It was crowed and hot at practice today. A lot less skelly and a lot more team than yesterday. I'm not going to get too deep into detail so I'll just throw some tidbits out there.
Punt returns was the special team focus of the day. They played a lot of music during punt work including the Clash's Magnificent Seven, Springsteen's Jungle Land, and even a little Elvis Costello. They worked hard against shifting punt block schemes and worked tight punts from the EZ.
The Offense unveiled more Tebow run game today. A mid-line option, a QB ISO, and a QB Draw were added to the package. A lot more Pistol today with Edelman and I think Blount taking turns at the tailback spot. Amendola got more reps as the pitch back on triple option. They ran the ball from the "Pistol Diamond" formation made popular by Oregon today as well. Tebow is going to be seeing Collins in his sleep. It seems like everytime he keeps the ball Collins appears out of nowhere to meet him at the LOS. I know who is going to be a big part of the defensive game plan the next time the Pats play certain NFC West teams.
One of the things I find interesting with this whole Pistol deal is that Tebow works with the third team when he's practicing the pass game but with the first team when he's running Pistol. That means something my friends.
The defense stayed away from press man today except for when they were inside their own ten yard line. The mostly played pattern read zones and off man. McCourty saw most of his work today as a right CB. There were some defensive wrinkles today with Harmon & Gregory playing Safety in a heavy Dime with McCourty and Talib at the corners and A. Wilson and Arrington at the slots. There were some front changes in the sub packages too with some shifts. Jamie Collins played some Defensive End today in sub-packages even dropping into coverage to Rob on one rep.
More scramble drill today, this time off a roll away escape. They worked on a naked boot off of Outside Zone, Over Routes, Digs, OZ run game and drop-back Screens. The O had a heavy run period against a look unit.
Thomkins earned some heavy praise today for improving some aspect of his route running.
As always, one on ones & two on twos receiver vs. CB was a hit. Highlights include Slater catching a bomb over McCourty for a TD, Edelman beating Cole & Dobson beating Talib. The two on two goal line work against soft man is simply unfair to the defense.
Jones put Mankins on his ass during OL/DL one on ones.
They ran another concept designed to slow down a defense that I really liked. We saw the waggle type roll out yesterday and a naked boot today then late in practice then ran a fake crack Toss with Tompkins faking the crack and crossing the field against the grain to match up with the rolling QB. It was a nice looking mis-direction concept.
Mallet executed a flea flicker with Ridley that Dobson exploited to get wide open behind the defense. Mallett underthrew it but Dobson still managed a completion. Should have been a TD though.
Ballard limps everywhere but he must have read some of his bad reviews because he viciously stiff armed Hightower to break a tackle today.
Talib had the play of the day covering Boyce across the field on a low crosser to tip the ball away from him, snag it out of the air and take it for six.
Pepper got animated during a red zone skelly when Brady scrambled around excessively until finally finding Dobson for a TD. Pep was screaming that Brady "would have been on the ground!!!!!!!".
Collins once again caused the only fumble during a ball security drill.
Brady was a little exasperated after his final throw went incomplete on the goal-line. He signaled to a smoke route to a singled up Dobson and went back-shoulder right past Dob's helmet because he was a hair late making his break.
The offense tried to run it in from the 2 on three straight plays without getting in. Mayo finished the day with a big hit that stopped Ridley on the 1 yard line while also sending Steven's helmet flying.
