2011 Draft makes a lot more sense now

fair enough I still would have taken Brooks Reed BB misses a lot in 2nd round. He does gr8 in 3rd and 5 right??? very good in 1st

I really viewed Reed as Best on board when we were up

I feel he hits much better than u credit him w/.

Take a look at all the college 4-3 DE's that were projected to be 3-4 OLB's in the pros drafted in the first two rounds over the past 4 drafts. Now handicap the ones that have done great, well, OK, not so good, gone.

I have heard people say BB doesn't care about OLB's. Ha. From 2001-2011 his two biggest FA purchases were OLB's. BB sees the failure rate in these players, then he saw the short camp this year, and said to himself:

We need a LT, the RB's in FA this year suck, so since RB is the easiest position to learn I'll draft two of them instead of blowing money on vets like Taylor. He saw a 2nd round talent slip due to health concerns and scooped him. He had a pass catching TE, and an all around monster TE, so he picked up and bone crunching blocker TE. BB sees that he'll be in nickel more often then not, and our CB's are basically smurfs, lets get a long one.

I mean WTH people? BB might not have the best drafting record, but tossing in trades, FA and UDFA pick-ups and then judge. We have to be top 5, if not top 3 since 2001. Oh yeah, toss in letting guys walk at the right time - Samuel is the only questionable choice. Look at the rest of them.

I like Brooks a lot too and had him on my mock, but guess what, BB doesn't draft him, I don't care what Eddie Munster and his acloyets think, and I'm not the least bit upset. After all most of the Patriot fan angst on draft picks is having expectations tweaked, and then assuming what they read and see MUST be right.

Right now BB is cornering the market on DL's. He'll keep the best and any cast offs won't have much time to figure anything out with another team. Seems wise to me. He's going to unleash a defense that will sow consternation in almost all their foes, and if the offense does it's part, the D may average being on the field ~24.5 minutes per game. A very nice scenario for an attacking defense with an aging DL IMO.

Reed was a garbage prospect for the Pats' 3-4 scheme. All burst, no pass rushing moves. He wasn't even the best pass rusher on his college team.

I think you may have misunderstood what's being discussed.

I was replying to these remarks specifically:

Like he "knew" Burgess was capable? Or like he "knew" that Lewis would work at tight end? BB doesn't "Know" about veterans at the end of the line. He takes a volume approach to filling in positions of need, as we've seen here pretty much every single year. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.

If that's not germane to what you wrote, then whatever.

My point in that post was pretty clear, or so I thought. It wasn't about specific players, or just about players who haven't worked out, but was about the way BB approaches this. We're seeing it this year on the DL. As I noted in the post you just quoted, Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.

Right. And I was just citing someone who didn't work out. No point beyond that, really.

Actually, the reason I thought of him in the first place was I thought that's who you meant to write when you wrote Lewis.

Ahhh... got it. I didn't figure out where you were going with it, because I was focused more on the concept than the players themselves (as evidenced by the Lewis/Smith screw up). Sorry about that.
