The Jets suck (merged)

Should have known better than to post an article which requires a glass half full view to appreciate.

Wrecksorcism,

I appreciate that you tried to be serious and were insulted for it. But Sanchez is being Deified by the New York media machine when he has done scant little to deserve it.

Yes, I agree he will likely be a better, more mature QB in his sophomore season than he was as an under-experienced college player, and rookie. But sophomore QBs are hardly ready to lead Super bowl Clubs by donning the weight of the World, as Atlas did.

If we believed that Jabba Wrecks could replicate last year's ground game that protected Sanchez; and the lucky breaks would break that way again, he might well earn a winning 9-7 record or so this time. But that also assumes that all out Blitzes once filmed, analyzed and counters plotted, will work as good as when novel and unexpected, is somewhat more than wishful thinking, I believe.

But Jabba has personally Wrecked the Jets running game, even before injuries, by discarding Faneca, jettisoning Jones and dumping Washington, all without having an adequate replacement on hand for any of them, but only raw hopes. So Sanchez will not be able to hide as he was as a rookie.

He will be exposed and taught the hard lessons of being an NFL QB and the Jets will descend to what a team with a sophomore QB usually wins, 4-6 victories.

So, the rookie QB was not only full of suck, he was stupid and couldn't learn more than half of what was required.

That bodes well for the Jets sucking in the future.
I like this post Deus Irae. I like it a lot.

This really gets to the heart of the matter.

It's an immutable law of nature. Just as it's cold in the winter and warm in the summer, light during the day and dark at night. There's no room for debate or equivocation.

The jets suck, have always sucked and will always suck. There's simply no point in debating a universal truth.

What I can't understand is why that team has fans. They suck too, I guess.

well..they are today's ultimate example of P.T. Barnum's axiom...

"there's a sucker born every minute.."

Hey..how's everyone been? Can't believe this thread has almost 1050 responses. Fun Fact: Mark Sanchez's rookie season was better than Brady's rookie season. What's that? Tom Brady didn't play as a rookie? I forgot 'bout that.

But on a serious note..I have a question for all the Patriots fans who happen to read this question:

What expectations were you expecting Mark Sanchez to have as a rookie last season?

I hear all the bashing...but seriously; how good did the Patriots fans expect him to be? How well was he supposed to perform last season? And please people...I would like real answers and not just throwaway statements such as "I expected him to be better than he was last season."

I thought he should have stayed in college for another season. Like Carroll, I thought that he needed the time to get ready for the NFL. Once he did decide to go pro, I expected him to suck ass if he played. He didn't let me down.

What's really sad about Sanchez' rookie season is that he had everything go his way and was still terrible. As Jets fans were so fond of pointing out, the Jets had the #1 running game and the #1 defense. Still, even with Ryan protecting Sanchez as if he were a Faberge egg, the kid was still unable to do much of anything right over the course of the season. The Jets, as a team, would have been better off with Sanchez sitting on the bench learning the game. A freakish run to end the season doesn't change that.

On the positive side for the Jets, they were able to keep Sanchez from getting pummeled as a rookie, so he should be able to avoid David Carr syndrome moving forward (Why more teams didn't run stunt blitzes over the Jets' right side is something I'll probably never understand). Now, with a year under his belt, and after the Cinderella playoff run, he can be just the starting QB, without the rest of the nonsense, and maybe he'll know more than half the necessary information.

One last note:

One of the great things about the NFL is that almost every game is of importance. The very first game of the season, vs. the Texans, could have spelled disaster for Sanchez and the Jets. Sanchez could easily have been picked 4-5 times in the game. However, the Texans couldn't make some ridiculously easy defensive plays that would have completely changed that game. That one game was the difference in determining which of those two teams made the playoffs.

I expected Sanchez to suck last season. I wasn't disappointed. I expect him to be a run-of-the-mill QB in the future. Look at Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco's rookie seasons. Hell, Matt Stafford had as good of a rookie year as Sanchez, and he was playing on a much worse team. Sanchez didn't do much better than Josh Freeman, who didn't have much support. Matt Cassel hadn't started a game since high school, stepped in and played well enough to get a giant contract. The list goes on.

What I want to know from you is how you can just assume that Sanchez will only get better. Do you assume this? He was put behind perhaps the best o-line in football, the #1 running game, and the #1 defense. I just don't think that Sanchez is going to be good enough to carry this Jets team even short-term. He's just lost his workhorse RB and perennial Pro Bowl Guard.

The expectations this year for him by some people are ridiculous, if you ask me. We'll have to see how he does when given some real responsibility instead of just being a game manager. I'd rather have Chad Henne, really. I'd be surprised if Sanchez broke the top 20 in QB production this year, and then there will be no more "he's only a rookie" excuses.

The jets suck.

Sanchez is a jet.

Therefore, Sanchez sucks. QED

What shocked me about Sanchez last year was how easily he was confused when teams put pressure on him or put his receivers in tight coverage. I don't know if it is that he has a problem with seeing the field (many people say he is significantly shorter than his listed height) or his inability to think on his feet, but when teams knew he was going to pass and he wasn't making a quick pass he made some of the dumbest decisions I have seen by a QB rookie or not.

The guys has the tools to be a good QB, but I question if he has the mental part to be a great QB. He played well in the QB when the Jets limited his passes and forced teams to be worried about the run on every play (giving few blitzes or pressure and not a lot of double teams on his receivers). The question will be if the changes to the running game hurts the running game and they are forced to win games with Sanchez airing out the ball if he has learned enough not to regress to the Sanchez of the regular season who threw as many passes in the direction opposing defenders at his own receivers in a handfull of games.

Yes, he was a rookie and he may correct his problems and become a very good, great or even elite QB; but he did seriously re-inforce Pete Carroll's words that he left college far too soon. He was not ready for the NFL last year and the Jets' defense and running game hid how obvious that fact was.

I expected him to suck, he did suck, yet somehow Jets fans seem to think he's the 2nd coming. That is where most of the confusion comes from.

Short, concise, and to the point. Good job.

+1.

Jets fans aren't the only ones that think it, too, which makes it more confusing.

I expected about what you got. I mean he was the 2nd worst QB in the NFL, how could the expecatations have been lower than that given that Jamarcus Russell existed in Oakland?
I thought he would struggle unde pressure. He did. I thought his arm strength would be a hinderance to him. It was. I was interested to see if his decision making was going to be as bad as you would think with so little college experience. It was, and here is the problem for Jets fans.
QBs who lack experience do not generally make good decisions. (Some are born to it though) However, QBs do not become good decision maers by gaining experience while making bad decisions. Thats the issue with many, many young QBs who start poorly and never get better. We could list dozens of them from Ryan Leaf and Heath Shuler to Tim Couch and Jamarcus Russell. These are all guys who were far, far more highly thought of than Sanchez could hope to be, and when they struggled out of the gate, continuing to play and gain experience while making poor decisions only embedded the poor decision making in their heads.
I think this is a very critical year for Sanchez. We have documented in this thread that the fallacy of rookie QBs being better in year 2 is not correct. But there is no question that QBs who make poor decisions and continue to play and make more almost never improve. If Sanchez looks in 2010 like the guy who didn't see the obvious pick coming, and the guy who seems to be more aware of the rushers than of what is going on downfield, the chances of him ever becoming an effective QB are slim.

That's the first intelligent thing he's said since being hired for NFLN.

He's the first person I've heard pick the Pats win the East besides Patriots fans.

Someone clearly slipped some LSD in his tea. When has Marshall Faulk ever said anything remotely complimentary or reflected common sense toward the Patriots?

Mind you I have just seen a female ginger non-elected Prime Minister sworn into Australian politics today. I'm well aware I am seeing pigs fly, hell freeze over and the Jets potentially not suck.

Actually that's the sobering thought to know I am not dreaming... the Jets do suck.

Well that's a very bad sign.

You don't watch sports television, read the newspapers, sports magazines or Internet very often, do you. Even your own blubbery gasbag coach has named the Patriots division favorites.
