Re: Patriots transaction, per Globe: Light placed on reserve/retired list
Could the timing have something to do with the salary cap?
Maybe if the Patriots are thinking of making some type of draft day deal Light's retirement two days before the draft might give them some financial freedom?
Just a theory that is most likely incorrect.
I was looking at it more towards going into the draft with as few as possible 'tells,' One may or may not see the loss of our franchise left tackle as a possible 'tell' depending upon how they view the current state of our offensive linemen.
A reasonable debate could be made for both sides, as the loss of Light, the Mankins ACL situation, and the long term uncertainty of Vollmer could lead to questioning of our long term prognosis at the position.
On the other hand, we seem to have made some moves like the signing of Gallery and last yr's high draft pick of Solder that would argue towards our offensive line situation at tackle being just fine.
Or you may look at it with an eye towards the conspiracy theorists, as it very well be just be a smokescreen.
I honestly believe there's probably nothing to read into it at all, but in the same vein I am still a bit surprised that they didn't just wait a few more days.
I wasn't even thinking about any possible salary cap ramifications, as they already had 10+ million before this announcement, so I would doubt that was the case personally.
