Next Stop, the Underwear Olympics

Remember Pat's meetings with prospects and actual selections have no correleation. Pats will select at least three players who were not on anyones radar.

It's a good indication of which positions they are targeting which is what I'm interested in.

I'm surprised he only measured in at 6'3", he was listed (and looks) 2-3 inches taller.

I agree. Slightly disappointed by that. Long arms makes up for it a bit though.

NFL Scouting Combine - NFL.com

Feb. 22-25

Who's ready for the combine? A magical place where the Stephen Hills of the world go from a 4th round projection to a late 1st, etc.

What players do you think will blow up the combine, skyrocketing up boards in the process, and vice versa?

I wonder what percentage of OL at the combine are faster than Brady.

What it can tell you is someones commitment to the weight room. 20 reps isn't a huge concern for me with Swanson because of the reasons you mentioned. One guy whose bench is a huge red flag (not that he needed any more) is Colt Lyerla with 15. He hasn't been playing football so the only thing he has had to worry about is preparing for the combine so he has no excuse for not putting up a much better number. It shows he hasn't been working hard enough and you really have to question his commitment to football. It's not like he has long arms even, less than 33". I can't see how he is draftable.

Warren Sapp only did 16. I think we can assume that there's only a correlation, at best.

Justin Ellis at 334 pounds. The kid is gonna be good.

Joel Bitonio passes the vertical test at 30.5. Potential second rounder?

Dane Brugler ?@dpbrugler 1m
Easley said he's never watched a nfl game from start to finish. Said he'd probably flip to cartoons

Brugler ?@dpbrugler 2m
When asked to compare himself to a NFL player, Easley answered: "I don't watch a lot of football"

LOL that's hilarious.

Look for low to mid 1.6 10 yard splits from the TEs. Ertz was 1.62, Eifert was 1.66 last year

Amaro weighed in at 265 and ran a 4.66 on his first attempt

4.59 Decent for Burton. Interesting offensive piece.

Also from Josh Norris, some DL/LB weigh in measurements (all heights are rounded):

DTs:

- Will Sutton: 6' 303#; 31 1/4" arms, 10" hands
- Dominique Easley: 6'2" 288#; 32 7/8" arms, 9 3/4" hands Longer arms than I expected
- Timmy Jernigan: 6'2 299#; 31 5/8" arms, 9 5/8" hands
- Louis Nix: 6'2" 331#; 33" arms, 9 7/8" hands SOLD. Down from the 350 he played at.
- Kelcy Quarles: 6'4" 297#; 33 1/4" arms, 9 3/8" hands

DEs:

- Aaron Lynch: 6'5" 249# (so much for the 260#+ estimates); 34" arms, 10 1/4" hands Who thought he was that heavy?
- Stephon Tuitt: 6'5" 304#; 34 3/4 arms (!), 10" hands About what I expected
- Kony Ealy: 6'4" 273#; 34 1/4" arms, 9 1/2" hands
- Scott Crichton: 6'3" 273# (10# heavier than listed); 32 3/4" arms, 10 1/8" hands
- Demarcus Lawrence: 6'3" 251#; 33 3/4" arms, 11" (!) hands

LBs:

- Khalil Mack: 6'3" 251#;. 33 1/4" arms, 10 1/4" hands
- Anthony Barr: 6'5" (!) 255# (!); 33 1/2" arms, 9 3/8" hands Is this good or bad news to you, Mayo?
- Carl Bradford: 6'1" 250#' 30 1/4" arms, 9 1/2" hands
- Ryan Shazier: 6'1" 237# (!); 32 3/8" arms, 10" hands Woah
- CJ Mosley: 6'2" 234#; 33 3/8" arms, 10 3/4" hands
- Shayne Skov: 6'2" 245#' 30 5/8" arms 10" hands

Matt Patchan 1.59 10 yard split for a 6'6" OT. Been touting him for a bit. Lane Johnson had a 1.61 last year.

Stephon Tuitt nearly 35" arms. :rocker:
32" vert too. Hitting some Patriot check marks.

You sold me on Patchan. Time to see the film.

The bench press measures endurance rather than functional strength. If you think about it, a lot of a lineman's strength comes from the core and legs which aren't measured by a bench press.

Not only that but high reps-low weight also measures stamina and strength. If you only wanted to know strength you'd want to see their maximum at one rep.

I agree. Slightly disappointed by that. Long arms makes up for it a bit though.

Norris says 6'5". He doesn't look 6'3".

I missed Shazier's measurements ( see post above). As Merrill says, "woah!". That's good for him.

So Ebron with an easy hand timed 4.50.

That should nail down the coffin unless he punches a cop before the draft.

4.47 for Lyerla

Why would I discount film on a guy to look at various data points which might correlate to his ability to play football? I've seen film on Lyerla and that tells me what I need to know as a player, the only question about him is his mental/emotional state.

It's very possible that Lyerla simply isn't good at benching, which isn't a big deal to me. If he's not training that's a different story, but I can find out whether or not he works hard at training/practice by talking to his former teammates and coaches, yet again, why discount direct evidence in favor of potential correlation?

This is the problem, I don't think you can. This is a guy that quit on his team and since then the only thing he has had to focus on is preparing for the combine (because he declined rehab). None of them know what he has been doing since he left the team and the evidence so far certainly isn't good. The combine has been equated to being an open book test, well with the equal lowest total bench press for TE's I think Lyerla failed. And it's not like he had any excuses to not prepare for it like playing football or graduating.

The other huge concern is this was one of the red flags at Oregon. He was known to not follow the coaches guidance or lift with the rest of the team in the weight room and did his own thing. For most players I think the bench is quite useless unless it's really low, considering Lyerla's situatin I think it's actually quite significant and telling.

4.85 is bad for Rodgers. Fiedorowicz is faster. Disappointed that ASJ and Niklas aren't running.
