Leon Washington Cut per SMY Boston Globe

Edelman scares the crap outta me when he is back there returning punts/kicks.....alot of bobbling...and pretty occas fumbling! Dont like him nearly as much or confidently as Washington.....but obviously BB does.....

Huh? He only has 2 fumbles in his entire career and one of them was on that special play where he snuck to center and tried to take the snap.

Yeah, Edelman fumbling has never concerned me as a punt returner. I'd need to look at the #s to see if it's true, but I think Edelman is an excellent punt returner. Not a good kick returner, though -- disappointed that Washington doesn't appear to be the guy he was in that role as recently as last season.

Not that he is my ideal kick returner either, but Devin McCourty was not that bad last season, he averaged 24.2 yards per return and ran 1 kick back for a touchdown, Washington who is highly regarded as a top kick returner has a career average of 25.9 yards per return. If you factor in that it was McCourty’s first season returning kicks for us finishing 14th in the league is not a horrific showing.

I don't have a problem with DMcC's average per se, I have a problem with risking our top secondary player on the most "violent" or dangerous play in all of sports.

That said, I don't think he looked too good a lot of the time either, as he was often very tentative in his returns. When you watch the TD return vs the NYJ, he hit his hole quickly with a full head of steam and never looked back. I didn't see any other returns like that which occurred after that particular play, but maybe he was slightly tentative due to being cautious and/or slightly banged up.

Either way, I think we have other options with players that aren't nearly as important as Devin McCourty is to our team and season.

I assume he was speaking to his concerns with Edelman's tendency to fumble (or what he perceives to be his tendency to fumble) overall...not just on kick or punt returns.

If that is the case, it would make more sense and his concerns would be more valid.

Edelman has 6 fumbles in his career, 4 which have come in the past two years:

Very disappointing, although expected after his struggles in preseason. Thought he'd be a huge upgrade to our return game.

Let's see how good is gonna be our kickoff/punt returns.

Edelman is a top returner, but I don't like the idea of neither him nor Amendola returning, sounds like a time bomb.

He's arguably one of the top 10 PRs in NFL history.

Still don't understand why Vereen was never given consideration as a KOR. I think he could've been quite good at at. Had he been tried, and succeeded, as our KOR, then perhaps Sheriff Woody stays here instead of leaving for relative peanuts at SD.

Maybe Boyce is our future KOR; I would rather see him out there doing it than McCourty who,
with the lone exception of his TD v the Jesters, was one of the worst I've ever seen - even worse
than Slater.

What a bummer, I was looking forward to an improved KR game. Field position uber alles.

McCourty who,

than Slater.
McCourty with his TD:
28 returns
678 return yards
24.2 yard average
1 TD
1 fumble

McCourty without his TD:
27 returns
574 return yards
22.3 yard average
1 fumble

Slater:
28 returns
531 yards
19.0 yard average
3 fumbles

So no, you're wrong.

Really would hate to see Dmac return kicks again. He might be our 3rd most valuable player after Brady and big vince. Hopefully Boyce handles kickoffs. On a slightly unrelated note, anyone else remember this in Slater's first game of his career? "and the chiefs kick off to Slater, Slater the rookie out of UCLA, Belichick loves this kid" *Slater muffs kickoff* "Well did love this kid..." haha no hate on Slater just thought that moment was kinda funny. Shame dude can't hang on to the ball because he has great speed.

and although his time here was brief I appreciate what he did. Here's my favorite Leon Washington moment.

I remember Slater dislocating his ******* elbow and not going on IR and making it back to play that season. I dunno, never dislocated anything but I thought that was impressive as ****.

Yeah that dude's a crazy ************. Was shocked Slater didn't get IRed.

Didn't this set up a very long 3rd down conversion in OT that the Jets actually converted on the next play, which eventually led to their overtime win?

Or am I thinking of the Wilfork sack? I thought this occurred during the 2008 season when Cassel was leading the team. It was the game where Moss caught the TD to force the game into OT.

99% sure the long conversion you're talking about was in Foxboro and it sucked so bad. Like 4th and 19.

Nah you have games confused. This sack helped seal a 19-10 win. Don't remember who it was but somebody got a sack on 2nd down to set up a 3rd and long that they barely ended up getting in the thursday night game in Gillette. Thank god the OT rules have changed since then. We so would have won that game if that coin had landed heads.
EDIT:looked it up, believe it or not Pierre Woods had the sack in that 2nd jets game.

Ah, good old Pierre Woods.

I haven't yet gotten over the PTSD from the first NYG SB loss when he somehow managed to "unrecover" the recovered fumble deep in Giants territory. That's the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions the name "Pierre Woods." Talk about pathetic (me).

I wonder how Bill feels about cutting Tate in retrospect, given our troubles at KR.
