Is Asante worth 7.79 million a year?

Ok, we all know that Asante had 12 Ints on the season (10 during the regular season and 2 in the play-offs). Of those 10 regular season ones, at least 5 were because of pressure on the QB and NOT because he beat out the WR for the ball.

Also, Asante is a lousy tackler. He goes for the show-boat hit too much and doesn't wrap up.

Now, don't get me wrong, he is a good CB. But I don't consider him to be GREAT or ELITE by any stretch of the imagination.

Second, Franchising isn't about the money, it's about the control. He wouldn't sign it until he had to . . . meanwhile we'd try to re-sign him, trade him or could rescind the tag if it were unsigned.

Samuel has been tackilng very well so you have had the wrong player the last 8 games.

Belichick seemed very comfortable with late in the season so who knows what actually is going on.

He's not worth 7.79 million if you have Ty Law and Otis Smith in their prime on the roster. But the problem is they're not in their prime anymore, O-T-I-S is a coach while Law is in KC. Even if we draft a CB in the 1st round I'd still keep Samuel for a year on 7.79 mil.

How can you alibi interceptions based on pressuring the qb? Does that mean other db's who had five interceptions for the year were just as good. I would franchise him in a heartbeat.

this is a real tough question .i would pay him if i knew for sure he would end up with the jets .but if i knew he would be in the nfc or out of our division i dont think i would pay him that much.but there is no way to know for sure so i guess i would pay him and not take a chance he ends up in green.the last thing the pats need is another player in green that knows our system inside and out.

I say keep him ,but as long as it works for both sides.. I think we could have a good young secondary with Hobbs and Samual tied up for the long hall, but if he wants to get paid, then let him get paid..

I think Asante will get his money one way or the other...Love for him to stay,but I think he will be wearing a different team logo...Hopefully it will be in the nfc...REDSKINS.....I think earn the right to get paid....He done his contract...I know this is a business....Smart move is tag & trade....Maybe this won't have to happen.....olive branch,good will ,but truly don't think it is going to work this way....Please no MEION DRAMA!!!

And 3rds are very rare it could be a 4th.

I don't believe for a moment that we'd get less than a 2007 #2 for him if F&Ted. Why not take it ?

Or my preference, trade him for a 2008 #1. With a full year putting Samuel on the credit card, interest free, some team would undoubtedly do that.

Redskins are over the cap in 2007 and Daniel Schneider has blown his wad.

That's the key to this whole thing IMO. I agree with what BF says about controlling his exit from the organization and getting somethning in return for him if he leaves.

But it also seems like when BB and Pioli sit down to hash this out and decide if they want to start up negotiations again with Samuel, they have factors to consider like what's available in FA? What CB crop looks like in the draft?

Seems like franchising him for a year while drafting his replacement/s this year might be the best way to go. He isn't going to like it, and it would likely make the chances of a long term deal next to none, but so what.

Well we have the $7M or so that we would have spent on him to improve the team. Whether it's an average CB and an upgrade somewhere else (London Fletcher ?) or a Nate Clements, whatever. If we spend the $7M well we can come out even on talent even if it's a drop at CB but an improvement elsewhere.
