The Patriots were so concerned about Brady's feelings that they cut loose from his all-time Binkie even after TFB had made a huge adjustment to his contract.

And the Patriots were very lucky that no one took Edelman. If that happened, the decision to cut loose that all-time Binkie would had bitten them really hard. Like no-playoffs hard

A player of his caliber? He was 4th in receptions in the entire NFL. That is not good enough? How many drives did Edelman keep alive? The Patriots would've struggled to make the playoffs without him. What guarantee is there that a FA WR will perform like him?

We disagree on the ability level of the player and how much of his production would be reasonably replaceable.
If you feel Edelman is the 4th best WR in the NFL, then I see why you would spare no expense.

Here's a question I just thought about, given the way this thread's gone. If you're Denver, why wouldn't you pay Edelman $6m-$7m instead of paying Decker $8m-$9m?

1. One million dollar salary difference isn't that big of a difference.

2. Familiarity. Manning is familiar with Decker, the organization is familiar with Decker, the comfort factoring can't be understated.

3. This is pure speculation on my part, but maybe Denver prefers the bigger receivers? Decker is 6'3 where as Edelman is 5'10. If they're going up against the Seahawks again or another team with a physical secondary, they probably are more interested in bigger guys who can push back opposed to a smaller one. Even though Decker and company just got abused four days ago.

That's all I can think of at this stage. It would be interested to hear everyone else's take.

Wow, I didn't think that was how free agency worked. Why did he sign for less than a million last year? Is that all he wanted? If I were a free agent I'd ask for 20 million a year, that's what I would want. Free agents can get what they want apparently, not what the market bears.

does anyone really think teams are going to break the bank for Edelman?

1. He is unproven. This is his FIRST successful year as a WR(unless you count his rookie season)

2. He hasnt proven to be durable through a 16 game season other than this year.

3. he is a slot receiver. and those dont command much on the open market.

on the other hand, welker received an offer of 6million$ after 5years of productivity, durability, 100+ catch seasons.

I just dont see it happening.

In an offense with a WR1/WR2, a TE and a Slot WR (also a receiving RB), what of significance does Edelman bring to the table? I'm not asking this to bash Edelman. I can think of at least two things that you've not mentioned.

I ust think that, if people want to talk about Edelman's worth, we should be talking about what he brings to the table.

Gronkowski will be fine if he healthy. It is very reasonable to expect Dobson to make a 2nd year leap.

Amendola is not what people think. The average NFL career based on studies is 6.86 years. Amendola entered the NFL in 2008 which makes 2014 his 7th season. I have heard of the 2nd year leap but the 7th year leap isn't one I have heard of. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck it must be a duck.

He's a proven commodity in a difficult system to learn who can line up all over the field and run all the routes required. He's a terrific PR to boot. Having said that if he asks for 7 mil I'll drive him to the airport myself. 2-3. Mil a year absolute max.

Versatility is one that I would point to right away. I don't think he's a great slot receiver, and I don't think that he's a great outside receiver, but he has the ability to be at least competent in both positions, at least against non-elite DBs.

That is NOT the Patriots offense of the next season. The TE can't stay healthy, the Slot WR can't stay healthy, WR1/WR2 total unknowns without Edelman, the receiving RB also can't stay healthy, not to mention that half the time he has stone hands.

There are rumours of 5-7M a year for Edelman. That would put him in the Brian Hartline/Wes Welker/Danny Amendola group (between 20-25 in terms of WR salary).

He's entering his prime. He's going to get paid probably in that range. Maybe a little bit less if it's long-term and more guarantee money.

He'll be our #1 WR target (Gronk if healthy will be #1). He finished 4th in receptions. His 2nd half production was top 5 in yards and receptions. His play in the playoffs was exceptional. He is a great punt returner and most importantly Brady trusts him.

I know people like Deus Ire hate him along with the DA lovers, but i'll be very happy when we re-sign him.
