Re: Patriots transaction, per Globe: Light placed on reserve/retired list

Light placed on retired list - Extra Points - Boston.com

I'll hold out hope that he changes his mind, but I'd like to wish him well in his retirement.

The timing of this announcement seems odd to me.

You'd think if they waited this long, they'd probably just wait another couple/few days until after the draft.

I wouldn't have guessed an announcement 2 days prior to the draft.

Well, it's still not exactly final, not official from him, but this break-up is lasting longer than the average Kardashian marriage.

Sad to see him go.

Who cares? He's retired, there's no good strategy to placing him on the reserve list, it's just bookkeeping.

2 days before the draft, lol?

"There's no strategy?"

Why don't you educate me and Bill Belichick and what the team should have done, and why.

Three potential reasons I can think of:

  • Doing it now makes it easier to recruit UDFA OTs after the draft.
  • Somebody has some lull-before-the-storm free time.
  • Saves them from answering questions about his status in the press conferences surrounding the draft.

Re: Patriots transaction, per Globe: Light placed on reserve/retired list

Per Roche (WBZ All Access) Light is out of town and their will be a formal announcement when he returns. Probably made the decision and informed the team and they want the roster space for draft picks and possibly another FA and the best UDFA's they can land.

I'm not trying to "educate" you or anyone on anything.

I said that it seems odd that the move was made 48 hrs before the draft.

We kind of you know--try and keep people guessing as to what our moves and needs might be. It's kind of a draft philosophy.

I see absolutely no benefit in doing it today, as opposed to early next week.

It's just an opinion, I wasn't trying to get your big girl panties in a bunch.

If only Brad Childress was still around, I'd assume that this was done so that he'd trade in front of the Patriots and take a tackle that we didn't want.

And maybe there's something to that line of thinking.

I always assume that most things are done for a reason around here, so that's the only reason why I acted surprised about the timing. When Light made his comments last week about 'not knowing for sure,' I figured that there would be an announcement very soon after the draft.

There very well may be nothing at all to it, I actually figure that there isn't anything to read into it. Some things are just how they seem, with nothing more to look into it.

Nonetheless, one can understand that bringing up the timing issue may have led to some good discussion, and that was the only intention.

Re: Patriots transaction, per Globe: Light placed on reserve/retired list

Could the timing have something to do with the salary cap?

Maybe if the Patriots are thinking of making some type of draft day deal Light's retirement two days before the draft might give them some financial freedom?

Just a theory that is most likely incorrect.

I was looking at it more towards going into the draft with as few as possible 'tells,' One may or may not see the loss of our franchise left tackle as a possible 'tell' depending upon how they view the current state of our offensive linemen.

A reasonable debate could be made for both sides, as the loss of Light, the Mankins ACL situation, and the long term uncertainty of Vollmer could lead to questioning of our long term prognosis at the position.

On the other hand, we seem to have made some moves like the signing of Gallery and last yr's high draft pick of Solder that would argue towards our offensive line situation at tackle being just fine.

Or you may look at it with an eye towards the conspiracy theorists, as it very well be just be a smokescreen.

I honestly believe there's probably nothing to read into it at all, but in the same vein I am still a bit surprised that they didn't just wait a few more days.

I wasn't even thinking about any possible salary cap ramifications, as they already had 10+ million before this announcement, so I would doubt that was the case personally.
