Salary cap #'s as of 3/30/12

IIRC, someone said that the Pats elected to use the $1.6 Redskin/Cowboy cap bonus this year, rather than next, and that this was an indication that they plan on spending to the max this year (which makes sense). Have I got this right? What could they do with the $8M left after the rookies?

Mayo can't restructure until 12 months after the extension was filed.

You can always restructure a deal. What you cant do is raise the salary over the course of the initial 12 months. So if they just change terms of the payment (i.e. turn base salary into a bonus or defer part of the option until 2013) it is allowed under the terms of the CBA. But if they were to add a year on the deal and give him an extra 5 million bonus today they would not allow the deal to happen.

Thanks to you and Jason and others who know a lot more about the Cap than I do. I got a little confused by the discussion.

To review the bidding, the pats cap is $9.9 with Light on the Roster and as much as $4.5 higher if he retires?

Yes the number is with Light on the roster. I believe if he retires he saves 5 million on the cap.

Ravens look in trouble with only 42 players under contract and 1.7 mill of cap room, if I am reading this right.
Pitt also is light on players and only 5-6mill to spend.

Though Im not familiar with the Ravens cap the number of players bit is misleading. What that means is number of the top 51 that have signed their deals. The Ravens have a large number of RFAs plus Ray Rice under the tag who have yet to sign them. They are already accounted for in the 1.7 million number for cap purposes. They just are not yet officially under contract. Had Hoyer not signed just the other day for the Patriots you would have had one less under contract but the cap number would not have changed at all.

It is not clear the Ocho restructure is included. It is also not clear that any choices between using cap money this year or in 2013 is included, the example being the additional $1.6M from DAL and WASH.

I haven't seen any mention of any choice in how you use the $1.6M. It was simply awarded to the 28 teams not penalized. As for what they can do with the $ left after the rookies, they carried over $6.9M last season and I'd imagine they will want to carry several million over again into 2013 which will remain a flat $120M or so cap. Brady's cap hit is $21M now in 2013, and if they get a deal done with one of the TE's his cap will increase dramatically because of the size of the deal vs. their rookie deals. Those two circumstances alone would eat up several milion. And they will want to have a cushion for in season replacements of about $2M.

But 42 seems very low. Do they have 9 RFAs that have not signed the tender?

They had like 12 RFA's plus Rice. They let a couple walk, so yeah, they could have 8 RFA's plus Rice tendered/tagged but not signed.

The extra room we have is for the draft and a mid-season contract extension with either Gronk or Vollmer (depending on the seriousness of his injury and the likelihood of it nagging).

Just to further muddy the waters, Ravens Insider (who seems pretty connected probably via Ozzy or someone in the Ravens FO) has posted a slightly different list of cap #'s as of 3/31... His has NE at $9.49M under. As Miguel - whom we all miss - used to say, these are only a snapshot in time and tracking teams is difficult because we seldom see the fine print in contracts - we just get the basics as leaked to media. He assumed anything within about $2M of actual was as close as he could hope to get.

If I get a chance Ill look into it. They currently have 47 players signed.

Does that include or not include the tenders?

Edit: Nevermind, it would have to since the report listed 42. They must have 5 unsignwed tenders outstanding. This confirms my initial point, they only have 1.7mill and haven't signed a full team yet.

The $ amount of the tenders count from the moment they are made. Same as tags once placed. Just for technical purposes the players themselves apparently don't count against the 80 man roster UNTIL they have signed them.

The guys who put together the salary cap and rookie pool numbers is clearly, for some twisted reason, pretending to be a Jets fan. A mystery, indeed.

I don't care if he's a fan of the Allen Wranglers, he's damn good at what he does.

With the loss of Miguel (hope he's doing okay), he's the best we have on the boards right now.

I have a hard time believing he's a NYJ fan too though, he seems awfully intelligent.

This analysis may or may not be accurate after all benefits are added. In addition the floors were at least as important as the caps. The original offer did not force the teams to spend the cap. 2011 showed that some teams will spend much less if they can.

This is interesting stuff, Florio is saying that original deal that the union called "worst deal in the history of sports" is better than the one they got:

I say we make a run at Ladarius Webb and see if they can match it? If nothing else we make them spend what little cap space they have left!

He'd make a bigger impact than any player we pick at 31. I'm leaning towards moving McCourty to FS and draft a cb. Mark Barron will be gone before we pick and I don't think any of the other safeties can start for us.

If McCourty doesn't do well at FS, you can move him back to cb. The way football is played today. I don't think you can have enough cb's. Would love to throw these guys out there against a spread; Webb, Dowling, McCourty and Arrington. Could still have a 2 deep of Chung and Gregory.
