I'm guess I'm nuts rooting for this guy .

How do you root for a guy who is blessed with an opportunity and manages to squander it due to his own immaturity/irresponsibility?

Uhhhh.... no. I'd give Rohann Davey and second chance before this no good, waste of space.

Hell yeah.

I'd give him a chance.

with the Jets.

if this was for a fantasy hotdog eating team, then yes, I would pick him up.

Yes, right after I tried out Ryan Leaf and Todd Marinovich.

Yes yes, he was absolutely terrible, had no motivation, and was a fat@$$.

It appears as though he is finally motivated and no longer a fat@$$. Look at the 2007-2008 Raiders rosters, it was 2013 Jet bad.

A motivated Russell, the best arm talent ever, that would actually put time into learning and working, I'd be interested in a camp invite.

I'm guess I'm nuts rooting for this guy .

The guy is a total train wreck. Going on a diet doesn't change that.

If the Pats can bring in Chris Redman for a look, they could bring in Russell for a look as well. It doesn't hurt to evaluate someone based on what work he has been putting in on his own. Then I would give him a test and see if he is literate.

That is what I would be willing to do and see if he can be a NFL player again.

It would kind of be like when the Raiders got Plunkett from us for nothing.

There is no harm in taking a look and bringing him in for a week for an assessment.
The Raiders didn't get Plunkett from us for nothing. We traded Plunkett to SF for a plethora of picks that was the impetus to making that team a contender.
Plunkett failed in SF was out of work and the Raiders took a shot at his as a backup. Then they traded Stabler for Dan Pastorini, who last about a month, and Plunkett went in because he was all they had.

As far as Russell, why waste reps or time on a guy who lacks the attitude of a winner?

No.

But I wouldn't have given him a first chance either.

This is just getting sad now. The guy made a big mistake leaving school early without finishing his formal education and getting a degree. He decided to let it all ride on his strong arm and athletic talent that had gotten him that far, but that alone won't work in the pro's. Instead, he blew up like a blimp, got hood rich, left the league, went broke, and now has nothing to fall back on. I wish him the best of luck in his comeback effort, but I wouldn't want him.

Huh? He is not broke, he got 31.5mill and saved a lot of it.
How can you possibly question his decision to take 31 mill instead of getting a history degree so he could be making 40,000 a year now?

How do you root for a guy who is blessed with an opportunity and manages to squander it due to his own immaturity/irresponsibility?

Because his past immaturity/irresponsibility just shows that he is human and not perfect. I find it easy to root for guys that have been down in the dumps and trying for a comeback. It depends on the situation a bit, a younger guys past mistakes are easier to forgive.

I'm rooting for him, just not with this team.

Can he rush the passer?

We know he can't play QB, no matter how he performs in any contrived skills test.

So the answer is really....

I would be more than happy to give him another chance to play QB, provided it's with the JESTS, Bills, or Dolphins.

Especially the JESTS.

Sorry, I don't buy it. He had everything handed to him, essentially, and chose to squander it on drugs and partying. It's not that I root against him, but there are millions of people out there who actually do work hard that I'd support before I give a second thought about Russell.

Arena Football, maybe? If he is serious, he might go there and show that he has undergone an attitude transplant to accompany his weight loss.

Otherwise, maybe the Jets, who, with Wrecks and the Sanchize, are still one ring short of a full three ring circus.

He seems to have found motivation, which is huge, but does he have the football smarts to be an NFL QB? If he has the tools I'd give him a bare minimum deal.

Sure. Invite him to camp, league minimum offer. If he makes it, it means you may have found something. Granted, probably a 1% chance of that, but why not? If he still stinks, get rid of him, no harm, no foul.

I think the whole "being handed everything" thing was a big part of the problem, not just for Russel. These guys never get to really grow up just because they are handed everything. And then they are thrust in situations where they are expected to behave as adults, i.e. adversity, and they fail miserably. It's not exactly his fault(kinda is since his talent prompted it ) he was handed everything and being sheltered.

If he comes back more mature, humble and works hard, I can't help rooting for the guy.

I wonder if he might have to go to the CFL for a bit before the NFL teams will give him another shot.

Second chance? Why, did he get kicked off "The Biggest Loser" already?
