A couple of things:

1.) Andre Carter will likely be back.

2.) If you said last year in training camp that Andre Carter and Mark Anderson would be the first pair of Patriots defenders since 1986 to have double digit sacks in the same season, people would think you were doing drugs.

3.) Relying on rookies to replace the sacks lost by at least Anderson is no given, but who said that Jones would get all those sacks? If the defense improves, sacks can be added by multiple positions. Maybe Spikes makes the next step and becomes a strong inside rusher and gets 3-4 sacks. Maybe an improved secondary allows Chung to blitz more and gets 3-4 more sacks.

If they stay healthy they ought to be the favorites. Things are aligning for them once again, the only other AFC contendor that didn't take a huge hit this offseason was Houston (Williams was out most of last season anyhow). Even then, Houston still has to prove they are here to stay and not a one year wonder.

I'm not too much into SB projections in June and, unlike many others, I don't think we'll know who the "real competition" is until sometime in October.

I'll be willing to hazard a guess before the season starts in early September. For now, I'll leave the projecting to Vegas odds-makers.

But, you do remember the Cowboys of 92 and 93, who actually beat those Bills in successive years, and the Packers of 96 and 97 (a W and an L) and the Broncos of 97 and 98 (two W's) and it seems to me there was a team from the AFC East that did it in 03 and 04, but the name escapes me for now... :singing:

Maybe before you facepalm me, you should ask Belichick if he thinks we'll make the Super Bowl this year and see what he says. Even Thomas at Pats Planet never looked past a whole training camp and season.

Belichick is a coach. He coaches the team. They have to worry about TC and the season first. We as fans can discuss our team's chances of making the Super Bowl with absolutely no repercussions on the team whatsoever.

The Pats have hands down the best offense in the AFC. They have the talent to make it to the Superbowl. What remains to be seen is how much a leap forward our young defense can make. Obviously, they ranked at the bottom last year, and this team still made it to the championship game and were 2 and a half minutes away from winning it all.

The Pats also have no suffered any significant free agent losses unless you count Ochocinco, I don't. This team is essentially the same from last year but with more talent on offense and defense, add brandon lloyd to the mix at receiver, add fells at TE, minus Light but add Solder as our starter at LT. Defense - add Gregory at safety, Fanene at DE, and a couple vet, maybe they'll stick CBs. Return a healthy Dowling, see if McCourty bounces back. Now add 1st round rookies Chandler Jones and Dont'a Hightower on defense. There's a LOT of room for improvement!

In other words, if we remain healthy, and the defense gels, this is a championship contending club! 2012 is gonna be an exciting year! Let's get another Lombardi boys! Go Pats!

Looks like Harvin is requesting a trade from Minnesota I wouldn't think twice about coughing up a second for him.
Could you imagine what this offense could do adding a Percy Harvin at wideout?
Even if it's only one season that's super bowl or bust for a second.
Then I hate to say it he possibly could get Welkers money, but think about the possibilities of stretching the field.
If Belichick had him circled coming out of college like it was rumored, he should be on the horn right now, with the Vikings GM, i'd even throw in a 2014 3rd for good measure.

There are so many variables and weird things that can change a season — an injury, a kicker shanking a chip shot FG to miss a tying AFCCG field goal, a QB waiting for the playoffs to throw his first INT in a kajillion passes.

But you've gotta like the Pats' chances. The reloading they've done in the past 3-4 years has been pretty impressive. And this year they've added top-level talent and significant depth.

What I like most (well, beyond the talent) is how battle-tested this team is. The '10 team was loaded with rookies and went to 14-2 against a killer schedule; last year, of course, they scraped their way to 13-3 and an AFC title, coming (as I believe Shmessy put it) one Gronkle away from the SB title.

Winners win. It'll be one week at a time, for sure, but on a hot summer day, it's good to be a Pats fan.

I say let's get to training camp and see the boys in pads before we start making predictions like this. I know this isn't keeping in line with the theme of the thread, but I just don't like predicting anything until we see the guys playing some type of real competitive football. Everyone looks good right now for the most part. Let's see them really practicing before we get too excited about what's on paper.

I post that late and half asleep....I should have posted it's been since the 90s bills that a team lost a SB then returned to the game a year later.
