I have no idea exactly how it works, but all I know is it has to do with losing players in FA. So do we getting any compensation picks for Lawfirm/Anderson??

Not this year. The picks for Anderson/Green-Ellis will be next year.

Not until next year for them. You get compensation picks the next year for players lost, but don't expect much since the Pats added so many players this offseason and they offset each other.

I can't remember who the Pats lost last year, but I think many of the additions the Pats made would negate them. So I wouldn't expect much this year either.

So, we probably won't be getting any compensation picks at all?? Because I do know we have no picks after round 4. So if we don't get any, unless Bill trades down for some, we'll be done by round 4 then.

I can't see BB not trading down at least once.

The cost of 5th, 6th and a 7th is about the same as moving down 4 or 5 spots in Round 2.
We'll have the picks if we want them.

On the other hand, we could trade the Round 4 pick for a 2013 third and not bother to draft on Sunday.

This guy seems to have done a detailed analysis, comparable to what adamjt13 used to do for so many years. After trading away so many draft picks the Raiders will be picking up several comp picks: a 3rd for Nnamdi Asomugha; a 3rd or 4th for Zach Miller; and a 4th or 5th for Robert Gallery.

As noted above the Patriots won't be receiving any compensatory picks.

The only other team in the division he projects getting any are the Jets: two 6ths and one 7th. As for other AFC playoff teams, he has the Ravens getting one 4th and the Steelers picking up two 7th rounders.

2012 Compensatory Draft Pick Predictions - Mocking The Draft

In addition to the explanations offered in the link above, this article gives as detailed an explanation as you will find anywhere, even though it is three years old and not specific to the current draft the way the column above is.

AdamJT13: Projecting the 2009 Compensatory NFL Draft Picks

As far as the current selection of picks that the Patriots own goes, I can almost guarantee that will change over the course of the draft.

So we lose comp picks if we added someone? I don't remember that.

It is an unknown formula the the NFL uses, but the basic tenant is if you lose a high price free agent and you don't sign one, you will get a comp pick. The Pats did not lose anyone of serious value last year, and made several signing of note (Anderson, Ellis, Carter, etc), Reminder only unrestricted free agents count toward comp picks (not trades, or player that wer cut by their previous team.

Technically the draft is 8 rounds, becasue the NFL hands out exactly 32 comp picks each year. the highest picks are at the end of the 3rd round. If the NFL formula dictates that less than 32 comp picks should be awarded, the remaining picks (of the 32) are issued to the teams that have the worst records as if they were beginning an 8th round of the draft.

If you look at last years draft the NFL issued 22 comp picks and then the last ten picks in the draft are to the teams with the ten worst records.

Bottomline, no comp picks this year, for next year you have to kinda do a balance sheet:

lost BJGE, Anderson
signed 10 JAGS, I think that the ten JAGS will most likely cancel out BJGE and Anderson because the formula relies heavily on the money paid to the UFA that you lost, and neither got any serious cash.

re-signing your own UFA, has no bearing on the comp pick calculations..

Word of comp picks is leaking out now on twitter. Per Bedard we did not receive any this year.

It's not that simple. Any UFA who signs a vet-minimum contract doesn't count against you, and a player who signs a big enough contract to count has to reach free agency as the result of an expiring contract or unpaid option bonus. Players who are released don't count in the equation as a loss for the team that cuts them or a gain for the team that signs them (this is how the Pats were able to go on a FA binge a few years ago and still get comp picks—nearly every player they picked up was one that had been released).

No compensatory picks for Pats

The Patriots did not receive any compensatory draft choices this year, meaning they enter April's draft with six selections.

The breakdown:

First round (own selection)
First round (Saints selection)
Second round (own selection)
Second round (Raiders selection)
Third round (own selection)
Fourth round (own selection)

NOTES: Original fifth-round selection traded to Cincinnati in Chad Ochocinco deal ... original sixth-round selection traded to Philadelphia for Tracy White ... original seventh round selection traded to Kansas City for Jarrad Page ... seventh-round selection acquired in Tracy White deal traded to Minnesota in Randy Moss deal.

There will be no compensatory picks in 2012.
There will be none in 2013 either.

While it's a really complex eligibility process, taking into account only unrestricted free agents who completed their contract, during a specific window, the primary factor is number of eligible UFA's lost minus number of eligible UFA's gained. Only after that is net loss counted up. The Pats have signed 11 UFA's - someone can figure out how many are eligible - and lost 2. They are way off from gaining a compensatory pick.

I would have to assume Belichick hates them anyway. You can't trade them. You're forced to make the picks, even the ones in the sixth round. And who of any value have they ever picked up anyway with those stupid compensatory picks?

Here are all the Pat's compensatory selections since 05. I mean, yeah they haven't gotten much from them but its not for lack of trying.

Well, being relatively low picks, we've picked some valuable players. Deaderick ended last season as a starter, Pryor can be a part of the DL rotation and Kaczur started several seasons at RT, so it's not like all those picks have been thrown to the thrash. Plus, going back some more years, we had a 6th round compensatory selection back in 2000 and it wasn't too bad...

I think the Jets got four picks as compensation for signing LT, Santonio, Plax, and Braylon Edwards.

Thanks, Rog.

They once selected a QB from Michigan with a comp pick ...

I never have understood the rationale for not allowing teams to trade away a compensatory pick.

It is interesting that the Pats used to accumulate them, but not any longer. It's as if Belichick would make some of his acquisitions with comp picks in mind (signing players that had been cut rather than regular free agents, or signing them after June 1), but now he has decided it's not worth considering.

Or perhaps I am reading too much into it and it's just a coincidence.
