How much longer do we have to deal with Gregory?

Hated this guys game coming into the year but he has been rock solid in 2013

My feeling is most people were unhappy with Gregory last season because of his early season play when he was paired with Chung, in that role he was playing more in a free safety capacity, that is not the optimal role for Gregory. With McCourty playing that role now it moves Gregory into more a strong safety role like he played in San Diego when paired with Weddle. He is a good player who will never be an all pro but he is likely the best safety we’ve had in that role for several seasons and him and McCourty represent the best safety tandem we’ve had in probably a decade.

if you look at improved players from last year to this year Steve may easily top that list

its incredible, lets be honest, he sucked pretty bad last year...everything on the OP title is correct, and i have no idea what changed in the offseason, but its like a whole new player out there

is he as good as Devin? nope, but we have not had as good a #2 safety in a LONG time

2013 Steve Gregory is a pleasure to see on the field, whatever he did in the offseason, i hope he tells the rest of the team

...im not joking, thats legit how much this guy improved

Gregory really isn't that bad at all. Very solid player. Not a superstar, but he gets the job done.

How much longer do we have to deal with your god awful threads? You're either letting everyone know you were at the game or moaning about injuries and draft picks from half a decade ago.

I agree 100%. This is another asinine thread by someone who leads the league in whining asinine threads. Gregory's play this season has been a lot better than "decent" btw, and if you know anything about football you'd be able to recognize it.

We are getting great play from a guy without top end athletic skills and there are fans who can't help themselves but to complain. I swear there are haters who wait game after game for some play where a ball is completed to a receiver within 10 yds of a DB and then ***** about the player.

And I'm guessing the OP was talking about the last TD pass to Stills as an example of that "bad angle". Well if he had any sense he would have noticed in the replay that the Saints sent a receiver right down the seam directly at Gregory and he couldn't break off and help Dennard until Brees committed to the outside throw. Gregory did a great job getting as close to the play as he did. Haters aren't interested in understanding that OTHER teams have guys who can design plays that make it difficult for teams to cover. But haters just want to hate. They have a pathological need to blame someone for anything that goes wrong. I think it has something to do with penis size.

I'm more inclined to say he's been better than he was last year but is still a contender for an upgrade. I don't feel comfortable with him watching him whiff in run support then act as a reincarnation of Patrick Chung in pass D.

Coming from someone who's wanted Gregory cut since 2012, I can say he's been fairly decent this season. He's playing way better now than he did then.

You could do worse than 2013 Gregory. As long as he keeps playing this rock solidly, I don't have much of an issue with him. I'd still say cut him next offseason though, but that's a discussion for another day.

To be completely honest, I actually wouldn't mind in the least if Gregory were restructured/extended at a reasonable price and kept on in a safety #3/rotational role for another couple of seasons.

We could do a lot worse as a rotational/backup safety, as long as it came at a reasonable price of course.

In the meantime, I think we'd all like to see an upgrade as a starter for next season. It's certainly possible that Harmon may be able to provide that, along with another mid round pick at the position, yet again.

I liked Sanders. Will always remember his INT over manning to seal that game what 3-4 year ago?

He's the best tackler in our secondary. I'm not a Gregory fan by any stretch. But he wraps up and has no problem laying the wood. Coverage leaves a lot to be desired but his angles are not poor.

Ironic that you say you like a player who repeatedly took some of the worse angles I have ever seen.

I've always said that if you don't hear a players name mentioned in a negative light by the announcers in a game then that player must be doing an adequate job and I have yet to hear any negativity regarding Gregory yet.

Gregory will never make us forget Lawyer Milloy, but he is very serviceable and compliments McCourty as a duo very well.

Maybe the OP thinks Brandon (fly and miss tackles) Meriweather,James (slow on coverage) Sanders or James (I get injured every 2 plays) Ihedigbo back.

As long as he is no worse than the 32nd best SS we really can't complain. We can't have stars in every position in a Capped league. If you think about it, can you name 16 better SS than Gregory?

LOL I cant name 16 strong safeties, in todays NFL its a position with no glory there are no more Rodney Harrison and Troy Polamalu 100 tackle 4 sack 3 INT type player at that position anymore

Belichick said it this preseason, reliability over talent. If Gregory isn't the epitome if that I don't know who in this roster is. I'd also like to be a founding member of the Duron Harmon band wagon. I like this kid.

One thing we know about defensive backfields are the longer they play together the better they are; talent, personal football maturity, knowing the playbook and understanding the system are key...

Does anyone remember watching a DB from behind chasing a WR down the field this year??

Does anyone remember after a long gainer the DB or safety pointing to the other guy??

Our defensive backfield has more talent and has gotten better... Gregory is part of that.

If Harmon is a solid #3 safety, then safety is not one of our major weaknesses. McCourty and Gregory have played well together.

Of course we would like to have an upgrade. We always want upgrades.

For me, I would look to extend Gregory, rather than look to cut him. Gregory adds stability to the defensive backfield.

If Harmon or a draftee provide an upgrade, so much the better.

Back of the line mister. I've been high on Harmon since the draft. Happy to have you aboard though.

I didn't know that "we" had to deal with Gregory.

The secondary has been outstanding. Not sure why anyone would be knocking anyone back there, and as far as the safeties are concerend the only deep ball in recent memory was into double coverage where Dennard inexplicably missed in when in position to bat it away.

The pass D so far has allowed 55.9% complete, 4th best in the league; 2 40+ yard plays, 3rd best; 72.3 QB rating 4th best; 6.7ypa. 8th best; 6 Tds, 6th best, 7 Ints 11th best; 36% 3rd down conv, tied for 7th best;
and of course 16.2 ppg which is 4th best.

Personally, I havent had a problem with Gregory on the team since oh about....... THANKSGIVING LAST YEAR.

"He's had an interception, 2 fumble recoveries, and now a touchdown [today]" ....Gifford. :rocker:

(can't believe I was the first to mention that)

anyway my unexpert-self had the opinion he was improved over last year; glad to see some of the more knowledgeable guys could affirm that with reasoning and not just my gut feel.

still I do have to give one downside; SG does seem to hurt our guys more often than the opposing teams' guys with his hits.
