Interesting to notice that 4 of the bottom 5 teams did not make the playoffs in 2010
Key to continuity and a playoff run is to have a good amount of players from the previous season back together for another consecutive year.
Things like this show you why there are several new playoff entrants each year as teams that keep their roster intact almost always improve.
I would bet that 1 or 2 of those bottom 4 non playoff teams will make the playoffs in 2011....IF there is a 2011 season.
These lists can be misleading. A team can have a ton of free agents, but only a small handful being impact players of any capacity. Of the Pats' 11 free agents, I think three are starters (Mankins, BJGE, and Light.... and I guess Kyle Arrington although he will likely be a back up in 2011 with the return of Bodden) and maybe one or two more are strong role players.
The Jets, for example since I am aware of their free agent situation more than most other teams with a lot of free agents) have a lot of starter/impact free agents (Harris, Holmes, Edwards, Cromartie, Ellis,Brodney Pool (became a starter towards the end of the end of year when Leonard went down), Nick Folk, Steve Weatherford, Brad Smith, Eric Smith, and Tony Richardson. In fact, they currently only have one safety currently on their roster who isn't a free agent and he had a season ending injury. Two of their top three CBs (Cromartie and Coleman) are free agents. Their top back up at tackle (Wayne Hunter) is a free agent.
And Benny will be a RFA at worst even under a new CBA. I think Arrington is a ERFA so he won't cost but minimum salary to retain.
Yes, that is true. Also, I think Light will be resigned on the cheap since his age will not make him in high demand for a big salary and he likes it here. The only significant free agent the Pats have to resign who will make a big salary and signficantly affect the cap is probably Mankins.
I wouldn't be shocked if Light got a pretty decent offer somewhere else. He's got at least two or three years in him, he brings some attitude and experience to an offensive line, he's better than half the lineman out there, and there aren't any obvious impact rookie left tackles. A team like the Lions would be very smart to pick him up.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Light may prefer to stay in New England than go to Detroit. Not that he's going to sign for the minimum. But I can see $9 mil over 2 years - same as his salary for 2010.
