Bill Belichick is simply way ahead of the curve...

I was very upset for a day or two after Moss was traded. Then we got Deion and I felt alot better and the whole thing started to make a bit more sense. Now it makes a ton more sense.

Belichick is pure genius. Here's why.

{{ fade to 4 weeks ago.... in BB's office }}

Randy Moss: Coach, you wanted to see me?

Belichick: Yeah... Hey Randy. I'm kinda ****ing bored around here so I'm gonna stir some sh!t up okay.....

RM: Okay, Coach.... What do I do.

BB: Well, I'm tired of yoking the Raiders so I'm thinking of d!cking with that jagoff Childress. Here's what we're gonna do. I'm gonna trade you to the Vikes for a 3rd.

RM: Wait.... Coach..... WHAT????

BB: Shut up...... Hear me out. I'll trade you there, then you act like a jerk for a few weeks and he'll panic and dump you on the WW. Then stomp your feet around and refuse to play for anyone else and we'll pick you up off the wire. You'll be back here before Thanksgiving and we'll be a 3rd rounder richer.

RM I'm on it Coach.

BB: Good boy

I don't think anyone is way ahead of anyone in the NFL, but in a game of inches, our guy does seem to be at least a few yards ahead everyone else, and a few weeks ahead of Chilly.

Regarding talent evaluation, I think a few bad years shouldn't be enough to discredit a long track record of success. No doubt, he made some mistakes over the years, and from 2006 to 2008, he missed on a lot of picks. But he also learned from it, rebounded to have a very solid 2009 draft class, and absolutely nailed the 2010 draft while loading up for 2011.

It's one thing to say he made mistakes. It's another to hold those against him forever, especially if he has improved in that area dramatically.

I also wonder about how his draft decision-making changed between that period. From 2006 to 2008, there were some very unusual decisions compared to the rest of BB's drafts. Like taking a RB in the first round when he never spent higher than a third at the position. Or taking a big-armed raw-talent QB like KOC. Not spending a top-3 pick on an OL or DL throughout that 3-year period. I know Josh was working out some prospects personally (like KOC).

I'm not trying to take blame away, as ultimately BB is responsible for everything that goes on. But it's clear there were some differences in philosophy during these 3 years, and it's just as clear that whatever the issues were, they've been resolved.

You want to know the biggest difference between Belichick and every other coach in the game?

H U E V O S G R A N D E S !

All the chicken littles - including myself to some extent and virtually everyone outside of NE - were baffled by Bill's decision to let Randy go for "just" a 3rd. Right now that trade is looking like highway robbery. Another downright Machiavellian personnel maneuver by Bill Belichick. There isn't a single other HC/GM in the NFL who is capable of consistently making these moves. No one.

When Belichick traded Moss away I said that he hadn't done anything that stupid since trading Lawyer Milloy in 2003... I seem to recall that "crazy" move worked out pretty well too

Tom Jackson is still convinced the team hates Belichick

Another key to Belichick is his almost preternatural organization and focus. Every day of the year, he is able to zero in on the task at hand--from the off-season, to the draft, preseason, whatever.

So each week when he says, "we're just thinking about X" what the media doesn't get is that he means that's what he's thinking about. It's an amazing talent.

Just a nitpick, but Milloy was released, not traded.

a bit of hyperbole i'm afraid. Before the trade, i thought moss's play had declined significantly, and i said here that he was no longer an elite receiver. You don't have to be a genius to see the decline in his productivity, and i suspect lots of nfl people saw what bb saw..

Funny stuff, but yoking the Raiders? Moss for a 4th was good. Burgess for a 3rd and 5th was not. Gabriel for a 5th was not. Seymour for a 1st, while I have no problem with, isn't looking today like some big steal with the Raiders at 4-4. I think the myth that BB has continuously fleeced the Raiders is a little silly.

No longer true about Tom Jackson....As of late,he's been very complimentary of the Pats and of Belichick,in particular. For all of BB's alleged grievances with sportwriters, players and pundits,he's the one guy who seems to be able to separate the myriad emotions of today's Sports World, from what it is.......As the Godfather said:

"It's just business"....may we all be so,prescient.:rocker:

Speaking of Deion, I'm sure his return played a part in this also. How humbled Branch was coming back to the Pats, and how happy he was in his return. There's no doubt in my mind that that stuck with Randy.

+1

We got the guy for a fourth and traded him for a likely top five third round pick. In the meantime his play had deteriorated badly.

Seemed like a smart business move to me.

Not to mention the obvious distraction potential.
