This is a good point, and I agree with you about your earlier point re: Moss being a one of a kind convergence of football IQ and natural athletic ability. I don't think even Belichick anticipated the degree to which he would grasp the system.

But to this point - all three of those teams could stretch the field with their passing game. They just didn't have a one dimensional player who was designated for stretching the field. I agree with that.

The reason the Packers, Saints and now Giants have won the last 3 SBs is simply b/c they had more weapons than the team they were playing. The Giants had a better receiving crew, and when we focused on Cruz and Nicks, Manningham beat us for the biggest play of the game.

Now, had Gronk been healthy, maybe we would've had more weapons, and we would've won. Depressing thought, but likely true.

It just comes to this - if you have more weapons on offense than the other team's defense can stop, you're going to win a lot of games in the NFL. The Patriots were one weapon short the last two years. They tried to address it in the offseason last year with Ocho, and it failed. They will try again to address it this year.

Excellent post. Correct in all respects. No way this team can be defended if a safety has to worry about an outside receiver.

I am amazed that no one mentions the fact that the rams are trying resign him and all this conversation increases his contract numbers.

Lloyd is on 1st and Ten (or whatever the Skip Bayless show is called). Talking about Pats. Says excited about the thought. Thinks he can bring consistency to outside the numbers routes.

He is really well spoken. Impressive.

I totally disagree. The general feeling around the league is that Lloyd is going to the Pats. The more he enforces this belief by talking about the Pats, the more likely teams will not show any interest in him because they figure they will be wasting his time. If he wanted to drive up his price, he would be shooting down the fact he is intrigued with following McDaniels back to the Pats and that he is open to play anywhere.

I think he has set it pretty well for the Pats to get him at a bargain because it is unlikely anyone else, including the Rams, will make a seriously aggressive offer to him because they feel that he will likely go to the Pats even if their offer is better than the Patriots. Especially with this being a deep WR free agent class and Lloyd isn't the most prized WR free agent, I think the market is going to be extremely soft for Lloyd and the Pats will get him for a relatively good contract number.

Nice video......BUT the one thing that stuck in my mind was....
HOW MANY of those passes would NEVER have been thrown in NE????

I mean especially in the first half of the video he is often well covered and QBs are just throwing it up in the air (often poorly) into dbl coverage.

I dont see TB doing that (oh shoot then there is that pass to Slater :bricks; nevermind. SIGN THE BEAST.

I think about two-thirds of those passes might have been thrown to Lloyd in New England. And even more thrown where he was more open. Some reminded me of throws to Welker, some reminded me of throws to Moss. I was particularly impressed by his ability to adjust to underthrown balls.

Great highlight video!

I'd love for the Pats to get Lloyd and I agree they seem to be the most likely landing spot. But after 12 years of following the Belichick era here, I have to say there are little alarms going off in my head over how much he's talking about the Patriots to the media. Could be nothing, probably is, just seems an unusual way to go about things.

Watch Moss highlights from 2007, Brady used to heave the ball up and let Moss go get it all the time. Obviously Lloyd is no Moss, but it seems like Brady will force tighter passes with WRs that he trusts more. If Lloyd can prove that he can compete for a ball in tight coverage, Brady will throw to him

Call me crazy but here is how I see it all playing out.......looks pretty good to me:

Welker
Lloyd
Edelman
Branch
Moss
rookie
slater

Slater stays because he is teams and back up for WR & DB.
Branch gets healthy and sticks for another year, although another rookie or unnamed FA could take his spot.
Randy returns for a reasonable, incentive laden attitude guaranteed deal.

Lloyd has been my second choice among the available WRs this year, and that's still the case. I think people should look at him as more Gaffney than Moss, though. He'll help with the middle-deep problem, but he's not going to start demanding all sorts of exotic defensive coverages.

moss is not coming back to the pats, the pats have moved on and at this point randy has 2.. lloyd wil be a pretty damn good fit tho

sorry Rob...but you have a LONG way to go to get into the stratospheric level of know-it-all-ness and long winded righteous pomposity that this dude exhibits on a daily basis...besides, I find I agree with you on most topics, somewhere in the 90 percentile...no, I'm not going to cast aspersions in particular just yet...let's see where these other two topics of interest end up...

I am deeply offended

I could string TEN of your posts together and not approximate the blowhardness of ONE of this clown's "treatises"...besides...us old guys gotta stick together...attrition is a b!tch

I don't know, it worked for Chad last season...and we had to actually trade to accommodate his wishes and then we extended him...

Drop Moss and you are right on target.

I don't see Moss coming back.

I think a wild card is Eddie Royal. The guy has the potential be the next Deion Branch in the Pats' system. He did fairly well in 2010 under McDaniels and also is a returner. Another guy with a very low learning curve for the Pats' offense. If he is signed, Edelman could be cut.

For that matter, Ted Ginn Jr. could be a potential target if Belichick is looking to upgrade the return game.

He was actually talking about "finalizing the deal" and "imagining himself here." The Patriots would have to screw up pretty badly to let this fall through.

Ted Ginn's eyes and his hands reside in different area codes

This is the very definition of a no brainer. A guy who knows the system, would mollify the biggest weakness on offense, and who really, really wants to play for your team.

If there's a downside, I'm sure not seeing it.
