The Jets are reportedly only offering Shaun Ellis a one-year contract. Ellis looked very good against the Pats last year. I can see him doing well in either a 4-3 or 3-4. Seems to me this would be a great opportunity for the Pats to offer him something better without breaking the bank or hurting their cap position, while improving the defense - and at the same time inflicting a blow to a rival playoff contender that they will face twice this season.

It is being reported that Jerricho Cotchery has been informed he's a goner if Derrick Mason passes his physical with the Jets.

I can't see any room for Cotchery on the Pats' roster, but who knows? The Pats supposedly offered Randy Moss a contract even after they had acquired Chad Ochocinco.

Not sure what he did as a rookie. I would definitely take a look.
He is that versatile DE/OLB type. 6-4, 255, 4.7 speed.
Not a huge sack guy.
Only a fifth-round pick. Had a college ACL repair.
Obviously as a cheap second-year player from the fifth round, he probably wasn't released for cost, so it doesn't speak well.
Not sure of the rules on game-day activation and so forth under the new CBA, but he might be PS eligible.
Definitely a third-tier DE/OLB, but if the Patriots are looking at other used cars like Quentin Moses and Matt Roth, he could be considered.
You would hope for Pierre Woods type role from him.

Anyone think we should put in a claim for this guy?

A decent amount of people on the board, including myself, liked him as a speed rusher off the weakside coming out of the draft as a 3rd rounder or so.

He left camp (without giving a reason) and was cut when he returned the next day. He's had some knee problems in the past, but I wouldn't mind taking a shot on this 24 year old with our poor depth at OLB/DE.

Give him a shot in camp to see what he can do as a pass rusher. We are severely lacking in that area. Not a high risk move financially.

I was under the impression doctors botched his knee surgery when he was still in college (Auburn?), and his skills have unfortunately never been remotely close since then.
