Patriots Training Camp Day 7 (be advised)

Thompkins

He has had the most highlight reel plays in this TC IMHO

Why do I seem to notice conflicting tweets ? Some say WR's had drops, "gotta step it up". Some says good/great catches . Then they say communication issues. I assume its all of these because its practice and expected to have ups and downs but no one seems to mention all of them together.

Careful, now. Around here, pointing out that there are differing/conflicting tweets can get you in trouble.

It appears that BB doesn't do well when drafting for luxury, but when it turns into necessity -- oh-ho-ho when it turns to necessity -- he hits like a ************.

2010 - TE (Gronk and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named)
2011 - RB (Vereen and Ridley)
2012 - Front 7 (Jones and Hightower)
2013 - WR? Yet to be seen but looking 10x more positive than any WR we drafted in over a decade.

Not sure Hightower could be considered a necessity at the time of drafting him, but fair enough on your overall point. This year will probably make or break the thesis.

I saw that too. Hopefully, that means that Harmon is doing well enough to knock Adrian Wilson out of the starting role so that he can be a role player and concentrate on TE's and RB's as a nickel LB.

The last sentence would make more sense to me if they weren't giving Harmon first team reps. This team has never been afraid of starting rookies if they are out performing the vets either.

Logic tells me it sounds like he's regressing. Hope I'm wrong because of the draft capital spent on him, but that's what it sounds like.

Like Logic would really ever talk to you.

I thought it would be a good time to do an early the stock report of the players. My job as a pilot generally keeps me out of the New England area the majority of July and August so unfortunately I have not had the opportunity to attend a training camp session. I do appreciate my fellow members in here providing spectacular feedback and I'm using that and the media reports to make a determination. (Please note; any player not listed would be considered even)

It was crowed and hot at practice today. A lot less skelly and a lot more team than yesterday. I'm not going to get too deep into detail so I'll just throw some tidbits out there.

Punt returns was the special team focus of the day. They played a lot of music during punt work including the Clash's Magnificent Seven, Springsteen's Jungle Land, and even a little Elvis Costello. They worked hard against shifting punt block schemes and worked tight punts from the EZ.

The Offense unveiled more Tebow run game today. A mid-line option, a QB ISO, and a QB Draw were added to the package. A lot more Pistol today with Edelman and I think Blount taking turns at the tailback spot. Amendola got more reps as the pitch back on triple option. They ran the ball from the "Pistol Diamond" formation made popular by Oregon today as well. Tebow is going to be seeing Collins in his sleep. It seems like everytime he keeps the ball Collins appears out of nowhere to meet him at the LOS. I know who is going to be a big part of the defensive game plan the next time the Pats play certain NFC West teams.

One of the things I find interesting with this whole Pistol deal is that Tebow works with the third team when he's practicing the pass game but with the first team when he's running Pistol. That means something my friends.

The defense stayed away from press man today except for when they were inside their own ten yard line. The mostly played pattern read zones and off man. McCourty saw most of his work today as a right CB. There were some defensive wrinkles today with Harmon & Gregory playing Safety in a heavy Dime with McCourty and Talib at the corners and A. Wilson and Arrington at the slots. There were some front changes in the sub packages too with some shifts. Jamie Collins played some Defensive End today in sub-packages even dropping into coverage to Rob on one rep.

More scramble drill today, this time off a roll away escape. They worked on a naked boot off of Outside Zone, Over Routes, Digs, OZ run game and drop-back Screens. The O had a heavy run period against a look unit.

Thomkins earned some heavy praise today for improving some aspect of his route running.

As always, one on ones & two on twos receiver vs. CB was a hit. Highlights include Slater catching a bomb over McCourty for a TD, Edelman beating Cole & Dobson beating Talib. The two on two goal line work against soft man is simply unfair to the defense.

Jones put Mankins on his ass during OL/DL one on ones.

They ran another concept designed to slow down a defense that I really liked. We saw the waggle type roll out yesterday and a naked boot today then late in practice then ran a fake crack Toss with Tompkins faking the crack and crossing the field against the grain to match up with the rolling QB. It was a nice looking mis-direction concept.

Mallet executed a flea flicker with Ridley that Dobson exploited to get wide open behind the defense. Mallett underthrew it but Dobson still managed a completion. Should have been a TD though.

Ballard limps everywhere but he must have read some of his bad reviews because he viciously stiff armed Hightower to break a tackle today.

Talib had the play of the day covering Boyce across the field on a low crosser to tip the ball away from him, snag it out of the air and take it for six.

Pepper got animated during a red zone skelly when Brady scrambled around excessively until finally finding Dobson for a TD. Pep was screaming that Brady "would have been on the ground!!!!!!!".

Collins once again caused the only fumble during a ball security drill.

Brady was a little exasperated after his final throw went incomplete on the goal-line. He signaled to a smoke route to a singled up Dobson and went back-shoulder right past Dob's helmet because he was a hair late making his break.

The offense tried to run it in from the 2 on three straight plays without getting in. Mayo finished the day with a big hit that stopped Ridley on the 1 yard line while also sending Steven's helmet flying.

It means they want the 1st team defense to practice against the pistol formation and a running QB.

As much as I believe a Talib/McCourty CB tandem would be a top 5 in the NFL I doesn't seem to make much sense to me given how much of a difference maker McCourty is when he is at safety. Gregory is a solid depth player but I do not want him in the starting unit, Wilson appears to have found his way back into the dog house (rather quickly), and Harmon is a bit of an unknown at least to me.

Well, Tweets are 140 characters. Not going to get detailed analysis out of them. Also, if are watching live tweets, they are not by the media who aren't allowed to tweet during practice (although some smaller websites who don't get press access do). And the people who do tweet during practice are probably tweeting at the moment.

I don't hold much stock in training camp reports anyway. Maybe if they assessment is near unanimous, but even then not much. But if you are going to get anything remotely close to an accurate story of what happened, read the full training camp day wrap up on the given sites and don't put too much stock in the Tweets.

Tavon Wilson's stock is down, but Adrian's might be rising (based on everyone else sucking at this position except McCourty). I think it will be Adrian-McCourty at Safety in a few weeks.

Stock Down
Allen, Ryan

Please feel free to offer any feedback, and let me know if you feel my assessment of a player is inaccurate.

Curious to know where you get the idea that Allen's stock is down. impression I'm getting is that he's out-punting Mesko.

that's not an impression, that's a fact...Ryan is getting noticeably higher, longer kicks with better hang time. Tunes spotted this as I was watching other areas and told me to watch...I thought Allen was Mesko the way the kicks outclassed the other guy. It was Allen. Perhaps the negative is coming from kicks that are supposed to pin the offense inside the ten..or directional kicks. On leg strength though, I don't think there's any question Allen has the stronger leg.

Wilson appears to have found his way back into the dog house (rather quickly).

Which is based on one report from Nick Underhill who doesn't really explain in great detail other than noting at one point in practice he saw McCourty and A.Wilson on the sideline and Harmon and Gregory getting 1st team reps. While T.Wilson was going against backups.

Harmon is a 3rd round draft choice you have to give him some 1st team reps to see what you have. Which means it comes at the expense of someone.

There were also multiple reports T.Wilson getting first team reps that day.

I'm just wondering how Underhill makes that assumption. Seems like he just needed a 3rd player for the article.

Also the doghouse thing is overblown because of this article. It's because T.Wilson is listed under the heading "In the doghouse". Is Mallet or Jenkins in Belichick's doghouse as well because both were listed under it.

Underhill and his sloppy journalism had to sensationalize it with the headings of "Flying high" and "In the doghouse", instead of just leaving it simple and using "Up" and "Down".

When it comes to safety, look to McCourty as the only 'sure thing'. Look for A. Wilson and Gregory to split the so-called starting minutes at the other spot, depending upon opponent and strategy. Also, look for A. Wilson to be out as essentially an extra LB to defend TEs while Gregory and McCourty fill the traditional roles in the big nickel. From what's been published, look for T. Wilson to start the season off by picking up the scraps, and for Harmon to be brought along slowly. Ebner looks like a man who'll be in need of a job.

Just my quick take, at the moment, based upon reports. Things (and everyone's take on them) could change by tomorrow.

Stock Down
Armstead, Armond
Harrison, Mark
Ridley, Stevan

I think it is a little harsh to say Armstead and Harrison's stock is down. I know whole "from the tub" saying but Armstead and Harrison are both coming back from surgeries. If their stock is down so is Gronk's.

Also Ridley's stock being down is news to me. I know he fumbled a couple of times going up against the defense (which I thought one of them was an exchange from Mallet, maybe i'm wrong) in one of the first practices. But haven't heard anything since.

Tavon Wilson is still so much better down near the box. Struggles when he has to turn and run/cover deep. I just don't see it yet.

I like the ability for DMcC to be able to play both S and CB depending upon the situation at hand, but like the rest of us--prefer him at safety.

He does have the capacity to play both though, as noted in the most recent SB loss where his assignment changed based on subpackages.

It'd have been a lot nicer to have drafted another safety higher this year like many of us wanted to do, but there's certainly hope for both Harmon and T.Wilson still even if that's looking at it too optimistically.

Obviously our best hope is for Dennard and Dowling to play as much as possible which would allow McCourty to stay at safety.

For me it's less about McCourty and more about the other players, meaning the only reason I don't want McCourty at CB is because I don't like what the safety position would look like. If we had Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor at safety I'd be saying we'd be morons not to pair Talib and McCourty as the starters.
