Stephen Gostkowski Thoughts?

Some of Gostkowski's performances last season started the alarm bells ringing in my head. The least I expected, was to see the introduction of some healthy competition to shake him up a bit. Unfortunately this has not happened and his kicking the other night could be a byproduct of that.

1. Economics - I believe not much can be gained capwise from cutting him/replacing him this season.

Frees up about $2 million if he is cut.

Out of all the guys on the team he would free up the 3rd most money behind Wilfork and Mankins for this years cap.

Wilfork would free up close to $6 million and Mankins would free up $5 million.

And then you have to sign a kicker. Who would you trust that is cheap enough to offset the cap saving. Then again it seems that some people here think we can win without a kicker so......

Also while I think Ghost is overpaid there are other things kickers do. He has been great about getting his hands dirty, diving in piles, and running down guys. That is worth something to BB.

His percentage is 11th best all time, over Phil Dawson and Viatieri and that includes a year coming back from a major injury.

I say we roll the dice and replace him with whatever crap floats by on the waiver wire, because I'm bored.

The numbers be damned, he now gives me a measure of anxiety and for years I trusted him without reservation.

There are no other options, and he hasn't killed us yet........not concerned

This thread doesn't have much of a point unless somebody can propose an alternative.

Quality post........

Yeah, I definitely agree with those who say that it's obvious that we need to keep him for multiple reasons, but I can honestly agree with this thought too.

If/when the game is on the line, I'll be holding my breath a little more than I did in the past.

you have to have a good reliable kicker these days in the NFL, given that there are so many close games. it's simply not acceptable missing 2 makeable field goals in good conditions. seriously, the dude cost us the Arizona game last year even with that nonsense holding call on Gronk.

with that said someone mentioned above that allen may be the holder on some of the misses from friday's game. belichick said that allen is improving in that area, so we'll see.

Wow. And you bring up ANOTHER DOME KICKER.

FG percentages are the most important thing. You play to WIN the game.

If you are going to base your point on length of attempt and then completely ignore 72 degree zero mph wind dome versus open end Northeast stadium, then you, sir, are doing the very definition of "cherry picking".

OF COURSE a HC will choose to attempt more 50+ yard kicks in a dome than outdoors in the northeast - - this should not be a revelation.

Obviously, you are trying to make a Strato-Matic Football argument based completely on PARTS of statistics without actually understanding the sport is played by humanoids on a planet called earth that has weather for outdoor games.

There's plenty of outdoor kickers that attempt more than 2 50 yard fieldgoals. BB doesn't trust him from that distance. (SB that shall not be named)

Funny you bring up "Adam Automatic".

I'm more than happy that they chose to let AV go when they did and brought Ghost in at that time.

Ghost has been far better over the past 7 seasons (84.2% vs 83.8% - - anyone want to compare the relative conditions in the fall/winter of Gillette Stadium versus the RCA Dome?). Last year "Adam Automatic" was 78.8%.

People should think of that (comparing players at the SAME time during different parts of their career) when they look at the Amendola/Welker situation also. Will Amendola be as good as the 2007-2012 Welker? No. Will he be as good as the 2013-2018 Welker? I like his chances.
I'll still take Adam over any human being to make a kick with the game on the line. Gost had a rough year but hopefully he rebounds this season. Hopefully his confidence isn't shattered.

In 2001? Sure.

It's a free country. You take the 78.8% dome kicker today.

To each his own.

? Who would take a 40 year old kicker over a 28 year old kicker when the 28 year old kicker has a better FG% all time???????

Isn't Gost one of the highest paid kickers right now? If he is, he needs to perform better to justify his salary

I'd still take him today over Gost. Gost has been a bit shaky lately and Adam always seems to make the big kick. I believe he made a 50+ yd game winner and another fairly long one last season.

Not confident right now..hopefully he hits a few in the next few "practices"
