Edelman offered 3-year deal, he opts to test free agency

Very astute. It's possible that every time Edelman hears a report like Hawkins to the Browns, he gets a little anxious and quietly curses New England for putting him through this.

I want him back, but I think the odds get longer as he goes from team to team, in a weird way.

Heard that Manny Sanders was talking to New England. They don't need him in for a visit likely, since they went through that last year.

I want Edelman, but I'm thinking Smith goes to Baltimore and we get Sanders.

Did you hear this recently, 50? From a halfway reliable source?

I wouldn't mind Sanders myself, although I'd prefer to probably just keep Edelman.

There is no indication that he feels 'disrespected'. Go out, try the market. I'm beginning to accept that my binkie is gone but it's going to be about money and fit, not any acrimony to the club.

It'll be about acrimony. Just like it was with Talib. He took a 3 year deal from the Broncos (with three fake years tacked on the end) because he felt "disrespected". He sounded like a moron talking about how he didn't feel wanted in New England...

Edelman's "disrespect" is already baked into the cake, from the one-year deal he got from the Pats for 2013.

I don't remember, Sup - I was clicking through Chatsports or Yardbarker or one of those. The article was about Edelman or Smith or the Pats remaining needs...it was a throwaway line about Sanders talking to the Pats.

It wasn't Fansided or one of the blog sites or anything like that, but it wasn't Reiss, either. Seemed legit, and makes sense.

Last I heard Sanders was visiting Kansas City Friday then possibly the Jest

Yeah, I hadn't heard anything about us yet either, but it would certainly make sense to have as some kind of fallback option, not to mention the writing on the wall from last year's offer as well.

Of course, maybe Belichick will zag in a different direction altogether, and attempt to bring in more of an outside receiver, but I'm thinking a guy like Edelman, Sanders, or Smith would be appropriate for our type of offense--if not 2/3

Instead of focusing on Edelman, I'd like to see the Patriots looking at:

James Jones
Miles Austin
Steve Smith
Jerricho Cotchery
Nate Burleson

And, when it comes to looking at trash heap reclamation guys who'd have to be willing to sign the "prove it" deal:

Kenny Britt

I'd pass on Sanders, and I'm confident that some more worthy receivers are going to kick loose after the draft.

Miles Austin...ick

He had hamstring problems last year, but he's a versatile receiver who had 66 catches in 2012.

I'd have no problem seeing Miles Austin brought in at a reasonable price, but it'd have to be pretty cheap/incentive laden.

He had the same hamstring problems in 2011 as well, so that's really 2 of the past 3 yrs with the same issue.

As long as they bring in good competition as opposed to last year, I'm fine with whatever as a fan.

Austindola?..really??

we'll get buried in another avalanche of "He has to go!!!" threads at the first cramp...

We're talking about either an 'added' WR4 or an Edelman replacement. In either case, an Iron man is not required in order to be an upgrade. Austin has four 16 game seasons in 8 years. That certainly compares favorably to Edelman's one time in 5 seasons.

Yeah just not big on the hamstring issues but of the guys you mentioned he's the youngest I believe. It's a good list of guys that won't break the bank but will run good routes and might stick I think one will end up here.

I don't think anyone is wanting to give him lots of money, but he's certainly as good as some of the other reclamation projects out there right now.

As long as it's not a 6 year 57 million dollar contract with 26 million guaranteed, we should be okay.

That's always been on my mind w/Edelman. He has had injuries that have kept him out of games all throughout his career till last season. Don't remember what his injuries have been (whether it was bad luck or just being prone to injury).

When only one other team even brought him in for a visit, and even they never made him an offer. I doubt Edelman took disrespect from that- if he did then he is not a smart man.

I think the same thing is happening as last year. He thinks he can get significantly more than the Pats are offering, but now that he's on the market he's realizing that this isn't the case. My guess would be that the offers he's getting are either about comparable to the Pats' offer or are better by a relatively small margin. I dont blame him if he ends up chasing top dollar, though, and if he's gone I won't worry about it. He's a good player, but as a WR he's plenty replacable

Cotchery only averaged 37 yds per game last year and hasn't had a very good year since 2009 really. Not too sure about him.

James Jones, Smith and Burleson would be good though. Austin kind of scares me because his stats last year are pretty bad and whenever I watched a Cowboys game I never noticed him.

Any reasons for not including Jason Avant, Jerome Simpson or Lafell on there?

Perhaps Sidney Rice could be a guy on one of those "prove it" deals as well?

Sure, I mean....if you look past the 10 touchdowns and 50 catches, of course.

What kind of better "value" signing could you imagine for a guy who's proven to be a reliable possession receiver who's tough and dependable? It's so far up Belichick's alley it's not even funny.

The problem is that Pittsburgh is reportedly doing everything not to let him go, especially since they are probably losing Sanders.

No one is saying that we're expecting him to be the WR1 or WR2.

With $30M in cap space there is really no reason that we cannot retain one of our most productive players from last season. Considering Edelman has been on the market for almost 3 days it would appear teams are not baking the Brinks truck up to his front door.

No Brinks trucks, maybe, but plenty of brinks-manship. There's a group of shifty little WRs on this year's market -- Edelman, Hawkins, Smith, Sanders. And there's a group of suitors. If you're not the first choice of one of the most eager and free-spending suitors, you could end up better off by waiting until their first choice signs elsewhere.
