Kraft admitted that he looked into investing with Bernie Madoff. Does that mean we cannot bash idiots who invested so much without doing homework like Kraft did. Kraft looks at a lot deals he never even get close making an offer. The Times got six bids and not one of them was by Kraft. Even the article unless I missed it, only says Henry didn't want the Pats to buy the Globe.

People were *****ing about the PR aspect, etc..., not some Madoff angle, so why are you posting that sort of an irrelevancy?

Henry and Lucchino can try to use the Globe all they want to minimize Patriots coverage and increase Red Sox coverage.

Unless you are a 65 year old who doesn't go on the computer or have a smartphone and only reads the Globe then it will have absolutely no effect.

Hell the Globe could stop covering the Patriots altogether and it would have no effect on the Patriots in this day and age.

Patriots are the #6 most valuable sports franchise in the world, they didn't get there because of the Globe and they won't drop from that spot because of the Globe.

Only reason someone who has access to the internet would read the Globe is for writers opinions. Besides now with Bedard gone from the Globe there is literally no Patriots beat writer there I care to read.

Oh and by the way the city of Boston also screwed us fans out of any opportunity to get a new Fenway Park. Sox ownership had every intention/desire to build a new ballpark in the city and had/has the right guy in place to do it in Larry Lucchino. Can you imagine a Camden Yards in Boston?? Oh my god it would be baseball heaven. Sadly we can only dream....Sox ownership found out pretty quickly that the pols were not going to play ball vis-à-vis city land, infrastructure, etc. Hence the refurbish of 100 yr old Fenway.
From where I sit the Patriots have pretty much gotten a free media ride in this town for well over a decade. Borgie the Plagiarist will take his shots but overall this organization has been treated like sports royalty around here by the media.

1) I see - - - it was the RED SOX who got run out of Southie and couldn't build a stadium ANYWHERE ELSE within city limits?

2) It was the PATRIOTS whom Boston allowed to close off 2 PUBLIC streets on game days to turn into PRIVATE merchandise malls?

3) And it is the Boston Globe via Shaughnessy, Ryan and (most egregious, Sports Editor Ol' Time Joe Sullivan) who have annually written "Boston is a FOOTBALL town now, then and forever"?

The stuff coming out of the Globe (Shaughnessy last week "columnizing" that Kraft/BB/Brady are not the ones responsible for the Patriots success - - that it was actually the 4 -year carpetbagger who brought the franchise to where it is today) is not oral flatulence???? The sports editor and columnists at the Globe have hated Bob Kraft for 20 years - - and it is a very deeply held antipathy.

That being said, I actually like John Henry and appreciate what he has done for the Red Sox. Anyone who doesn't, really can't remember the bad old days of Harrington/Leroux-Sullivan/Yawkey with the anachronistic-mean customer experience at Fenway replete with nasty-politically connected pension double dipping ushers and a "You don't like here? Then get the hell out" attitude.

Today's experience at Fenway is enjoyable, clean and customer oriented. What Janet Marie Smith did for Fenway is nothing short of a miracle.

Boston has finally been dragged (kicking and screaming) into the 21st century. Look around the city - - what used to be a backwater - 20 years behind every trend, is now cutting edge in every way. In fact, today, if Kraft were to propose something similar to what he did 17 years ago, there would be fewer Billy Bulgers and Tommy Finnerans in power to shut the door.

Ever read this guys posts on the political forum? There is No Way he'd voluntarily want his tax money spent on infrastructure for a stadium, but he's OK with spending ours. Thats different.

Before we start complaining about this, shouldn't we at least do some research? How much will this influence how the average Patriots fan gets his/her information?

What are the page hits to nontraditional sites for Patriots info? (ie ESPN Boston, WEEI, Patriots.com, etc)

How do those compare to the major local newspaper site hits for Patriots specific content? How many of those site hits are redundant due to paper subscribers and/or people who buy at the newstand?

How does social media effect how people get information?

Personally, I check ESPN Boston, Twitter, and this site. I haven't checked a Herald blog or article since January 2008.

I do not plan on checking the Globe unless Ben Volin's work becomes less Florida-centric (find me a piece that does not mention the Dolphins or one of the major Florida universities). I ignore SMY for the most part, her writing does little to nothing for me and the other writers at the Globe, both opinion writers and reporters, who draw football duty are too simplistic. Some how, I stay afloat in Patriots news without relying on either of the two local papers.


I enjoy baseball, not as much as a used to, but I'll take in a few games a year and watch on tv a bit during the summer. The game is too slow, it is too long, it is tainted. In short, the sport has a lot of problems and until all of those get worked out, it will continue to have declining ratings. Conversely, as the desire for football information grows, any major news agency would be remiss if it did not do all it can to get that information out there.

Also, if you check a lot of the Globe sports writers' twitter accounts this weekend, they have also expressed trepidation about how this sale will effect their ability to report with dignity on all sports. Peter Abraham, a very good baseball writer, has been at the forefront of this. Ben Volin, in a backhanded and snarky way, has said that he is suddenly a fan of baseball and soccer. They see the writing on the wall and Henry will have to have a hands-off approach as every word in the sports page will be looked at with scrutiny from day 1. I think he is a smart enough businessman to know this.

Henry has a history of buying media vehicles and using it for PR for the Red Sox and using deals with other media vehicles to control the exposure of the team beyond the deal. We have no such history to draw on for Kraft. His intentions may have been the same, but we don't know that.

Exactly. As a local businessman, Kraft would be a fool NOT to take the meeting and look into buying the Globe. Even if he suspected going in that it was a bad investment.

Because he did due dilligence by looking into and decided it was a crappy investment....we can't call out Henry as the turd he is?

I spend a fair amount of time traveling and meet fans from all over, but predominantly from the midWest. I spend a lot of time defending the Patriots and us, their fans, against charges that we're elite snobs who turn our noses up at other teams and their fans. As someone who is often derided, with others, here as a homer (which I proudly am), reading many of the posts here give me a little insight into why those from elsewhere view us as they do. I don't care for hockey, but I enjoy it when the Bruins do well because I'm provincial. I don't think any positive purpose is served when NE fans deride our local teams because, believe me, there are millions of others from elsewhere who are only too happy to do that for us. For me, it's Pats first, Red Sox and Celtics tied for second and Bruins a distant last. But, I don't feel the need to bash any of them at the expense of the others.

All anyone has to do is look at the economics of this $70 million purchase.

It is obvious, it has nothing to do with journalism or the newspaper business.

Just Googlemap "135 Morrissey Boulevard". The building/land alone is worth $50 million. Throw in the equipment inside, the trucks, etc. and you have a cash deal for property.

The New York Times bought the Boston Globe for $1.1 billion 10 years ago.

What this economically screams is that the "newspaper" is worthless.

Throw in the fact that the Times will be keeping all pension obligations Henry won't have any. This is very rare in any industry outside of newspapers these days.

shmessy, that was not my intention at all. Not for a second do I think that the limited number of posters in his thread (including me) are a representative sample of Patriots fans. And you can make a solid argument about Bob Kraft and the Globe, but I would prefer their treatment, as shabby as it's been at times, to the grossest abomination and lie ever perpetrated upon Kraft and the Patriots - namely, Tomase's hatchet job prior to the SB, followed by their pathetic, useless front page apology when it was determined Tomase lied. Notice, I didn't say he was mistaken. He lied and got caught in that lie, and continues to work there today as if it all never happened. Then, Ron Borges is caught plagiarizing by the Globe and gets fired. And what organization happily hires him? The local rag known as the Herald.
