Completely true for any system that has a desire to be successful. Too much motioning, two TE sets, and empty sets to get away with having a true SS and FS. You're idea that Tavon should never be the deepest safety on the field would mean that he should never see the field.

I'm fairly sure the Patriots play L/R safeties, not FS/SS, though I'm not exactly sure what that means in practical terms/responsibilities.

I think the game has gravitated so much to specialized matchups in nickel situations that your slot CB and coverage S/LB role are as important as base starters. In that scenario it would be a great thing if Tavon could fill the coverage LB/S position, even if it was just on 3rd downs. From there he's unlikely to ever be in deep coverage, but is still an important piece.

Whether he can ever grow to be effective in the role remains to be seen, but the idea that he has to be an every down safety capable of doing everything in order to be valuable is a bit harsh.

Nope, TP43 is a "strong safety" by name only. His role has evolved greatly since he was first drafted. Kind of like how there is no such thing as a "rush lb". Sure you may have players who are better suited to do one thing better than the other but teams exploit these guys quickly. Every single "SS" in the NFl is capable and is forced to play "FS" for a good percentage of the time that he's on the field.

All with out having to field any ST-only secondary scrub players. That has been several years in coming.

Aside from the fact, of course, that ST is, as BB says, the third phase of the game. . . .
