Fifth Round

New England ? Cincinnati (PD). New England traded this selection and a sixth-round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft to Cincinnati for wide receiver Chad Ochocinco.

Sixth Round

New England ? Philadelphia (PD). New England traded this selection to Philadelphia for linebacker Tracy White and a seventh-round selection.

Seventh Round

New England ? Minnesota (PD). New England traded this selection and wide receiver Randy Moss to Minnesota for a 2011 third-round selection (No. 74, New England selected Ryan Mallett).

Currently, the New England Patriots do not have draft selections in the 5th, 6th, 7th rounds.

I'm well aware.

Re-read the first line of the 3rd paragraph.

Since I cannot predict trade downs into the 5th, 6th, 7th rounds; I utilized the last two known draft selections available to the New England Patriots in the 2012 NFL Draft.

In retrospect, I'd rather have the 2012 fifth round draft pick instead of Chad Ochocinco on the roster.

I'm certainly not trying to downplay your idea, b/c I think it has a lot of merit.

I'm just telling you that the likelihood of taking 2 'higher' picks (everyone's definition of higher will differ) may be a bit slimmer than we would want it to, coming in a year where there is a perceived lack of talent overall at that particular position.

I think the idea of doubling up is a good one, it increases the likelihood that at least one of them will contribute on a higher level, and also fills a position of need for the current time period and immediate future. I think a lot of your ideas and thoughts are good.

I predict there will either be a run on safeties in either the fourth or fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, due to the perceived lack of talent at the position.

Yeah, that's certainly understandable.

Like I said in my edited post on the last page, I'm just not all that great at choosing specific players. Somewhat due to many unknown variables, and somewhat due to sheer ignorance

I could be wrong, but the pattern certainly points to Belichick having some later picks--despite whatever the current allotment says. For a wheeler and dealer like him, it's hard to imagine him sitting idlely by for the last 3 rounds.

Then again, one could argue that we need top tier talent in a limited number of positions and roster spots available, and that all of our picks should remain in the top 4 rounds. While that sounds good to me, I don't think BB will be buying into it.

The bottom line with the whole draft--is 'who the hell knows?'

But that won't stop us all from speculating for the next 4-5 weeks.

That's a strong possibility too, since the dropoff is so wide.

If the New England Patriots select a wide receiver in the first two rounds of the 2012 NFL Draft, I will definitely puke.

Me too, no doubt.

I would think that possibility is now significantly lessened, due to the recent addition of depth + competition for an already limited amt of spots.

Realistically, how many of the guys brought in do you think can actually be productive here. Branch has clearly declined and I don't know if his body can hold up and if he can be consistent for an entire year. Anthony Gonzalez has 5 catches in the last 3 years, can never stay healthy and needs to learn the system. Donte Stallworth is 31 and has only caught 41 balls since he left here in 2007. Yes he has played with Brady, but how much is that going to help considering it was only 1 season 5 years ago. Ocho clearly didn't work out last year and I don't know how much improvement you could expect this year. And if Underwood or Brit Davis make the team out of camp we have problems. Sure we have a lot of bodies, but competition only helps if you have quality people competing.

Then you add in the fact that Welker is on the Franchise tag and might not stay long term. And Lloyd is a 31 year old problem child who may or may not gel with Brady, even if his skill set does fit the system. So far they have done nothing to change my opinion that WR is a big draft need. Even if someone like Stallworth does work out and Branch plays well this year, then you are going to have big gaps on the roster over the coarse of the next 2 offseasons because all of our WRs are over the age of 30 or have serious injury history. I think now is the perfect time to draft a guy or two, bring them into a training camp with a bunch of veterans to help them learn the system, and hopefully play a season where there isn't a whole lot of pressure as the #3 or #4 WR. We all know that this is a difficult system to learn and it takes time to get on the same page with Brady. So I think we need to draft WR's a year before it becomes a big need and give them time to develop.

Yeah, he's a sleeper because he could be good if he ever gets some instincts. He's got good measurables, but is lacking in the "upstairs" department. Doesn't sound like a Patriot.

Well SOMEONE needs to fill the Merriweather role!

You want realistic, huh?

You want to improve the defense?

2012 NFL Draft - New England Patriots

#27 Devon Still, DT Penn State or Kendall Reyes, DT Connecticut (conversion to 3-4 defensive end)
#31 Trade down
#48 Vinny Curry, DE Marshall (conversion to 3-4 outside linebacker)
#63 Josh Chapman, DT Alabama
#95 Markelle Martin, FS Oklahoma State
#127 Aaron Henry, FS Wisconsin or Brandon Taylor, SS LSU or Shaun Prater, CB Iowa

Additional draft picks from the trade down from #31 overall are gravy.

I would rather not trade down out of the 1st

I predict that will be a run on safeties from the mid first to the mid-third in the 2012 NFL Draft, due to the perceived lack of talent at the position.

Drafting a WR isnt about 2012, its about the future. At this point WR is a big future need

I would not expend a first or second round draft pick on a wide receiver this year considering all the holes in the New England Patriots defense. As for wide receivers, at best select one in the third round and target the best route running prospect in the 2012 NFL Draft - Marvin Jones, WR California.

I hope you are wrong

Me too. Unless it's a very poor team that trades their first rounder with very little chance of being better than a bottom feeder next year.

I want DE,Safety,LB WR with the first 4 picks. What BB wants is a different story all together.

Can someone explain why so many people think we're going to pick a DT early? I thought we were fine there, especially compared to OLB/DE and cover safety.
