It will be interesting to see what McDaniels does in this situation - how he looks to RBs to serve as pass catchers and may keep others in for pass protection - and how diverse the offense winds up looking.

McDaniels/Brady are, IMO, going to need to establish a diverse, spread offense that constantly leaves Ds off kilter. Prior to yesterday Ds knew they could simply key in on Gronkowski and Edelman - though in both cases were still unable to stop them.

If McDaniels is smart he'll take advantage of the fact that Ds now generally don't know what's coming their way.

That's my hope anyways.

Very we'll said, exactly on point. The loss of Gronk COULD make the Patriots harder to defend, but that's up to Tom.

I do find it absolutely hilarious everywhere you read NFL mediots act like losing Gronk is it for the Patriots. It's a clear disrespect of Brady.

Like that hack florio in his power rankings today.
No Gronk? No problem. As long as the goal is to not make it to the Super Bowl.

Now i'm not saying he can even come close to replacing Gronk. But Brady targeting Vereen after Gronk went out, 9 for 13 126 yards.

So it's not like Vereen had the game he had because he was a beneficiary of Gronk being on the field and opening stuff up for him.

I voted for Toast, obviously. Gronk is the final nail in 2013.
Sorry, but that's just the way it is.

Let's see how he offense looks next week before calling them "toast" you still have Brady. And its not like he's totally devoid of targets once Dobson and thompkins come back

Little chance UNLESS there's good injury luck from here on out -- but that could happen.

  • The secondary was very good at one point, and none of those guys is out for the season. Indeed, if the others were fairly healthy we could afford to lose one CB, as long as it wasn't Talib.
  • Spikes can be a serious asset in run defense -- but he isn't right now. A recovered Gregory would help a little too.
  • A healthy Amendola would help the offense a lot.
  • The OL could conceivably get its act together, but doesn't have a lot of margin for further injury.

Super Bowl win is now inevitable

Watch NFLN.....saying the same thing.

All the idiots are now in agreement.

Pre-Gronk was also sans Vereen/Amendola....somehow all the points were scored after Gronk left on Sunday.

Unless Houston and Cleveland make the playoffs......makes zero sense to ignore the Denver game.

Past does not mean anything right now. Those teams with those teams were healthier and had better defenses.

So............2010/2011/2012 had better defenses?

It begs to wonder if some of you really believe the nonsense some of you post.

Are you padding the resume for JI?

Just to note, no mediots were calling the ravens a superbowl contend or last year or the giants a year before...both teams limped into the playoffs and hen went on a run...the NFL playoffs is a strange season where generally its all about who gets hot and lucky at he right time.

Every year the pundits pick the two top teams in the AFC/NFCand say "those are your sSuperbowl lteams" and EVERY single year one or both of those teams get upset and they act surprised.

All we have to hope for is some health and some luck and we can make a run here..because once the playoffs start ANYTHING can happen and I guarantee its not going to be as cut and dry as "oh its Seattle and Denver don't bother to watch" because WHEN has the playoffs played out exactly like the standings?

fwiw The team with the best record hasn't won the Super Bowl in like the last 8+ years. So if the Pats play the Seahawks in the Swamp they are virtually guaranteed to win. Especially if they're down 24 at the half, or 11 with 1:30 remaining.

I think they have a one-in-a-million shot so I'm saying there's a chance.

Mathematically, a team WITH a bye has a 1 in 4 chance of going to the SB. Picking 2 teams with a bye gives you a 1 in 16 chance of being right. Those are the best odds. Of course the expected teams are not going to both make it every year, but that doesn't mean they do not have the best chance.

lost in all the Brady comeback lore is the when the defense needed a stop most, once again they failed. How do you let a team convert a 3rd and 17? They can't get off the field on 3rd down against essentially a 2 player offense, I don't see them beating a team like Cincinnati or Baltimore/KC.

Game Trends: Patriots in tough spot without Rob Gronkowski - CBSSports.com

What are the Patriots without Gronkowski?
The Patriots were 5-1 to start the season without Rob Gronkowski and 5-2 with him. Gronk covered up a defense that was decimated by injuries. Before Gronk played the Patriots were giving up 19 points a game. After he got back on the field which coincided with the losses of Vince Wilfork, Tommy Kelly and Jerod Mayo the defense was giving up 27 points a game. Now the Patriots face the same defensive problems without Gronk to overcome them.

In the red zone the Patriots were fourth with Gronk and 30th without him. As for passing yards per game, third with him and 19th without him. And as far as moving the chains, second with him and 16th without him. If Brady can pull off a Super Bowl run with all the adversity his team faces now than he is the MVP of the NFL.

Why are you calling out names ? JI ? Its just a discussion . I dont put much stock in the past and you do .Good for you. We are talking about the 45-6 record in december which is over 13 odd yrs . So yes we had decent defenses without these many injuries for most of these. None of that means anything this yr. If they do win out and go on to win everything it will have nothing to do with the december record. That is just MY opinion.

Dont know how a free win is not better than anything else. Bye is a free win which is almost always welcome.

Picturing a room with only one dim lamp lit. Brady, leaning forward on the edge of a sofa, staring straight ahead as a solitary tear rolls down his face and splashes onto Rob Gronkowski's MRI results on the coffee table in front of him. Softly, in the background, the song that's playing is "How Do I Live?" by LeAnn Rimes. It's corny, but Tom doesn't care. The pain is too much, the sense of loss too crushing. "How do I breathe without you, if you ever go?" Brady mouths along to the words. "How do I ever, ever survi-i-i-i-ve?" On the corner of the table, the phone is buzzing with "u doing ok?" texts from Julian Edelman, but Brady can't. It's just too soon.

Kicking two FG's inside the 5 yard line and failing to score with a chance to win equals three failed red zone chance post Gronk just against Miami. They convert either of those two and they win today. Maybe, and it's a big maybe, Dobson can give them some ability in that department with his height.
