This Patriots offense with Keenan Allen instead of Dobson

I couldn't believe we passed up on this guy in the 2nd round for Aaron Dobson. Allen is going to win NFL offensive rookie of the year. With gronk out, Allen would have been the key factor in our run to the superbowl. I remember this forum during draft day, patsfan forum members were screaming for Keenan Allen. Unfortunately, we took the wrong WR.

Who knows if Keenan Allen could even learn this offense. Really liked what Dobson was doing before he got hurt. Favorite play has to be that catch he made before the infamous hold in the endzone against Carolina. Kid has a real bright future.

Keenan Allen looks good, but so did Dobson before he got hurt, had a huge breakout game vs Pittsburgh, and then got hurt. Overall I'm very happy with the season Dobson is having.

Allen's been the better receiver as a rookie, but it's too soon to be declaring that the Patriots took the wrong receiver of the two. Clearly, neither has busted, at least to this point. The rest we'll learn moving forward.

I don't think its difficult for a Rookie WR to learn this Offense if they come from a Pro Style Offense in College. It was the Rookies who came from the Gadget Offenses in College who failed Bethel Johnson, Taylor Price and dumb as bricks Chad Johnson. On Keenan Allen it was said just before the Draft that he had some sort of knee injury that caused him to have pedestrian Pro Day. Kinda similar to Anquan Boldin look how he turned out.

He injured his knee in late October. He aggravated it in February. He reportedly wasn't yet 100% in early June, a full 7 months after the injury and over a month after he was drafted. He also was called back to Indy after the combine for extra tests on an ankle.

I think it's awfully hypocritical that Belichick has been bashed both for picking Dowling and for passing on Allen. Both had a fairly major injury their final year in college and some other more minor injury concerns, but Dowling at least showed that he was at full health before he was picked. The Patriots gambled on a healthy guy with an injury history and lost. The Chargers gambled on an still injured guy with an injury history and so far it's looking pretty good. These players that fall due to injury are almost always boom or bust though, and that's a good example.

We have Three Guys who have all shown potential the one that intrigues me the most is UDFA Kenbrell Thompkins who can already Beat Press as a Rookie. I hope him and Dobson both heal up fast because we are going to need them.

This is at least the 3rd thread on this topic. I'lll repeat what I said in the other two. I loved Allen coming out and wanted the Pats to take him. That said there's nothing saying he comes in and learns all the option routes and is on the same page as Brady. It's the Clay Mathews argument all over again. People would have been gashing him here for his lack of run support in the Pats scheme. You draft players to fit your scheme.

Allen was the consensus #1 WR in the draft. As Sciz said, injury concerns knocked him way down the board, along with a bad 40 due to the injury. (Allen was projected a mid-first rounder back in January) I can't blame Bill for avoiding another potential glass problem. 32 other teams did the same thing for two rounds.

Plus, Dobson has been pretty good for a project/high ceiling WR. Only Patterson really had a higher ceiling than him in the draft.

Plus plus, KT has a rare off the LOS burst you can't teach. I still think he could be very good if he continues to work on the rest of his game in the offseason.

I liked Allen but I think he is more of a David Givens type of receiver, and at the time, with their inside possession receivers et with Gronkowski, the prisoner, and Amendola, what they needed was a player who could stretch the field, and what they took with Dobson was a player who might take a little longer to develop but would turn into the downfield threat they needed. Beloichick took a chance on the upside and I think he was right, tthat he supplemented it with Boyce and Thompkins means they really won't need to do anything more than re-sign Edelman to have a really good receiving corps next year

This OP reminds me of the Murray vs. Ridley comparison when Murray got off to a great start as a rookie for Dallas a few years ago, everyone was saying how they could not believe we passed on Murray and how they knew he was going to be a stud.

Now look at things since the start of 2012:

Ridley – 1874 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns
Murray – 1360 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns

FYI – Murray has 7 fumbles in his career Ridley has 9… So we can shut that down at the pass

Without trying to open a can of worms about Collins, although that may be a byproduct, it seems to me that this sort of "what it?" would be better aimed at Collins, not Dobson, based upon how the various rookie seasons have played out so far.
