I've read a number of Sudfeld threads and his potential impact. I agree he appears to have a lot of potential. That said I don't see him in the TE-Flat role that Hernandez had so much success with.

A player I do think has similar qualities to Hernandez (hopefully only on the field) is Brandon Ford. I've attached a link to his combine stats to this post.

I look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts.

No room apparently, they already have Daniel Fells and Michael Hoomanawanui. I don't know why any UDFA TE would sign here.

after the contract the Pats gave Hernandez I'd think every UDFA TE in the universe would want to sign here...easy money AND a four year window???...even I'm thinking about a few thousand bucks worth of liposuction and ankle transplants....

Here's a nice little write up by Danny Kelly.

"Brandon Ford is a guy that Jared Stanger has pointed out to me, and possesses the measurables in arm length and hand size that this front office really likes -- and as Stanger pointed out earlier, "listed at 6'3"/235, if he has a decent 40, he could be that more prototypical Joker player. Clemson would sometimes use Ford out of the backfield like the H-back [as well]. He certainly has great hands."

It was sarcasm carrying over from another thread regarding what a tall order it would take to replace the apparently irreplaceable Daniel Fells. Good luck with the lipo and ankle transplants, though.

Yeah I saw that debate. I'm interested to know what he sees in Fells.

I'd personally be fine if they kept;

Gronkowski
Ballard
Sudfeld
Ford

Send Hoomanawanui and Fells packing. I don't think we will spend nearly as much time in the 2 TE sets this season, so rather give the two young guys a shot and see what they can do. I think we've had an opportunity to asses the incumbents, they're solid JAG's at best IMO.

Yeah, all the other tight ends on the roster are more of the traditional inline, blocking type of TE. Ford has much more of an opportunity than he did when he was signed; of all the tight ends on the roster the converted wide reciver has the closest skill set to Hernandez. He is one of several intriguing, under the radar types in this training camp.

Some more on the guy who has the same name as an automobile dealership not far from where I live:

Brandon Ford, TE, Clemson (6’4? – 245)
Ford caught 40 balls for 480 yards in Clemson’s dynamic offense, scoring eight touchdowns. Ford can play both tight end and H-back, and has shown a good blend of athleticism. He ran a 4.7 forty and has enough savvy running routes to be an NFL player down the road.

Meanwhile a B/R writer from Detroit has no faith in any of the Pats tight ends, and thinks New England's best solution is to trade for Brandon Pettigrew:

Why Brandon Pettigrew Is the Lions' Best Trade Option with the Patriots | Bleacher Report

Many fans simply believe that the genius of Bill Belichick and the supreme talent of Brady will rescue the Patriots from this predicament. Others might think Jake Ballard, Daniel Fells and rookie Brandon Ford can pick up the slack.

If you believe that I've got some swampland I'd like to sell you.

The Patriots are clearly in trouble on the offensive side of the ball and the Lions actually have the cure for what ails them—spare tight ends.

First he makes a case for Pettigrew:

He is a versatile tight end who is a proficient blocker and can catch 70-80 balls a year (although he caught only 59 in 2012).

And then follows it up with something that he picked up on, but apparently thinks BB would not notice:

He's also responsible for his share of fumbles, drops and knucklehead plays each and every year and he's proven to be ineffective in the red zone

And a bit over optimistically hopes that:

It all depends on how desperate the Patriots are. More than likely the Lions could expect a second-round pick or a package of lower picks in exchange for Pettigrew.

Outstanding post!!

Thank you; this is some really great info I hadn't seen before. I appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share it.

Is this because pro-bowl quality wide receivers?

Seriously, NONE of our top 5 receivers from 2012 will be there for Game One. Gronk is the only returnee. I see no reason to move from the 2 TE set, and every reason to run it as much as last year.

The key question for me is which wide receivers will be able to learn the no huddle early in the season.

Seriously,

No it's because one of our star TE's just had back surgery, and the other he just got arrested for murder. Did we use a lot of 2 TE sets prior to the emergence of Gronkowski and Hernandez?

I'm not sure why you're so confrontational in many of your posts. You see to be an intelligent football guy but some of you posts appear to be written simply for the sake of disagreeing.

I just joined this forum 5 days ago I'm not looking to be part of confrontations so I'd appreciate it if you would provide me with the same level of respect that I give you when commenting on your posts. If you go back and review I've been polite as well as fair in all of them and even complimented in one or two of them.

Please note that I was responding to your original post that said nothing after "seriously".

I appreciate you going back to it and adding to it in a non confrontational manor. I sincerely apologize if I jumped the gun with my previous response. I hope that moving forward we can communicate and build a forum friendship

No problem.

As you see, I posted an incomplete post, hence the word "seriously, ".

Many consider me stubborn, but not usually confrontational. I reserve that for post such as the one where I called someone out as a bigot and a troll.

In any case, I enjoy your posts and your discussions. I trust that there will be many more.

I lean towards your thinking too, mg. I don't personally see nearly as much straying from the 2 TE sets that some feel will be inevitable; especially with the aspect of a continued committment to the running game along with the ability to keep the same personnel on the field in the hurry up.

That said, we may indeed see "less" of the 2 TE sets than we've seen in the past couple of yrs, but one must also remember that Gronk/AH were only together in 5/18 games last season, yet Belichick stayed committed to that scheme pretty solidly.

He may go to 3 WR sets in obvious passing situations or in situations where we gameplan for an opponent's specific weakness at times, but I don't think he's going to throw it out the window as much as some may believe.

No it's because one of our star TE's just had back surgery, and the other he just got arrested for murder. Did we use a lot of 2 TE sets prior to the emergence of Gronkowski and Hernandez?

Only time will tell as to the decisions that BB will have to make, although one would assume that he'll certainly try to keep the 2 TE's as much as possible--depending on how things look in training camp and preseason.

I gave my personal opinion on the matter in the response above, but there is certainly a reasonable argument for a lot of different formations/schemes due to the recent circumstances with AH. I believe that Gronk will end up being fine and the worst case scenario we're looking at is the possibility of missing a couple/few games in the beginning.

You may be right about more 3 WR sets--at least in passing situations, so in theory we both could be correct on some level. I'd expect there to be a bit of an adjustment period in the earlier months of August (obviously), and even possibly through September. They'll likely try different things with what they have, so only time will tell how it all shakes out.

For what it's worth--I've been waiting for someone to start a Brandon Ford thread, so thanks for that. He certainly seems to be more of the "move" or "joker" TE in the mold of what we're losing with Hernandez, so if he shows anything of significance he should certainly receive some additional looks and attention.

Some of the things that may prevent him from making it are:

--Fells' return to health from his injury last year. It's hard to project who the "real" Daniel Fells is regarding his time in NE, but the rumor is that he was pretty hurt at some points last season. That will be something to keep an eye on.

--Whether or not Ford (or Sudfeld, for that matter) is able to pick up the playbook/scheme and the finer nuances of this offensive system. That will go a long way in determining a year on the PS vs. a potential spot.

--Obviously, Ford's attention to detail and ability to prove that he's a hard worker both in practice and film study.

--The health and decisions of # of TEs that Belichick will keep, along with any idea or hint of choosing to lean more towards a 3 WR set in the majority of the plays.

I generally don't follow UDFA's unless they have an extraordinary camp.

At this point, Ford is behind Gronk, Fells, Ballard, Hooman and Sudfield. So, I would think that he is competing for a Practice Squad roster spot

This aside what are your thoughts on Brandon Ford?

I always expect veterans (especially veterans who have played here before) to have the inside track on roster spots and early playing time. Rookies, whether they be first rounders or UDFA, have to really outplay them in camp to take their spots, it's just the usual order of things.

That said, the injury to Gronk and the Hernandez situation has potentially bought the rookies more time to prove themselves. Where before they would have had to show something spectacular early to beat out the vets for the 3rd TE (MAYBE 4th) spot, now they may be afforded a few extra weeks opportunity while Gronk gets healthy.

I expect Hernandez's role in the offense to be at least partially filled by players capable of succeeding in doing the things he did well, whether they have "TE" next to their name or not. Bigger slot receiver, H-back, split wide, in the backfield, run-after-catch threat, "designated match-up nightmare" if you will.

My first choice, if healthy, to assume those responsibilities would be some combo or Vereen and Edelman.
