.......or black cornerbacks.....See it's not funny,Andy, when you turn the "joke",around:bricks:
Its not a joke when you turn it around.
See it is a joke and ironic because there are not many white WRs. There are a lot of black corners.
If we had 3 left handed QBs would be insensitive to make a joke about that?
Seek a way to call something inappropriate and you can create one.

And what do they have to do with two TE sets?

Nothing. But the signing of another TE shows their commitment to the two TE set. In that case they don't need another WR. If they wanted to scrap it. Branch or Gaffney would have been back

So Kellen Winslow put up 700 yards plus receiving last season. Is there some hidden injury news that I'm not aware of? Because the reason the Pats signed the guy was to replce an unhealthy Hernandez. I don't think they sign him if he doesn't pass the physical this time around.

Can he grasp the offense immediately? A tall order. But maybe if he just learns his responsibilities only, it's doable. Besides, offense is offense. The offense has the advantage in knowing the play they are running. I don't expect him to learn everything that Hernandez did in one shot. But he does need to get on the same page as Brady, that's really the key.

gaffney is not a slot in this offense.....

branch cannot gain separation like he used to, i'd have him behind edleman as a WR AND as a roster spot

welker>edleman>branch

Lloyd>Gaffney who may or may not >salas, but salas makes more long term sense

why carter? they have been generating good pressure, the players they have have more versatility, and they have good depth.....

Agree. Would rather see Bequette get into the rotation.

Would love to see a pass rush d-line of

Bequette-Cunningham-Wilfork-Jones

Fair enough. I'm a bit wary of Carter because I don't know if/when he's going to regain his explosiveness coming off the quad injury. The others I certainly wouldn't mind, though.

I think concern over Carter's health is a very valid thing. On the other hand, the Raiders are reportedly giving him a second look at, so that would at least seem to indicate that they didn't consider him to be too far off when they first brought him in.

I'm looking at a passing down front four of Jones/Wilfork/Carter/Cunningham(other), and I'm thinking that QBs will have to keep their heads on a swivel. I don't know if it matches up with Buffalo's line, or the Giants line, etc..., but the inclusion of a healthy Carter opposite the young gun would give great pressure on the ends, and Wilfork is getting pretty good pressure up the middle. QBs will have nowhere to go.

With the amount of money the team pissed away this offseason, I don't see any reason not to bring Carter in now. They can cut one of the other DL and try to get him on the PS if they think highly enough of the guy. If Carter needs a few more weeks, he can be inactive, just like the guy he's replacing would have been.

Put me down as
Welker>Edelman>Gaffney>Branch as WRs

Edelman's numbers, despite people pimping him and him getting single coverage, are awful for a WR2 in a Brady-led offense. Welker's numbers are better and he's drawing brackets and double teams, and is being held out of a lot of the plays. Edelman's been a joke to this point, and it's not his fault. It's the team's fault.

Quick note on the first two games: Wes Welker is currently the team's leader in yards per catch, while Lloyd, Edelman and Hernandez are all under 10 ypc.

Great job by the staff!

This situation just more clearly accentuates how the Pats shoud have drafed Connor Barwin. He had the versatility to play TE in a pinch, giving us a Mike Vrabel-lite. ;-)

We all would love to see this but it's most likely never going to happen because Belichick has deluded himself into thinking Ninkovich is an elite DE.

"It's kind of funny, actually, to think that a team could go from having too many to not enough targets with exactly two roster moves. After all, the Seahawks acquired Owens and Winslow on the premise that they were not risking much. If anything went sideways, they could always cut them. And that's just what Seattle did, and while the departure of Owens was not all that shocking considering he dropped as many passes as he caught in his two exhibition games, the release of Winslow was an out-of-the-blue shock.

At least it was for anyone who has been watching practice. He was very involved with what Seattle was doing on offense. He was the receiving specialist in Seattle's two tight-end sets, and someone who gave Seattle's defense fits in practice. He is big enough to give defensive backs problems in coverage, and too precise a receiver to be covered by a linebacker."

This should be stickied to every page of this thread as it is the only relevant info to be posted.

Edelman's numbers, despite people pimping him and him getting single coverage, are awful for a WR2 in a Brady-led offense.

There are various DVOA and advanced stats out there, but Edelman's production in 2010 & 2011 was basically amongst the worst in the league. Obviously, sample size was small, but when he was on the field, he wasn't getting open and he wasn't catching the ball at a great rate.

I'm all for optimism and players developing; I would love for Edelman to grow into a great all around receiver. But I can't expect him being more than a slot guy.

I started a thread called "what's the fascination with Edelman" not because I don't think he can't be a good player for this team, but because I can't think of many players who the fanbase has so willingly accepted and embraced as an inevitable replacement for one of its stars with so little production to back it up.

Not to mention, Edelman is just as much a free agent as Welker after the season. If anything, there's always the tag with Welker, and obviously we wouldn't do that with Julian.

Pretty soon anyone who is 6'4"/ 240 and taller will be forming a line at Gillette.
NBA players will be coming out of retirement to fill out applications here.

To be fair to BB, I think the recent drafts and the switch to the 4-3 have shown that he's not as deluded about Ninkovich as some around here were.

All I could think of when I first heard about the Winslow signing was, "so many TE's, so few on the field.

Even after this signing the Pats still will only have 3 TE's ready to play next Sunday night. There certainly will be an interesting TC next season, and there should be no doubt that the Pats will carry 4 TE's eventually this season and into the next. Who the 2nd 2 will be is another story.

Belichick knows exactly what he has in Ninko. Ninkovich has proven a solid DE. And he has a good track record as a solid OLB. There's always value in that.

But, if Carter were 100% healthy and performing even near the level of last season, there is no way Belichick would put Ninko on the field ahead of him. Carter would start and play in every grouping. Ninko would see time rotationally at LDE & maybe either 43OLB position were injury to force him to play there.

Couldn't agree more BMC...i dont get the Branch man love around here. He is ineffective on the outsides at this stage of his career. And one huge drawback is he doesn't play on Special Teams....same for Gaffney. I clearly see BB thinking now imagine if he had kept Lloyd - Branch and Gaffney. That's three guys on gameday who doesn't play on ST's. So this is where Edelman shows his worth on Special Teams and a up and coming WR. I am sure you all remember Troy Brown he wasn't setting the World on fire early on in his career either. Edelman came in and was behind the Greatest Slot WR in the game and a Great TE in the making in Gronk...not to mention Hernandez. His numbers wern't stellar in years two and three but it as not like we needed him. The Point is Edelman may be much better than regarded.

The bolded part should be stapled to the heads of every poster who tries pimping the decision to jump Edelman from WR4-5 to the team's WR2 despite his production history. It's one thing to use the "faith in BB" thing, but it's another to be actively pimping Edelman the player when he's done nothing on the field to indicate that he's ready for the job.

in this offense, with a healthy hernandez, WR2 is more than likely the 4th option, sometimes the 5th if the RB is potentially involved......

this offense is evolving.....in their 2-2 sets, the slot guy just isn't as huge an option as it was in the past, and better be able to block as well

doesn't mean there isn't a spot for welker in the 2-2 sets, doesn't mean that welker isn't a better option than edleman in other sets, but this offense is different, this roster is constructed different, and you need it look at it with a different eye

i have zero issue with the offense or roster right now

obviously with some much emphasis on hernandez and the flexibility of the 2-TE sets afforded by gronk/hernandez, losing hernandez on the 3rd play threw a kink into the offense in arizona......the only fault i have with them is not being able to adjust quickly enough......

but this team as constructed just doesn't need a branch or gaffney right now, and edleman has value for what they need out of that position
