Its a luxury pick that not many teams can afford to take. Fortunately for us, we can. If it doesn't work, we'll draft another QB, and JG will go down as another horrible second round pick. If it does pan out, we get a franchise QB.

I dunno about you, but I'd rather have the next Tom Brady as opposed to the next Hoo-Man.

You already have a franchise QB, maybe it would make sense to better protect him and/or give him better receivers to throw to. How do you know JG won't wind up being the Hoo-Man of QBs?

As far as "luxury picks", please tell me exactly what one is and when it's appropriate to use, I'm waiting.

3 interior OL picked in this draft.....3 WRs added last year.....what rookie receivers are going to make an impact on this team?

You can pick 100 interior OL, it doesn't matter if they're crap players.

Stork will probably beat out Wendell, which is no great feat. Fleming is a waist bender who I think will have big problems at the next level and Halapio is a camp body IMO.

If Brady was in his early 30's then I'd be ticked off at drafting a 2nd rd QB, but he's not, and the end is near. Nows the time to draft.

JG in the late second is a luxury pick. As was Collins last year. Considering we had Mayo, Spikes,Hightower, and Fletcher on the roster.

So now your an expert at projecting O linemen???? Great........

Ok, so I'm not allowed to have an opinion on players? How do you know about my skill at assessing an O-lineman's ability?

What's the point of posting on a discussion forum but to give you opinion?

Suppose we don't draft now, so what?

I totally agree snake. Hopefully at least Fleming can b coached to bend properly and make a fine guard. But I totally agree u can draft 100 olineman n what good is it if neither r standouts. BTW doesn't take n expert to see they lack standout skills. What good will garappolo b if the online six and the wr's r short slow limited or injured. I mean how many qbs can function carrying a terrible online and wr corps. He will just look like a bust. Former top drafted qbs that has underperformed on terrible teams with terrible supporting casts usually make grear backups n starters eventually. Where would files be had the jags or vikes had drafted him. Bad teams bad systems create busts. Gp or any qb that takes over for brady if injured or when retired would struggle badly with this offense. I don't think there is a qb in the NFL that could flourish with this offensno The offense would be bottom 5 like the defense.

By the end of next season come playoffs if we make it that far. A young elite talented will be contributing more on this offense come playoff time than any wr on this roster. And be the clear most dangerous wr we have. Lee,Latimer,Robinson,Richardson, bryant. Even Ellington.Dobson is a decent talent but nothing to write home about and is more hope than expectations so far. The pass rush is anemic I don't care bout sack numbers. There is no consistent qwik twitch rushers to generate heat. Jones is OK but more of a complimentary pass rusher than the man. More of a Chris long than rob Quinn or Justin Houston. Quinn I had mancrush on in that draft. Wanted to trade up badly.

My last point. Why not trade up to get a player u rate high n believe that he will b a standout. Example marquise Lee who I think is a good as any wr was sitting there several picks into the second. Y not surrender a fourth rounder or 2 fourth rounders or even a third to move up to select him or any other top player. Wouldn't u rather have a pro bowler than 2-3 role player s that come a dime a dozen. That is so frigging ******ed. Let's stay put and watch the players we really trust to be a future standouts and draft 3 useless role players that come a dime a dozen. Pro bowlers r irreplaceable, worth their weight in diamonds.role players r everywhere. Nobody on the planet can replace tom Brady or JJ watt or an green. So y not package stork, halepino n fleming up and move up for a high quality dominating lineman. A red flag is when the best that can be said about a lineman is he plays intelligent and tough.translation, he doesn't kick *** but he does his best. Screw that, let's get an online man that can take it to a dominant defender and punch him back in the mouth. A tough try hard boxer who is smart n takes a good punch puts up a decent fight but if he lacks ability he gets his *** his kicked by the middle rounds. Sound familiar. We don't want that guy when going for the championship.
Collins was not a luxury pick he was making up for 2 fat slow mistakes called spikes n high tower. This is a passing !league and neither r mentioned when discussing the top lb"s. Hightower is a bust, not labeling him that yet is delaying the inevitable. Broadcasters routinely call him out for being to slow and badly lacking any explosion at all. BUST! As soon as the excuses stop the team can move on
Gp could b a very productive qb one day but not with this cast. We need playmakers first for the qb we have. Did bill really think he could get a qb that can carry a terrible offense. I mean come on edelman was our #1wr. Who could work with

What the heck did you think this draft was all about?

This draft gave Brady 6 more Offensive weapons or players protecting him. BB added only 3 to the Defense that I believe is arguably the best since the SB winning clubs. You could even argue that prospectively this Defense could be the best BB has ever fielded.

Suppose we don't draft now, so what?

1.Then we'd obviously have an enormous hole at the all important position of backup QB when the season is over due to the Mallett situation. I don't think there was ever that good of a chance of Mallett having his contract re-upped.

2.To take it one step further, we needed to draft someone this year, so that they could have a reasonable time period of 1 year to allow him the opportunity to pick up our system, the routine, etc. It's not very reasonable to expect a rookie QB to have immediately stepped into the system in only a few months, had we waited until next spring to draft him.

3. This is the 3rd cycle in a row where Belichick has spent a high round draft pick at the backup QB position, as the pattern states that it's been an every 3 year event since 2008. It wasn't too hard to predict the selection of backup quarterback. Even though we've had some success with Brady, Cassel, and Hoyer at the late round level, there is certainly an obvious dropoff in odds as each and every round goes past. Belichick has made it well known that he would rather have the opportunity to choose from the top prospects, than try and repeatedly catch lightning in a bottle.

EXACTLY what is a "luxury" pick?

Understanding that you weren't asking my personal opinion, I believe that when you repeatedly are drafting years ahead with younger players in the pipeline, and also have the high majority of positions and starters already filled ahead of time, one can reasonably argue that we were certainly in a position of luxury for some of our picks this year. If you take the excellent depth of the entire draft into account, this means that Belichick was able to roll the dice a bit more due to the value that could be had later in the process.

The 2014 period of free agency (Revis, Browner, LaFell) was also quite helpful in addressing any holes that we had just as well, since there is a 2 pronged approach in the spring via the draft + FA. We were relatively aggressive in that regard with some bigger splashes than in most "normal" years.

If you want to even take it one step further, no one (and I mean--no one) was expecting a 4th round pick as a compensatory selection either. All of the experts such as Miguel and Jason were expecting a late round choice that occurred in the 6th round or so, as this was the highest compensatory pick that we've had in awhile. The addition of that pick allowed us to have 5 selections in the top 140 players of arguably the deepest draft in at least ten years, if not more.

And just to wrap it up---we have enormously talented players who are coming back from injury that did not contribute to the 2013 team which includes: Mayo, Kelly, Wilfork, Gronkowski, Vollmer, and Armstead. Again...not too many positions or starters that weren't already penciled in ahead of time, especially after the period of free agency.

I think a much more appropriate question would be "how didn't we sit in a position of luxury" as it pertained to the 2014 draft this spring?

Stork last year won the award for being the best Center in college football, while Halapio and Fleming were starters at big time successful college football programs. Only reason you labeled them as "crap players" is solely because of where they were drafted. You know nothing about them.

You want to crap on the JG pick by saying they could have gotten someone, for example like Martin from USC, who you just think is better than Stork, because the Mel Kiper and Todd McShays of the world puts them ahead in their player rankings. I'm willing to bet my house your only means of grading O lineman is looking at player rankings, then jumping on YouTube, and looking for highlights ...

And I'm sorry but I call bull **** when I see it.

I know besides punter and kicker, the one position/s that the normal fan can give a crap about in the mid rounds in the draft are interior O linemen. Esp considering when watching a live game 99.9% of the time our eyes are on the ball, not in the trenches.

EXACTLY what is a "luxury" pick?

Picking a Garrapollo when you have Brady and Mallett

Picking an Easley when you have Wilfork, Kelly, Siliga, (hopefully Armstead)

Picking a Jaime Collins when you have Mayo, Hightower, and Spikes

Picking a Solder when you have Matt Light and Sebestian Vollmer.

Do you see the trend???

You're telling me what the Patriots did, you're not telling me exactly what a luxury pick is. If you can't define a term you probably shouldn't use it.

I do look at highlights when nothing else is available but I try to rely on regular plays, I want the good, the bad, and the ugly. I don't care where a player is drafted nor do I care about their college success, I care about how their skills project to the next level. Tebow was an incredibly successful college QB but it was pretty apparent, to those with who weren't caught up in hype, that he would fail in the NFL.

Do you want a full definition for it?

Garopollo being selected early is a bit of misconception, he was drafted at the very end of the second round. Ryan Mallett in 2011 was drafted in the beginning of the third round at #74. We didn't pick again until #105 so had we held off on drafting Garopollo we would have been using a later pick than we had in the past on our backup QB.

I would not put any eggs in the Garopollo being the heir apparent to Tom Brady basket just yet. Right now he is heir apparent to Ryan Mallett, and his tenure with us could very easily end with a handful of regular season throws as well.
