I seriously have to believe that you are so blinded by the Tebow thing that you didn't read and understand what I wrote, or understand the context of the statements.

That wasn't saying what the Pats should have done. Rather, it's stating that IF, IF, IF the Pats were in a "win now" mode as SB1 claimed, that's the type of thing they would have done.

Same thing as the first. I wasn't saying that the Pats should have grabbed either player. I'm saying that IF, IF, IF the Pats were in a "win now" mode, one of those guys are the types the Pats would have brought in.

Now, as I've been arguing the entire time that the Pats and Belichick AREN'T in a "win now" mode., I definitely wasn't advocating what's expressed in those two statements that you quoted.

Does that clear it up some ?
The New England Patriots are in a freakin' WIN MODE RIGHT NOW!

If the New England Patriots were not in a WIN MODE RIGHT NOW they would have not re-signed the following offensive players:

Sebastian Vollmer
Julian Edelman
Michael Hoomanawanui (RFA)

or added the following offensive players in unrestricted free agency:

Danny Amendola
Will Svitek
Leon Washington

or traded for the following offensive player(s):

LeGarrette Blount

How about a little research of the contract values of offensive right tackles?

» Over the Cap- Top NFL Contracts: Right Tackle

Maybe you should review the first quarter performance by New England Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second preseason game. Maybe then you will understand the meaning of the word "elite" as in the phrase "elite performance".

Re: Re: Why did this team sign Tebow?

Yes, teams like Oakland, Washington and Miami might have signed Wallace or Bowe in our situation. The effect on the 2014 cap would have been ignored.

Anyone who thinks that patriots aren't about winning need to look at the number of wins each year since Kraft bought the team, and especially in the Belichick-Brady era.

MG hit the nail on head right here, this franchise is about sustaining a winning team year in and year out. You cannot do that by paying for big names entering their 2nd contract, you have to build through the draft and developing low cost players.

How many of those big name players actually pan out for the teams that sign them?

Re: Re: Why did this team sign Tebow?

I agree with much of what you said, but he's rebuilding pretty much the entire receiving corps, not just the X wide receiver.

That said, "always win" mentality isn't the same as "win now" mode that SB1 keeps talking about. A "win now" mode mortgages the team's future in order to try and "win now". It forgoes things like player development or even worrying about salary cap ramifications in the long term.

I agree he is rebuilding the entire unit but he has protected himself in each move by having an A, B or C option

X WR
Dobson - A
Jenkins - B
Harrison - C

Y WR
Boyce - A
Jones - B
Thompkins - C

Z WR
Amendola - A
Edelman - B
Moe/Hawkins - C

Sometimes a player designed to be option C will rise to the top which is the case with Thompkins this year.

And Amendola was brought in to REPLACE Wes Welker who was #3 in the NFL last year in total catches, # 8 in total yards. Some/many would argue that the Pats actually took a step back in that transaction. I think Amendola could be better than Welker and it's a youth movement, but letting Welker go and signing Amendola is hardly a "win now" type of move.

Bringing in Will Svitek, Leon Washington and LaGarrette Blount is evidence to you of "Win NOW" mode ? Really ? Are you serious ?

And Edelman and Hoomanawanui. That's a win-now mode for Jacksonville.

If you're going to argue for win-now evidence, the two trade ups in last years draft and the trades for Talib, Haynesworth and Ocho are better arguments, despite the failures of the last two.

It's called roster depth and better than relying upon a slew of undrafted free agents directly from the collegiate ranks to fill those roles.

Amendola was the only player listed I would really consider to be an upper echelon signing and he was had for a decent price with Iimited guaranteed money. We resigned Vollmer to a what I'd view as a team friendly deal. The rest of the players listed were all value signing that may or may not pan out.

Win now would be more a long the lines of what the Dolphins did this off season over paying for players who we're considered great on their rookie contracts with their previous teams but will likely become underperformers what they're now being paid.

Meanwhile the New England Patriots have already cut the following wide receivers:

Donald Jones
Michael Jenkins
Lavelle Hawkins

In addition, the Pittsburgh Steelers matched the restricted free agent tender offer by the New England Patriots for wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders.

Yet you also forget the financial impediment that currently exists today in the NFL called the SALARY CAP!

Re: Re: Why did this team sign Tebow?

How many teams in the NFL incur a salary cap hit of $1.583 million on a #3 tight end and salary cap hit of $1.323 million on a #4 tight end?

» Over the Cap- New England Patriots 2013 Salary Cap and Contracts

When we signed these TE's the offense was centered around Gronk and Hernandez which is different than most teams, so you cannot say the third or fourth TE here should align with another teams. We value that position more, other teams pay that for a third or fourth RB, or WR it really depends on the approach of the team.

Re: Re: Why did this team sign Tebow?

Welcome to my ignore list, ass. I'm leaving this forum until the tebowites are all banned.

Aren't you a Tebow fan? Or is the GQ picture a joke? :what:

With regard to the Miami Dolphins, that's more like reshuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic.

I'm confused by what you're trying to say? We always try and win; but that is different than a win now approach, a win now approach is what the Florida Marlins do every 4-5 years where they mortgage their future spend big hoping for 1 championship season and then have a firesale because their approach is not sustainable over an extended period of time.

The New England Patriots organization currently do not place as high of value on wide receivers than tight ends. Thus, Tebowites (not you) should not dictate to PatsFans how salary cap dollars should be allocated and to what positions.

Agreed; I'm sure it will end similar to the Titanic as well

Nor would the New England Patriots tender Pittsburgh Steeler restricted free agent wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders.

I think what some may be missing is yes we could of signed a Bowe or a Wallace but we'd of done so at the expense of a McCourty, Solder, etc. who will require a higher salary in the next season or two, so realistically we got the best WR we could afford without decimating other positions in the long run.

The Bengals could of signed just about every big name on the market during the off season but if they did they'd have to let Atkins, Green and the rest of their big names quickly approaching free agency walk, the point you made about the cap was a great one in the sense that this is not MLB you cannot buy championships in the NFL.
