Ras-I Dowling placed on Injured Reserve

THE worst pick, the most inexcusable pick, in the entire Belichick Era. You had all night to make this pick or trade it. It was as valuable a spot as any in the draft. Plenty of decent players available, including pass rushers like Brooks Reed, the kid from Arizona. A horrible, horrible job by the F.O. and a player with such a regular injury history that you shouldn't have touched him until the 3r round at the earliest. Ridiculous.

I believe I've mentioned this before, but....

Instead of Dowling/Vereen, the Patriots could have rebuilt the WR corps by taking two of the following:

Young/Smith/Cobb

The Patriots could conceivably have been putting out an empty backfield receiving package of

Gronk
Hernandez
Welker
Cobb
Smith

Enlighten us all on the New England Patriots plan of action going forward.

2 16 48 Tavon Wilson DB Illinois
2 2 34 Patrick Chung DB Oregon
2 9 41 Darius Butler DB Connecticut
2 31 62 Terrence Wheatley DB Colorado

let's do it!

Last season after Ras-I Dowling was placed on Injured Reserve, did the New England Patriots trade for a cornerback?

Last season after Leigh Bodden was cut, did the New England Patriots trade for a cornerback?

At what point last year was the injury situation this dire?

And you speak of midseason trades with the Patriots like one has never happened. Did you forget about Deion Branch?

The subject matter was prior to the trade deadline.

The patriots organization should stick to drafting linemen, linebackers, running backs, tight ends, and kickers because its obvious they have no idea of what it takes to be a starting quality dback or wide receiver. Next draft, just use the draft annuals and stop trying to be the smartest kid in the room when drafting the skill positions by drafting all these guys three rounds before they're projected to be drafted....

Problem: There's only one football to go around per play. Oh and Cobb and Smith are essentially the same player.

How many of the other defensive backs have been placed on injured reserve:

Patrick Chung - no
Steven Gregory - no
Tavon Wilson - no
Nate Ebner - no
Devin McCourty - no
Alfonzo Dennard - no
Kyle Arrington - no
Sterling Moore - no
Marquice Cole - no

The New England Patriots have nine defensive backs on the 53 man roster.

With regard to Deion Branch, the New England Patriots traded Randy Moss to the Minnesota Vikings in the same season.

Both starting safeties in that group have been injured, three are rookies, one CB has had to move to safety to cover for the rash of injuries, the other CB is the worst in the league, one CB isn't much behind him, and the final CB is a special teamer only. Again, at no point in the 2011 season was the injury situation, IR or not, this dire. What could it possibly hurt to explore a trade for Talib?

Not to change the subject, but this is what everyone and their mother was saying about the Miami Heat when LeBron and Bosh came aboard. Fast forward one more year and the Heat are the defending world champions.

Not to mention a shot at Courtland Finnegan & LeRan Landry would've been an upgrade also not sure if it would have been a cap hit or how much money was left to pay and I know this ship has sailed ( See missed INT SB vs Giants) but Assante Samuel to have been had and fits in with BB and his schemes. Just FED UP with not addressing obvious issues in our secondary. BB needs to look what's out there with trade deadline next week. Unless Troy Brown is comin back to play with DBs why do I get this image Of Edelman back there?

1.) The Patriots have made it work. The Packers make it work. New Orleans makes it work. Etc...

2.)
Smith is 6'1", 204, and averages 17.4 ypc
Cobb is 5'10, 191 and averages 11.3 ypc

There's no problem there.

another one (db draft pick) bites the dust.

you would think with the number of high picks spent on the secondary that at least 1 would have panned out, just out of sheer dumb luck. my finger is pointing at the coaching.

Yup.... This team could reasonably be fielding:

QB - Brady
HB - Ripley*
3rddownRB - Woodhead
WR1 - Welker
WR2 - Smith
WR3 - Cobb
TE1 - Gronk
TE2 - Hernandez
LT - Solder
LG - Mankins
C - Connolly
RG - Waters
RT - Vollmer

DL/LB - Wilfork
DL/LB - Mayo
DL/LB - Spikes
DL/LB - Hightower
DL/LB - Jones
DL/LB - Ninkovich
DL/LB - Love/Deaderick
CB - Samuel
CB - McCourty
CB - Arrington/Dennard
S - Wilson
S - Landry
S- Chung/Gregory

That would be an interesting lineup. I'm probably missing a couple of other players that could have been gotten with reasonable expense, effort.

*Typo/edit fail.... should be Ridley. Hat tip to Goheels22002

You're the one hitting the panic button.

133 replies on Dowling...i didn't think he rated that high.

I imagine nobody is happy abotu this, but if someone is, it must be #158 - Arrington.

I see you have The Talented Mr. Ripley at running back. Matt Damon?

Deus, Nicely done! Ditto to Goheels. That's a good lookin line-up on O & D.

Thanks, in large part, to the crooked refs.. But let's get back on topic.
