The Saints lead the pack. I wonder if Pherein can shed some light on that one.

The Packers are pretty low as well, and the Jest aren't quite as high up as I thought they'd be (mostly because a few teams have some serious holes).

The Jets are 17, thought there were more???

Interesting to notice that 4 of the bottom 5 teams did not make the playoffs in 2010

Key to continuity and a playoff run is to have a good amount of players from the previous season back together for another consecutive year.

Things like this show you why there are several new playoff entrants each year as teams that keep their roster intact almost always improve.

I would bet that 1 or 2 of those bottom 4 non playoff teams will make the playoffs in 2011....IF there is a 2011 season.

17 is plenty, particularly when you consider (a) it includes four high quality starters in their prime (Edwards/Cro/Harris/Holmes), two other starters (Ellis, Pool), their fourth wideout/special teams star, their nickel back, their third and fourth safeties, and their only experienced o-line reserve, (b) they're at 120 million or more and the only cap "deadwood" to clear is Jenkins, Thomas and Woody (they _might_ be able to get Sanchez to restructure), and (c) they have a thin team to begin with.

JETSCAP lists 18. Their problem is that a # of them are starters in line for big time contracts and they don't have the draft picks to even begin replacing them and they have a lot of $$$ committed to the remainder of the roster for 2011 before even factoring in how to fill the voids under a return to a cap.

This listing doesn't give you much to go on absent the names of the players and some sense of their value (contractually or as starters or significant contributors). Some teams are in the process of rebuilding, like Seattle, and looking to replace lots of guys because of scheme fit. They are clearing cap space via attrition. And they have the personally deepest pocketed owner in the league in Paul Allen to fill in their gaps via FA.

These lists can be misleading. A team can have a ton of free agents, but only a small handful being impact players of any capacity. Of the Pats' 11 free agents, I think three are starters (Mankins, BJGE, and Light.... and I guess Kyle Arrington although he will likely be a back up in 2011 with the return of Bodden) and maybe one or two more are strong role players.

The Jets, for example since I am aware of their free agent situation more than most other teams with a lot of free agents) have a lot of starter/impact free agents (Harris, Holmes, Edwards, Cromartie, Ellis,Brodney Pool (became a starter towards the end of the end of year when Leonard went down), Nick Folk, Steve Weatherford, Brad Smith, Eric Smith, and Tony Richardson. In fact, they currently only have one safety currently on their roster who isn't a free agent and he had a season ending injury. Two of their top three CBs (Cromartie and Coleman) are free agents. Their top back up at tackle (Wayne Hunter) is a free agent.

The list is for 2011 FA, not 2010 so not sure how it would have anything to do with what transpired in 2010... And not sure it helps the non playoff cause in 2011 to return with MOTS... Buffalo is at least getting new unis... Denver and Miami are QB'less messes. And the farther Jerry gets from his Tuna salad days the worse it seems to get for America's team...

The average roster sees about a 15-20% turnover per season for a variety of reasons (age, injury, performance, cost, opportunity). Like Bill says, if you're not getting better in this league you're getting worse. For every youngster who improves there's one who regresses or a veteran who starts to lose ground.

And Benny will be a RFA at worst even under a new CBA. I think Arrington is a ERFA so he won't cost but minimum salary to retain.

The number of Fa's is a small part of the story. The rest of the story is who those FA's are and what will they demand.

I think the Jets are in the most perilous position when you take that into account.

Yes, that is true. Also, I think Light will be resigned on the cheap since his age will not make him in high demand for a big salary and he likes it here. The only significant free agent the Pats have to resign who will make a big salary and signficantly affect the cap is probably Mankins.

I wouldn't be shocked if Light got a pretty decent offer somewhere else. He's got at least two or three years in him, he brings some attitude and experience to an offensive line, he's better than half the lineman out there, and there aren't any obvious impact rookie left tackles. A team like the Lions would be very smart to pick him up.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Light may prefer to stay in New England than go to Detroit. Not that he's going to sign for the minimum. But I can see $9 mil over 2 years - same as his salary for 2010.

I see Light finishing his career in NE. Though, Detroit is just a couple of leaders away from being a really decent team.
