Big Vince definitely need help. Really we've revamped every position in the past few years except the interior defensive line, where we've had nothing but stiffs after stiffs.

I don't disagree with the notion that DT is a need. I just see the problems at S, CB and WR as being bigger needs this year, and S and WR as being position where needs match up with draft depth.

It's nothing personal. Everyone here on the board is a cranky old man.

You didn't know that?

Hi Clare - Based on when some of you having been posting in here, I certainly get that vibe. There is no doubt about it.

What I do know is that there are a lot of pessimists in here and instead of taking an impartial view on things, I see a lot of the same comments that have been made over and over and over again.

It gets old and three years ago, I made a statement that maybe the Pats should go 5-11 so that the posters who have been complaining could get something to really complain about.

I had a lot more complaints about this franchise three years ago because three years ago, the defense was in much worse shape and the offense was one-dimensional.

I am more than happy with the Patriots personnel-wise outside of getting one veteran wide receiver (Lloyd), a 4th linebacker who can play three downs and defend the pass (Arthur Brown, Sio Moore and Zavier Gooden all look good to me), a 1st/2nd/3rd round and a 7th roundwide receiver (would love to get Hopkins from Clemson and Gardner from Sienna College), a cornerback to supplement Talib/Dennard (preferably Taylor, Slay or Wilson) on the outside.

They are set at DE and DT contrary to the pessimists and they are set on the offensive line.

The simple fact that Edelman, Ballard, and Vereen are being touted among Brady's "reliable" receivers demonstrates just how dire the situation really is. Regardless of whether I like any of them or not none has shown anything to be categorized as anything more than a hope. Seriously folks WR is the biggest need for this team and it isn't even close. Draft two high and sign another vet.

.

I am as far from " pessimist" as it gets but that doesn't and shouldn't mean that I can't recognize and appreciate valid criticism when people offer it , and posters like Jack, kontra, and even Deus, and others aren't "pessimists" or "cranks" they are actually able to look at the team critically and make valid commentary about their strengths and weaknesses, and whether I agree with them on any particular issue or not I can understand that they are usually making sound arguments and decent points. Minimizing that and mistaking it for knee jerk negativity does nothing to advance any reasonable discussion of it.

This pretty much nails it.

If they can get Woods, Hopkins, Hunter, or Allen in the first, and Wheaton, or Steadman Bailey e.g... In the second or third. I will feel much better about this WR unit for next season.

As I said before they can address their depth issues on other units through free agency and vet cuts, WR Is the unit that needs starters, no other unit does.

Definitely agreed. I'm in my 30's, so don't count me in the "old man" or "cranky old ass" category

We come here to look at the pluses and the minuses on the team and its decisions. In most cases I am much closer to a homer than I ever am to being a pessimist or chicken little, but there are times when the situation calls for concern too.

They are set at DE and DT contrary to the pessimists and they are set on the offensive line.

Everything here is opinionated, so I respect yours and everyone elses thoughts on any matter...but how do you feel we are "set" at the position of DL when all of Ninkovich, Love, Deaderick, Cunningham, and Pryor are in the last years of their deals; and both Wilfork and Kelly only have next year left after that? Obviously we aren't keeping all of those players, so there will be some decent holes to fill at the end of the season.

There are 7 players on the DL with two yrs or less (5 of them in their last yr) of service remaining. How, pray tell, does that make the position "set?" This team has made its bones by drafting a year early in just about every situation, where these kinds of problems are avoided.

The OL can always be added to, and we currently have nothing at all at the position of OT if someone gets hurt besides maybe McDonald or Cannon, who played in less than 15% of all snaps last year and is green as hell. The position of RG can certainly be improved upon over Connelly, who would be better served to be a backup. So right now, we need immediate backups at both outside OL and interior OL, even despite having McDonald, Hix, Svitek, and Cannon which isn't much. It sucked losing Thomas, who allowed only ONE sack in 7 games, but he wanted starter money and deserves it.

There was an article today on PFT that spoke about some GM's feeling that this was a "meat and potatoes" draft, meaning that the depth and talent is in the trenches on OL and DL. I'd find it hard to think that Belichick won't address this situation in the first 3-4 rounds at least in one of the two areas. The interior rush has been pathetic lately, and the depth has been even worse. It is one of the more glaring positions of weakness on the entire team, next to WR.

I think we've talked before about how there aren't too many true needs on the team, besides the usual improvements made every year. Your opinion may have changed since then regarding the WR position due to the loss of Llyod, so that likely went from an obvious need to an even higher obvious need.

I think we all are pretty much set in our desires of the following:

--WR

--DL/OL trenches

--Secondary

It will be interesting to see what order these are chosen in and whether or not they trade down in round #1 to add another pick/two. I'm also expecting a BPA (sometimes known as a WTF) pick somewhere along the lines too, hopefully not in the early rounds though.

If theres any chance we draft deandre hopkins im thrilled.

did the pats offer him one year 2.5 million I don't understand on NFL network it says he will still be a FA next year cause they matched the 2.5 contract offer can someone with more info please tell me how that works ?

He was a RFA [Restricted Free-Agent] THIS YEAR.

Pats offered him a 1-year contract for the 2013-14 season.

Squeelers matched. (meaning they had to pay the same amount of $ for the same time-length term [1-year]. He now belongs to them til March 2014.

In March 14 he becomes an UFA [Unrestricted Free-Agent] and can sign with whoever he and his agent agree with.

Pats offer was 1 year 2.5m which would replace the 1 year 1.3m tender. Unless he sat out the entire season and didnt accrue the required playing time he was going to be a UFA next year regardless.

Basically, as long as he plays (6 games active I believe?) he will have accrued the time he needs to become a UFA next March.

ok so the pats did offer him a one year deal, thank yous both for the reply

I was kind of split on Sander's offer sheet but that's here nor there now but what is here now ( as usual) is that legit no 1'sh WR that can make DBs accountable for him & make that catch in traffic high or low, an outside threat. This is IMPERATIVE that BB fills this void with AHern having surgery & Gronk dealin with his Surgery time is of'da essence especially with Brady havin chemistry with new add ons.

It's really a shame that Anquan Boldin could have been had... twice. The WR situation to date is of the team's own doing. The good new, though, is that I think both Hernandez and Gronk will be ready for the season, from the TE perspective.

Anticipation is building to see Molasses Mike Jenkins bring his talents to Foxboro and work the 3 yd route tree NE is known for....under a team friendly deal NE is also known for

Thank God you managed to squeeze essentially the same troll post in not one but two threads.

Keep up the good work.

We'll see what happens in less than 2 weeks. Really doubt they will pick a WR with the #1. Probably mid-rounds for the best busts.. er, I mean, values...

LOL. When is the last time a 3rd round pick has worked out for the Pats? Hope that this year proves the exception to the rule and we land a stud instead of a bust. Da'Rick Rogers anyone??

If theres any chance we draft deandre hopkins im thrilled.

Well I guess the upside of losing out on Sanders is that this FORCES the Pats to draft a WR this year. Hopkins would be awesome but I won't hold my breath. We aren't known for drafting stud receivers. I remember us passing on Dez Bryant twice. ^_^
