Schefter: Logan Mankins to report, sign tender on Tuesday

Logan will make a good back up to Connolly.

I wouldn't expect Mankins to start right away. He will need several weeks to get into game shape.

Re: Logan Mankins signs tender

Cant we get that guy Moss instead

I know, really. I'm trying to imagine this offense with a guy like Moss lined up opposite of Welker.

Re: Logan Mankins signs tender

Sorry, I counted Kaczur who is on IR. Same answer though, I think Ojinnaka goes.

Koppen, Wendell, Connolly, Light, Vollmer, LeVoir, Ohrnberger, Ojinnaka, Neal.

That's 9. Mankins would make 10. Ohrnberger is the one likely to cut unless the Pats feel that Mankins can move out to RT if needed. Ojinnaka is a guard/tackle combo and brings more versatility than Ohrnberger.

That being said, the Pats could like what Maneri has been doing on the PS and could be fine with cutting Ojinnaka.

They could also IR Taylor, though that would thin out the backfield to 3 RBs and I'm not sure BB is comfortable with that long term.

My gut tells me BB is playing cat-n-mouse with Fred Taylor. I believe he is legitimately hurt but also believe that he could play if he had to. No need to put more miles on those tires when it looks like the team will need a solid running game for meaningful games in January!!

Re: Mankins to report tomorrow

Just saw that. Says he can officially play as early as sunday! WOOOO

I am not sure if that is a good thing.

He obviously does not want to be here.

Will he disrupt the team chemistry?

I don't see it. Players seem to say nothing but great things about him and BB is as good as there is when it comes to separating football game planning from business matters. This is a win on all fronts.

Yeah, I've had the same thought. The guy is SO injury prone, but he's a good back when he's healthy. I think they'll baby him to the extent they can, and bring him back into the mix in December.

On Mankins, anyone who's feeling bitter about the guy has to snap out of it. Stuff happens. The fact he's coming back is nothing but good, particularly because it's earlier than we thought.

It seems to me that reporting now rather than waiting until the last minute is his way of stating clearly that he DOES want to be here.

And as others have said, Mankins has always had the reputation of a good teammate, a stand-up guy, a hard worker and a downright nasty player on the field. Some players I'd be scared about in this kind of situation, but Mankins not so much.

Re: Mankins to report tomorrow

I for one am glad to see the team improved as it is by Logan's return. It likely will take a couple weeks for him to regain football shape and timing. Signals have probably changed somewhat as well. Expect to see him play post Cleveland game. If he returns to form as I expect, I anticipate an even better running game.

Re: Mankins to report tomorrow

One possible impact of the Moss saga is the influence it may have had on Mankins to appreciate what he's got a little more and return early instead of holding out to the bitter end. Will be interesting to see what becomes of his longer term contract negotiation with the Pats in light of Randy's experience.

Maybe Randy was on the phone with him telling him he was making a huge mistake. Maybe the Pats had Deion lob in a call as well!

curious to see what will happens with his return...will he play ? will he not play ?

I forgot to mention this earlier, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Pats and Mankins announce a long term deal instead of just the tender.

This. But I think it will be a few days in the works. Similar to how Marcus McNeill signed his tender with the Chargers and then inked a 6 year $48.895 Million dollar deal a few days later.

I think it will probably be for 5 years and in the $35 million range.

That's what I thought when his return was announced earlier than week 10. I'm hoping a long-term deal is imminent and that's why he's coming in now.

This would:

a.) Make a happy camper, and makes me more confident about the Indy game because watching MNF last night, Freeney's still got it.

b.) Make OG much less of a priority in the draft. Would still like to snag one OG/OC to groom as Koppen's replacement, though.

With regard to the discussion as to who gets cut, I believe that the Patriots will be able to ask for a roster exception for a few weeks so that Logan can practice and nobody will have to be cut, at least until he is ready to play.

Note to Logan:

OK. You did what you felt you had to do in your own economic interests. I can't argue with that. An NFL player has a short career span (average of 3.5 years) and the most talented, like yourself, have every right to maximize their earnings during the short time they play.

So, welcome back. Business is business.

I hope you can ignore those who are ripping you. But, at the same time, don't expect a lot of love from those of us who support you. You set the terms; it's nothing personal...just business.

I do, though, hope that you show up in playing condition because that is what you're being paid for and the Pats could use you.

PFS74

He can't be in "playing condition" without having played in 10 months. He may not even be in decent physical condition.

He may not even want to play, just punching his clock to toll another year in case he needs it to be a FA. He may feel he has nothing to lose. He gets 200K per week by showing up whether he plays or not. If he tells BB that he just wants to collect the money, what can they do? Cut him?

And I don't think the Pats want to play 8M per year to a guard. Good for them, it's a waste of money.

I just want BB to do whatever is right for the existing team. If that is to bench him, bench him. If that is to play him, fine do it.

I suspect the best thing for the team will be to bench him but I am not BB and I hardly have his information or insight. Still, his return to the team at this time indicates an existing attitude problem. It is poison to allow someone onto the team who does not have an appropriate attitude. I don't want anyone to be vindictive with him and bench him for past events, but if the disease still exists, I'd say he has to be benched. His skills won't help the team if he isn't checked in.

If Neal retires end of the season and Mankins does stay, I wonder if Connolly could play right guard?

I don't follow this. I would think that a return earlier than is required to earn his accrued year would indicate exactly the opposite?
