RFA Question

Hey guys, did anyone catch the rules for Restricted Free Agents in the new CBA.

Do the restricted tags placed at the end of last year still applicable? (meaning is draft pick compensation still owed to team if anyone signs their restricted free agents)

Can team place restricted tags going forward?

Any info would be greatly helpful, Thanks!

The tags placed remain in place if they are still applicable under the new CBA. In other words, only players with less than 4 years service - like it used to be. Players with 4-5 years who were RFA tendered are now UFA. The salary numbers may be recalculated. Franchise tags placed in March also remain in effect. The way the tag numbers are calculated will change to a % of cap formula, but I believe not until 2012.

One other question: some teams opted not to use the franchise tag back in February because they wanted to wait and see what would happen with CBA negotiations. I'm assuming there is no new window of opportunity for teams to franchise a player - i.e., that March 4 deadline to franchise a player remains the same - right?

No new windows. Anyone who was a UFA when the CBA expired is now a UFA. Teams have no exclusive window to sign their own UFA either. They can talk to any UFA beginning tomorrow at 10AM and they can sign any UFA beginning Friday (although those players will be limited to off field activities until the CBA is ratified and the new league year begins).

Tags remain in place for all tagged players and RFA tenders remain only for those with less than 4 years. The 4-5 year players are UFA.

is a franchised player. He must play for us or nowhere. The fanchise amount may have been changed by the new CBA (or do changes take effect in 2012).

My understanding is that another team can still sign BJGE but the Pats have the right of first refusal; if he signs elsewhere the Pats get a 2nd round pick. Similarly another team could sign Mankins but again the Pats have the right of first refusal; if he goes to another team they get two first round picks for him.

One more thing with Mankins: the Pats have until September 20 to sign him to a long term deal. After that they have to wait till start of new NFL year - i.e., next March, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Correct. But no team is going to do either of those, so they're both basically stuck here.
