Drake Maye on Christian Gonzalez Contract Standoff, His Own Patriots Future

As the contract negotiations with Christian Gonzalez continue, it’s a reminder that this offseason will also be a big one for New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye.

Maye is currently in the third year of his own rookie deal, which will likely see the club pick up his fifth-year option next offseason with the intent of getting a long-term deal done to keep him in New England.

The team took one of those steps with Gonzalez this offseason, with the Patriots picking up Gonzalez’s own fifth-year option. They’ve since been involved in trying to get a long-term deal done, with owner Robert Kraft going so far last week to say that they’ve offered a deal that would make him ‘the highest-paid player ever’ at cornerback.

“We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player, as a person,” said Kraft. “That’s why we’ve made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL. And coincidentally, it’s the highest contract in the Patriots franchise history.”

“So we’re glad we drafted him, and he’s developed here, and we hope he will be with us for a long time.”

While the two were spotted talking on the field last week, Gonzalez seemed a little uncomfortable with the owner speaking out. The veteran wouldn’t comment when reporters asked him about it last week, saying he had no intention of negotiating through the media.

But the fact that a deal has yet to get done quietly remains a key point as the regular season continues inching closer.

Gonzalez vs Maye: QB is the Priority

As important as keeping Gonzalez in the fold is, Maye is clearly going to have to be the team’s long-term priority.

Having already gone through Cam Newton and using a draft pick on Mac Jones, the Patriots quickly found out how difficult finding a potential long-term answer at quarterback can be. There won’t ever be another Tom Brady, but finding someone else to compete at a high level is something that every club hopes – and is generally difficult – to find.

So far, the team appears to have found one in Maye. He’s already exceeded expectations, having led his team to a Super Bowl while finishing as an MVP runner-up last year, and he’s only played two seasons in the NFL.

He’s obviously someone you build a franchise around. As valuable as Gonzalez is, he’s more of a luxury than an absolute necessity. Teams can be competitive and win games with a franchise QB. Gonzalez already knows first-hand what it’s like to be on teams that don’t have one, having endured being a part of two straight 4-13 seasons. Maye didn’t start until Week 6 in 2024, and the club was already 1-4 at that point after Jacoby Brissett started things off during what became a disappointing 2024 Patriots Season. Bad coaching that year also certainly didn’t help.

Still, elite cornerbacks can’t save bad quarterback play. Granted, they can put you over the top against great football teams, but it means little if you don’t have a quarterback who can put you in that position.

Maye on Gonzalez’s Contract Standoff

We haven’t heard any real details behind the deal the team has offered Gonzalez or what his demands may be, but it’s certainly starting to feel like his agent is looking to break the bank when it comes to whatever the final numbers end up being.

If that’s the case, it’s possible things could take a turn given that the team has Maye coming up, as well as a host of players who will see their contracts come to an end after this season. Investing in Maye will mean they’ll need to continue building around him, and that will be tough to do if a good percentage of their salary cap is tied up in two players.

Maye was asked on Wednesday if, after seeing how these negotiations have gone with Gonzalez, whether or not it’s left him to wonder if he may need to wait for a new deal himself.

“I’m not thinking about that right now. I mean, I’m a big fan of Gonzo and kind of how things are playing out,” said Maye. “So I respect him for being out here and competing and wanting to practice. I think that speaks a lot for him wanting to be here. And, I think, I’ve said it before, he’s one of the best corners in the league. So I’m looking forward to playing with him, and I’m glad he’s on our team.”

When pressed, Maye said he’s just trying to live in the moment and he’s focused on getting ready for the season.

“I don’t think it’s hard to think about it. For me, I’m trying to be in the present. Every day, the present— that’s why they call it a present, man. It’s a gift. So I just try to be here, be where my feet are, and try to get better and better.”

But while Maye might not want to think about it, it’s probably safe to say the Patriots are. That’s why even though the hope is that a deal gets done with Gonzalez in the coming weeks, it’s a complicated situation that remains one to watch given the implications.
