what happens if welker goes and we get none of the "big name" guys? I think this board would explode

Welker is gone IMO and sticking to it.
If Welker goes then Hernandez will more than likely take his short to intermediate crossing routes. The Patriots could also draft Tavon Austin to play the position.

It would be tough to see Welker go as he's been a consummate professional and has produced at a level unseen from slot receivers in the NFL.

Trust me..it's going to suck when he goes (IMO) He has been bradys blanket...a great WR..i just see it coming to an end...

No offense to Welker (who I'd love to have back, along with Edelman) but our TEs satisfy the mid range slot receiver need.

Unless Lloyd shows that he's truly a deep thereat (he's kindof a deep threat) that's the area where we need to upgrade - and I'm not sure that any of these guys truly fit that bill.

They seem like they'll demand big bucks that I doubt we'd have if we plan to keep more than one of Talib/Vollmer/Welker. And Amendola is far too injury prone to give a big contract. Ogletree might come cheaper but I have no idea. LOL at Moss.

I know draft hasn't been the best route for us since 2003 for a WR but it might be our only choice next year. Hopefully something is worked out with Welker so it won't matter for the next couple years.

Another thought might be Gaffney if he is recovered by next offseason. He's 32 at the start of next season so he may not be done.

The scary part of losing Welker is the real possiblity of the Jets going after him. You know Rex would break the bank for him. Please NO!

The Jets have already broken the bank and can't afford him in any way, shape or form.

Unlike most here, I believe a deal is already in place and ready to be signed the day after we win the Super Bowl. (See what I did there?)

And I believe Edelman will, too. We'll draft a WR somewhere along the line or pick up someone in FA, but it won't be a big name like Mike Wallace, which is fine with me.

Hartline is a definite option, though.

I don't get the all the Danny Amendola love.

He seems like a more injury prone version of Julian Edelman. Whereas Edelman has 4 years of experience with Brady and will likely be cheaper.

If Welker leaves I would rather try and replace him with a outside the number receiver. We have Gronk, Hernandez, and hopefully Ballard to work the middle of the field.

I don't see Amendola being that expensive coming off a season where he was injured. I could be wrong, though, due to the ever increasing demand for quality slot receivers. If that's the case, and the team lets Welker walk, then Amendola would still be the cheaper option of the two anyway.

As for his injury concerns, Amendola played 14 and 16 games his first two years in the league. This year, his injury was actually a very rare one that was a result of a very well placed hit. I think those "concerns" are overblown, personally.

I would love to see Bowe here, but not at the price he will get. Wallace would be a nice option, but still probably too costly - as for the rest - no thanks and I mean no disrespect to Moss - unless of course, there is a choice between Moss and Branch - Moss all day long.
I would pass on Bowe at $1.5 million. That guy is a fraud.

Hi Lisa. Nice to see you.

I agree on both WW and Edelman. I think the Pats will quietly do a Mankins-like turnaround. WW signed his tender, shut up and played to his contract. In the meantime the Pats have locked down Gronk and Hernandez to long term deals that are fairly cap friendly in the short term, allowing them to sign Welker for 2-4 more years. Edelman too - he won't cost a fortune. Hartline would be nice, but getting all 3 is a tad optimistic.

Rex has no say in this. The Jets cap situation prohibits adding an $8M/yr + hit.

The Jets don't worry me, Denver with Manning, Houston with Schaub, Green Bay with Rodgers do. There is no way they can replace 100+ rec and a first down machine who leads the league in YAC. Welker is one of the biggest reasons Brady stays healthy as he is an instant relif option when they bring heavy pressure. Hopefully Lisa is right because losing him would really damage the Lombardi hopes for the next few years. I really don't understand why they would jeopardize the end of Brady's career instead of maximizing the chances of winning it all. I want one more dynasty before Brady hangs it up, and I believe this team is on the precipice of that, getting rid of Welker would damage it more than anything else i can think of. I sure as hell hope they don't follow a similar path when Wilfork and Brady come up again.

bowe is a bum....based on my FF teams past 2 years..don't want him

Who would be a good fit...scratch that....Who do you want on our roster next year of these potential FAs. Odds are very good we look to free agency for our WR needs seeing as how rookie receivers can be unpredictable.

Greg Jennings
Mike Wallace
Dwayne Bowe
Josh Cribbs
Danny Amendola
Kevin Ogletree
Brian Hartline
Donald Driver
Randy Moss

I don't think any of these will fit in if Welker stays. My order would be (not taking money into account):

Welker
Jennings (a more complete receiver than Wallace)
Wallace (elite deep threat and if we signed edelman then he could try take over the slot)
Amendola (would be a ready made welker replacement even tho i want welker more)
Bowe ( Big Fast Strong... poor hands and inconsistent)
Edelman (Knows the system and has been steadily progressing but lets not pretend he is at these other guys level yet, Special Teams Ace)
Hartline (had a great year and is an nfl # 2 standard receiver)

Moss, Driver, Ogletree and Cribbs don't make this team.

Here is my hope

Pass on all WR free agent (I assume Amendola will be franchised or resigned)
Give Welker a deal (or at least franchise him)
Draft Tavon Austin

salivate over an offense set of

Welker, Gronk, Hernandez and Vereen/or/Demps and Austin coming out of the backfield for a screen or Brady deciding to audible to a hand off to one or the other

I can't imagine Belichick using a first on Austin, he would have to fall to late 2nd.

I don't see the patriots paying big bucks to anyone not named Welker.

I see us re-signing Edelman in any case.

I see us bringing in a half dozen wide receivers, as we always do.

If we didn't re-sign Welker. (which would be a bummer) I would definitely love to see Mike Wallace in a Pats uniform, the guy's an absolute STUD, then we'd bring in Edelman to take care of the slot, maybe draft a WR then we'd have Wallace, Lloyd, Edelman, and maybe a draft pick.

Again, I would much rather have Welker back, and if he is back, forget about spending big buck on another WR such as Wallace.

EDIT: Want to expand the topic for a moment, are there any FA pass rushers, or interior guys worth of note that will be in the market next year?? Or any notable defensive backs??
