelman in the slot.

With Boyce on the field you have a player with 4.3 speed that can stretch a defense out from that Z-WR position, Edelman and Amendola do not offer that when they lineup at the Z-WR.

Change never to rarely. He misses wide open players on occasion and throws to his first read who is covered.

Rarely. Not never.
