Rex Ryan's pedigree

Rex has the following going for him:

  • Honeymoon period for a new coach
  • Brash talker -- this is popular as long as they're winning
  • Caught a few breaks to make the playoffs
  • Exceeded initial low expectations for a team led by a rookie QB

As the expectations start to catch up, Rex's abilities to manage the X's and O's will start to come more into focus. Some of his deficiencies, if any, may be offset if Sanchez matures into a better player as well.

Your whole premise of the thread was wrong. Anyway, Jets reached a 2 year extension with Coach Ryan. Best defense in the league is here to stay! From Jay Glazer's twitter:
Breaking news: I am reporting that the jets today signed head coach rex ryan to a 2 year extension.

If they were the "Best Defense," how did they finish with a 9-7 record and a 4-4 record at home???? Oh wait. I know. It's because their offense was mediocre and it's gotten worse with the loss of Faneca and Thomas Jones.

At least his defenses put pressure on the QB. We give them all day to throw...it's the bend but don't break also known as "let them have 10 yard completions all day until they score a TD" defense.

My premise was that he lacked a background that would lead you to believe he will be a success.
That was true then and is true now. The fact that he took over a 9-7 team and went 7-7 plus gift doesnt indicate his ability exceeds his resume either.
I am very happy that the Jets extneded the contact of another coach who wont win there.

If the Colts don't say screw it lets go home, the OP would have been right about year 1. I'm not trying to bash the Jets, but until they consistently stay in the playoffs I'll beleive in them. So far under Rex Ryan they snuck into the playoffs and went on a miracle run at 9-7. Wooohoo, someone get this man to canton fast! Again, 9-7 with a roster that has spent how much in FA aquisitions over the years? Rex Ryan didn't build that team, he's merely running it and so far they're a 9-7 team. Almost winning the title game doesn't mean a damn thing.

So honestly until his fat ass does win a super bowl (if he dosen't have a heart attack first) I guess he will be kissing Bill's ring until than. Maybe KRaft can save some money, fire the maintenance crew that keeps the lombardi's shiney and we can let Ryan do that? It might be the closest he gets to holding his own.

don't argue with any Jets fans. Remember, these are the same people that came up with the eternal phrase "Mangenious"

So your vote is that Rex Ryan knows more about defense than Bill Belichick?

The Patriots have won the division, or had the same record as the division winner, every year since 2001. The defense has been top 10 in scoring in each of the past 4 years, and top 5 in 3 of those 4, and have only finished out of the top 10 in scoring twice since 2001 (2002 and 2005).

I think it's safe to say that your argument sucks.

You do realize that we allowed the 7th fewest pass completions in the NFL last season, right?

For some reason Rex Ryan is being considered some type of coaching genius. Many people think his presence makes the Jets defense great.
Rather than a first year coach, and more than a guy like Mangini who learned at the feet of the master, this blowhard is being annointed not only competant (which he may not even be) but good.
Why?
His father was a coach, so that must make him good? But his father was a poor or medicore at best coach.
He came from the great Raven defense system. Umm, he was 3rd in line as DC, and the least successful of the 3. (The Ravens averaged worst than 9-7 in his 4 years as DC)
His predecessors Marvin Lewis and Mike Nolan, not only ran better defenses in Baltimore, but have failed in their HC jobs, including both having poor defenses.
Ryan is a disciple of Brian Billick who underachieved with the Ravens and ended up fired after 2 losing seasons in 3.
I don't get it. But it seems the aggressive, "I'm a jerk, don't you like me? approacjh he is taking is a good shield to the fact that this guy probably was a terrible hire who isnlt equipped to be a HC.
If the Jets are an 8-8 team (which I think they are) with an average coach, they could be in for a run of 3-13 to 5-11 years before they realize this buffoon was a mistake.

the only pedigree he has consists of donuts and hamburgers

Buddy's "46" overload weakside Blitz led to League Dominance for at least a season and a half, before the League's OCs caught up with it. Walsh showed how and that was that for the "46" and Buddy.

Buddy undercoached a very talented
Eagles team to zero (0) playoff victories and was responsible for Randall Cunningham's late development as a QB, refusing to hire a QB coach and essentially telling him "run first, then pass" when he had the potential to be better with a minimum of coaching. But that was Buddy with little regard for the offense.

My objective opinion of Rex is that he's mostly a motivator, as someone else pointed out. His players really seem to like him, but you have to wonder how that will hold up if things don't go well.

I don't know much about his scheme, but it looked pretty effective last year. It definitely helps that Mangini seems to have built a solid, young foundation for the Jets to build on.

I actually don't like many of their offseason moves, even from an objective standpoint. It doesn't make sense to blow up a locker room that, at least from my perspective, appeared to gel in a way that most teams only dream of. I believe that's why they were able to win in the playoffs. Now that seems a question mark for the Jets.

That's it in a nutshell. But it's not a unique turn of events for the Greenbeans. Herm was mostly motivator and Mangneius was mostly scheme. Each had flashes of success they could not parlay into more than 3-4 seasons of employment with Woody. Rex won't be any different because his tenure won't be any different. Last season this halfwit told everyone his team was mathmatically eliminated when they were not. His veterans fought back and won out (courtesy of a pair of teams choosing to lay down and rest on their way to the playoffs). They faced the same team in the first round and that team is who we think they are, still the same old Bungles. Then they faced a Chargers team that remains the inigma of the AFCW - not to mention playoff football. Then the ride was over because all along they had benefitted from circumstances beyond their control. They got to the AFCC in Rex and Sanchise's rookie seasons not because they earned it but because of favorable circumstances. Kind of like the way the Dolphins squeaked out the division in 2008...not because of Tuna or Sparano but Brady was lost to us for an entire season.
