I think it the Pats bring back Talib and sign Revis, then fill in the rest of the needs they become immediate SB favorites.
The pass rush immediately becomes better. Arrington/dennard/ryan become nickel and dime options, and we can play a defense that locks down the other teams top WRs and we can put McCourty man on man with any receiving TE.
We become a dominant D, and Brady even without new weapons with win with that.

So, the scenario is something like this.
Trade for Revis. Immediately guarantee 10 mill of his salary to cut his cap # to 8 mill. Guarantee 8 more next year for a 10 mill cap #, with 14 mill unamortized pushed into 2016.
Talib 5/50 with a 15 mill sb
Cap hits are 5,7,13,13,13

Both are managable cap #s the next 2 years at a conbined 13 and 17 mill.

In 2016, assuming no other alternative arises (such as bloating of the cap making their numbers reasonable) cut them both, eat 23 mill in one shot and accept 2016 is the cost of going for it in 2014 and 2015 and take a one year it to retool.

Thoughts?

When you say "immediately guarantee 10 mil", do you mean additionally because he's already guaranteed 16m in the first year if we trade for him (I think).

When I read the thread title, I thought it was going to be a rant against offering a long-term deal to "Minitron."

This is a very doubtful proposal.

I'm definitely down for this and have argued something similar before. I doubt BB is though.

If Gronk stayed healthy for once that team would have a shot at 16-0.

Maybe just to be safe then, they should sign Jimmy Graham as well.

I could only dream of a scenario that would see both Revis and Talib added to this defense. But what a dream that would be.

Why trade for someone who is about to become a FA tomorrow at 4pm?

No he has a contract for 3 mill in reporting/ work out bonusses and 13 mil in salary.
I'm saying guarantee 10 of it, to spread it on the cap at 2 mill a pop for 5 years.

So that you get his rights instead of having to fight the other 30 teams for him.

I don't think the Pats could get both Talib and Revis, but CSNNE is reporting Talib's camp is shocked that he isn't getting offers. He may end up coming far cheaper than people expect. If his value drops, the Pats might be able to get both.

From some of the rumblings, the Pats may be a bit of more player in free agency than we expected, but I don't know if they would tie up all their money at CB. I wouldn't be shocked if Revis is on the Pats this year, but I would be if Revis AND Talib were.

While the downside is that you do have to fight the other teams, you also lose nothing via the FA route.

But if you do trade for him, you have to lose something for what is essentially another one year gamble, unless he could be persuaded to change the parameters of his contract as part of the trade.

Because...........

I would love it but Bedard thinks the time to get Revis has passed

Free agency 2014 live blog | The MMQB with Peter King

The Patriots could make a run, but you’d think they’d have to go the trade route because they’re not going to get into a bidding war over Revis. That’s not their style. They would prefer to get him in the fold, convert the $13 million base salary into a bonus for the first season, and believe they can convince him to rip up the deal after tasting success in New England. Also, considering Licht owes Bill Belichick for hiring him after being fired in Philadelphia, you’d suspect Licht would have given Belichick the first chance at Revis, and an opportunity to acquire the cornerback before this all became public. That’s more Belichick’s method of operating in situations like this. And that time has passed.

If you're restructuring $10M into a signing bonus in 2014 and $8M into a signing bonus in 2015, then he has a $20M cap hit in 2016 with $12M in dead money if you cut him. Brady is still your QB at that point, and you're going through free agency either with $20M allocated to one guy or $12M allocated to one guy who isn't on the team. It's borrowing cap from Brady in 2016 to use in 2014. You might as well just tell Brady to retire after 2015 if you've decided that surrounding him with top talent now is worth handicapping his surroundings in 2016.
