No trades allowed in the NFL past the trading deadline which was in October. Trades can't happen again before the start of the new league year on March 13. If they don't pick up the bonus he is a UFA on March 8th. You can't trade a player who isn't under contract to you any longer.
But the bonus is before the trade deadline, so they would have to pay it and eat it, it doesnt transfer with trade.
Uner this scenario, Manning forfeits leverage. All of the IFs you add in are extremely uncertain.
Pushing back the bonus to find out there is no trade market for his contract and health would end up costing him dearly.
No, not if there were language guaranteeing him the bonus were he to defer the date and then there was NO acceptable trade to a team Peyton had specified.
Mo - By your own admission, the date that the payment is made can be moved if Manning agrees to it. Thereby, Manning can agree to move it so that it's not paid until after a trade is consummated, but before Free Agency. It's doubtful that Manning would see that sort of money otherwise. Especially considering his health issues..
The problem with that is that the Colts would be hurting themselves: you can only renegotiate a contract once in a twelve-month period. So if they renegotiate with Manning to move that bonus to, say, May 1, whichever team that trades for him would be stuck paying that bonus, and would have no way around it. That would drastically lower the picks they'd get in return.
Not sure what you mean there; he can't be traded before FA starts.
Manning is going to be 36 years old in March and is coming off of multiple neck surgeries.
If I were the Colts owner, I'd definitely be drafting a QB with the #1 pick.
I think Manning's trade value for the Colts will actually improve if he plays with the Colts next year. He is still an unknown in regards to health. I can't see any team taking a chance with that salary and trading away draft picks not knowing how well he will hold up. Of course that means Irsay will have to pay him this year.....
What if they can't work out a trade to a team Manning wants to go to? It not a lock that teams would give up much of anything to take on that contract and health issue.Move the bonus date to say 2 weeks after FA.
Manning gets traded before then to a new team who pays his new contract which includes the new team paying the bonus money (or the colts have agreed to pay some portion, whatever, infinite permutations).
OR
Manning is not traded so the Colts pay him the bonus money, trade the pick for megabucks rebuilding on the fly or draft Luck and have two QBs. The new CBA makes Luck affordable cap wise.

post #66 that you are responding to gave one answer to that question
OR...
What do you propose Manning accomplishes by agreeing to let them not pay him and also not get free agency?
I have no idea. That was not what I was posting about.
Archie Manning tells YSR's @CNotesbyCraig he isn't sure if Peyton will B able 2 play in @NFL next season & "we'll just have 2 wait & see."
