Tannenbaum to be reassigned not fired

I don't want AJ Smith in NY. He put together some good teams. His mistake was letting them go once they hit free agency. He thought he could reload just as easily.

What's even funnier is that Tannenbaum's predecessor, Bradway, was ALSO reassigned rather than fired, and still works in their scouting department.

And they wonder why they're called the Same Ol' Jets...

With 13% of their roster taking up 67% of their cap space in untradeable, uncutable contracts, the Jets are going to be just horrible. They could bring in Vince Lombardi, with Knute Rockne as OC and they'd be horrible next year. It actually makes no sense to bring someone in now. Who good would want to deal with a situation like that next year. Better to bring in a GM to start the reorganization, and let Rex preside of the horror that's going to be the Jets next season. Having to coach the 2013 Jets would be proper penance for him being such a jackass the last 4 years. Then in 2014, after 2 drafts with high picks, you bring in the new HC who by that time will at least have a shot at competing.

This is my point! He DOES know a lot more than Rex Ryan on player personnel.

The smart thing for them to do is to clear their cap problems by cutting them all this offseason. They will be unable to pay more then minimum to fill out their roster, hurting their depth even more. That will get them a very high draft pick which a new GM/new coach might nit screw up.

But I can't see them having the guts to do it.

Word is nobody is getting fired ... Woody is going to use them in his compost pile.

Thank God he's not going to be fired. I would hate to actually have to go back to worrying about them being slightly competitive again.

Woody's first big mistake was thinking if he clung to his remaining Parcells connections it would all take care of itself in the end. He compounded that mistake by actually hanging on the the Parcells FO connections which were his weakest link (he'd left them in cap hell). His second mistake was thinking if he reeled in a BB genius coaching connection it would hurt us and help them. Landing Mangini was actually the stroke of genius that got Tammenbaum promoted to GM. Woody's third mistake was deciding that winning the battle for back page supremacy in NY meant anything at the end of the season. Unless you won that battle on the field and actually, you know, won something tangible like a Hunt Trophy or Lombardi.

Woody has been half assing the building of any foundation in his tenure for over a decade now. Still hasn't figured out that's his problem. Idealy he should be looking for a package deal GM/HC and giving them total control of football ops. But he's created such a mess with this latest version of the SOJ's that the best candidates won't be interested. It will even be tough to locate someone worth hiring to sort it all out behind the cover of a lame duck Rex Ryan final season as a HC. No FO guy in his right mind wants to step into that soap opera situation knowing Woody's FO toady's and cry baby HC and self absorbed players are still aboard and have his ear to undercut them during anything resembling an overhaul and rebuild.

The best thing Woody could do for that team and fan base would be to sell to someone in position to truly clear the decks and obliterate the unaccountable culture he's created that now permeates the entire franchise. But in an era when owners like Kraft and Mara have helped double the value of even the most inept owners franchises, that isn't likely to happen soon. It will take another half a decade at least of being embarassed and frustrated before the trust funder owner takes his doubled $$$ and goes home content to dabble in politics and philanthropy.

Re: Tannenbaum reassigned not fired

If the reports are true, here's hoping that he's reassigned to c(r)ap duty. Those Sanchez/Holmes type deals are great!

Fixed it for you.

Oh wait. He's already in charge of crap duty!

This makes me think Rexy stays given his contract status. I guess Woody would rather pay Tany GM money to do something else rather than just fire him.

This is good news because it appears as though the circus is going to continue....:rocker:

How the he(( do you reassign the General Manager of the team? That is like reassigning the CEO of your company. I guess he is heading to the mailroom .....must have pictures of Woody and Sancheeze jello wrestling together in french maid outfits or something......

Re: Tannenbaum reassigned not fired

As of late, Smith has whiffed on a few picks, but, BB has as well.

He does have more experience than RR though.

As of late?!

The last really good pick Smith made was probably Eric Weddle in 2007.

His Drafts have sucked for 5/6 years. His ability to evaluate players has been shocking.

Certainly some very questionable moves:

- Trading his 2009 2nd to the Pats for a 3rd round pick to take FB Jacob Hester
- Reaching for Larry English at #16 in the 1st round in 2009
- Trading up to #12 for RB Ryan Mathews in 2010
- Reaching for ST specialist Jonas Moutin in the 2nd round in 2011

I don't think any of them has panned out as expected.

Can you think of a safer job in the NFL? I'd be thinking 30 year pension working for San Diego.

Maybe they'll make him the new OC. Woody could save a few bucks.
