On Wednesday, Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reported that left tackle Will Campbell was wearing a brace on his left arm during the team’s 10th practice of the 2026 preseason.
The second-year tackle was limited on Thursday, which at this point of training camp isn’t necessarily concerning news. However, his absence did provide a revelation of where the team is currently when it comes to who the “next man up” is behind Campbell at left tackle.
Reports on Wednesday revealed that Marcus Bryant got the reps in Campbell’s absence, which was an interesting development. Bryant spent much of the 2025 season working at right tackle, with last year’s 7th-round pick spending the majority of his snaps on special teams during his rookie season.
Bryant had been trending upward as the season came to an end, with the team clearly feeling comfortable enough with their depth at tackle that they moved on from both Vederian Lowe and Thayer Munford this offseason.
Lowe stepped in and played well while Campbell was out with a knee injury last season, and his performance earned him both a raise and an opportunity for a fresh start with the 49ers. He’s reportedly off to a rough start this preseason as he’s battling a high-ankle sprain.
Meanwhile, 2026 Patriots Draft pick Caleb Lomu has continued rotating in behind Morgan Moses at right tackle, which appears to be where the team is planning for him to be moving forward.
Moses is signed through 2027, but Lomu’s development could potentially see the Patriots move on from him after this season. That would then see both Campbell and Lomu being the future anchors on New England’s offensive line heading into next year.
But for now, Bryant seems to have himself in a good place on the Patriots’ depth chart. Hopefully Campbell will be healthy for 2026, and Bryant’s contributions will again remain on special teams for his second straight year.
