As for the "back" part, apparently Lombardi did some amount of consulting for the Patriots when he was with NFLN. I have no idea what that actually entails.

I'm wondering if Caserio is planning on leaving next season for a full GM job (that's better than the Dolphins gig). Lombardi could be spending the year as a "consultant" and take over the role next year.
