I read somewhere that the rams are trying to acquire the 4th overall pick, so it now makes sense why.

I've heard the opposite, that there are 4 players they would love to have: Ricardson, Blalock, Kalil, Claiborne, which is why they were fine moving to 6.
Also that they see Richardson as a perfect complement to Jackson, not as a replacement.
Jackson was at ESPN last week, and someone (probably that boxo Greenberg) said that 2 RB offenses are becoming so popular and asked him if he would like his career extended by the Rams taking a RB to split his job with him. He said no, like you would expect any competitiive athlete to say.
I have a feeling that is where these type of rumor mongering stories come from.
There was nothing adamant in his answer, no drawing of a line in the sand, or any real implication that I could see, only that he didn't want them to draft a guy to take half his job away.

Jackson is still a top 5 back in the NFL. Amazing the disrespect he's getting here. Guy is as complete a back there has been in the league since he's been around, can run catch and block, and is still only 29. Now, 7 mil is too much, but if he can be had for 3-4 mil, you have to do that.

What? are you his agent or something?

If he is legitimately still a top-5 back in this league then there is NO EFFING way that he'd settle for 3-4M a year. If he did, you'd have to ask yourself why? Sure there is the occasional "one last shot at a ring" types out there but those are rarer then you think. He'd be a feature back (with the ego that goes with it), taking a major cut to come to a RBBC system where he'd share touches with a couple "wet behind the ears" kids. That scenario screams "buyer beware".

Nope, if he is a legit top-5 with 1-2 years of high-level play left in him, then he'll command money that would be better be spent elsewhere here in NE.

I think he'd have close to a career year here. He's been the only offense the Rams have had for the past few seasons, he'd be coming into the second most prolific passing attack in league history (yardage), that would surely open up some running lanes for him.

If there was a chance he came in at a discounted salary I think he'd thrive, however, I don't think a RB with his amount of touches is worth breaking the bank for.

I'm talking about wear and tear and what he has left, not how he fits the offense.
There is certainly a lot of evidence with other RBs that says this year is likely to be the year he hits the wall.

Rams | Steven Jackson, Trent Richardson unlikely to share backfield
Mon, 16 Apr 2012 07:39:39 -0700

The St. Louis Rams would presumably either trade or release RB Steven Jackson if they select Alabama RB Trent Richardson in the NFL Draft. The team will not pay Jackson $7 million in 2012 to share the job with a player certain to eclipse him soon. Head coach Jeff Fisher reportedly loves Richardson.

He can catch ........... AND he's on my fantasy team! LOL!.

Seriously, if he's willing to take a paycut (as opposed to being cut) he can give us a couple of years at 15 touches a game (Wow! in fourth quarter). One thing about Steven Jackson is he's a killer in December.

Back to Earth, again he'd have to take the pay cut ................. I can see the Jets targeting him . Finally, this ASSUMES the Rams draft Richardson.

By the way, the original article that this was picked up from, by Peter King, blatalntly states he thinks there is almost no way this will happen, and is entirely speculation based on King thinks Fisher loves Richardson and that the Rams wouldn't pay Jackson 7 mill to split time with his eventual replacement, so it is more than premature to take this with any seriousness.

Sure, but there are two problems with this.

One: What teams would really go after him? Not a team with a top flight RB. Not a team with cap issues. Not a team that isn't reaching the playoffs either way. This basically limits the teams to the Patriots Jets Bengals Broncos and maybe 49ers. Teams that can afford him don't need him or aren't looking for a 29 year old RB. Teams that need him (Steelers, Lions) can't afford him.

Two: I think he's a top 5 RB. I really do. He's not as good as Rice Foster Peterson or McCoy, but he's probably the best after that group. Problem is, there is enough out there for a team to just as easily say he isn't, and not offer him $7m a year (and that, combined with his age / mileage would make it pretty easy).

I'm not saying the Pats get him, but he would be a substantial improvement on the current RB situation for very little actual cost.

Premature, sure, but the bolded is true, and the Rams have been looking to trade up to 4.

In any event sj isn't coming here, not for 7 million. If he restructures for half of that, i would consider.

Do you have a link that the Rams are looking to trade up?
As I said earlier, my understanding is they are happy with whichever of the 4 falls to them, and the article in question does NOT say they are trying to trade up.

It is also total speculation that even if they did trade up that they would not want Jackson still on the team. A lot of the discussion is that they have no backup for Jackson, and no legit 3rd down back, so Richardson would be a good complement.

At this point in his career, Steven Jackson is just a big name. Even if we did acquire him, we would not be acquiring the "highlight reel" that we are envisioning in your head. If we did acquire him, I'm sure it would be similar to our Fred Taylor acquisition. Good/serviceable in flashes, but not a game changer.
Bullcrap. At this stage of his career, he is WAY more comparable to Corey Dillion than to Fred Taylor. He's 4 years younger than Taylor was when he arrived (and 1 year younger than Dillion). Not to mention that while Dillon and Taylor were fine backs, Jackson is better than each of them.

I don't think for a second it'll happen, but to compare Jackson to Taylor is silly.

Fred Taylor never came close to the player Steven Jackson is. He's a great character guy as well.

Never came close? Fred Taylor is a hall of fame running back.

I think this is 50-50, at best.
He's 15th on the all time rushing list and 13th in yards per game. It should be at least 50-50. He outperformed a lot of guys who are already in the hall of fame.

And he's certainly on Steven Jackson's level.

32nd all time in rushing TDs, 21st all time in rushing yards per game, 25th all time in yards from scrimmage, 22nd all time in touches. One Pro Bowl appearance.

I loved Fred Taylor. They are both great RBs, but Steven Jackson is a credible threat in the passing game. He will far exceed Taylor's yards from scrimmage by the time he plays thirteen seasons or however long Fred Taylor played.

Lol, you can't be serious.

He'd stub his toe on the way up to the podium delaying his entry for another 4-5 weeks.

Taylors career through 8 years compares very favorable to Jackson's after 8 years. Jackson has also had more touches, and theoretically more wear and tear.

But the nickname Fragile Freddy stuck.
