Welcome back Andre Carter

That was my immediate thought. I think Ninkovich might be moving back to linebacker, and it wouldn't surprise me if it's on a near-full-time basis. It's either:

1) Ninkovich is moving back to LB for a significant percentage of his snaps
2) They're discouraged with Buchanan to the point that they don't even want him in a three-man rotation at this point
3) Chandler Jones is going to be taking a lot more snaps at DT.

My guess would be that it's a combination of all three, with 1 being most prominent.

I agree with all three of your potential roles for him, but it's all contingent on him having enough left in the tank to do one or two of them. Either way, he has a much higher chance of contributing to this team than Andre Neblett did.

Of course there is a little bit of this, but could you blame the team? I'd be pretty desperate too if I lost two defensive leaders for the season and, perhaps our best defender this season, for an indefinite/yet to be determined number of games. They need a veteran presence. They need added productivity. Only time will tell how much of the latter we receive from AC, but I am not at all bothered or worried by this move. I'm actually just a tinge stoked by it, as the guy had a very productive year for the team during the first stint.

There really should be a dislike button.

How can it be desperation to replace Nesbitt with Carter? How can it be desperation for Carter to have reps instead of Nesblitt and Forston?

Why timing is right for Andre Carter's return to New England Patriots - ESPN Boston

and if you read bedard and reiss's play breakdown's from yesterday

8. For the second time in three weeks, rookie defensive end Michael Buchanan hurt the Patriots by losing discipline in his rush. This time it came on a third-and-14 play with 5:51 remaining in the quarter in which Geno Smith scrambled for 14 yards. Buchanan just shot up the field way too wide off the defensive right side, opening up a wide swath of real estate for the athletic Smith to tuck and run. It appeared the Patriots were in man coverage (maybe a switch to zone there would have been smarter), which contributed to Smith's ability to pick up the necessary yardage at the New England 10-yard line. A stop there forces a field goal. Instead, the Jets went on to score a touchdown. Buchanan's prior breakdown came on a third-and-5 play against the Bengals when Andy Dalton scrambled for 6 yards.

Decisive moments of Week 7 in the NFL | The MMQB with Peter King

Even still, the Patriots are normally so disciplined up front against an athletic passer like Smith that they can contain the run by staying in their pass-rush lanes to prevent a big hole from opening up. On this play, because of depth issues, the Patriots wound up with two rookies—tackle Chris Jones (94, playing for the injured Vince Wilfork) and end Michael Buchanan (99)—playing on the same side. In this situation players are normally coached not to rush past the quarterback on the outside, and not to get out of your lane on the inside. Here, Jones got shoved inside by left guard Brian Winters (67), and Buchanan was ridden outside by left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson (60). That left a huge hole for Smith to run through. Then in the secondary, cornerback Marquice Cole (23) and rookie safety Duron Harmon (30) were slow to react to prevent Smith from gaining the first down. Smith ended up breaking a Cole tackle and surging forward for a first down. Two plays later he scored a touchdown on a nearly identical breakdown when three second-level defenders failed to make the tackle.
probably to provide some vet presence in these situations. Also looks like armstead is not ready.

Would love to see:

Jones - Armstead - Kelly - Carter

We should be celebrating that we had a player like Carter available to us. He certainly cannot be a downgrade from Forston and Nesblet.

If Carter is able, this should be a major plus for the rest of the season, with Ninkovich moving the LB.

BTW, this is an EXCELLENT game-situational signing for this week.

Buchanan's struggles have been in maintaining his alley and setting the edge.

Tannehill is a very mobile QB.

Carter in 2011 was arguably the best edge-setter for the Patriots against the run and QB scrambles since Mike Vrabel.

I remember people calling the Talib trade desperate. I hope its desperate like that.

If Carter still has it, he shores up two issues on defense since Mayo exited. He gives us an edge setter against the run and another capable pass rusher on top of letting Ninkovich go back to OLB where he's a better cover guy than both Hightower and Spikes.

Good point, but I'm not sure that Nink has ever displayed the ability to play man to man with an athletic TE like Cumberland. He has shown to be very good in zone coverage, however.

What happened to Bequette? Isn't he our backup DE?

I think signing Randy Moss would spell out desperation this to me just spells out veteran presence for the stretch run and someone who can play inside on passing downs allowing Chandler to return to the edge.

Seriously, trying to improve a team by signing a quality veteran who knows the system isn't desperation.

Desperation would be if they signed me.

What's your time in the forty and do you hands make a loud, clanging, metallic sound when hit by a football?

I don't see a downside to this signing, but I do see plenty of potential upside. Good luck, Mr. Carter.

you say that as if we only have one "backup". You also say that as if he can't be upgraded.
