Krieger: Broncos' Brandon Marshall much deeper than any caricature

Brandon Marshall (Denver Post file photo)It has been so easy, turning Brandon Marshall into a caricature. Bad guy. Bad teammate. Hothead. Diva.

And worse, sorta kinda responsible for teammate Darrent Williams' death. After all, he admitted escalating the nightclub confrontation with east Denver gang members that preceded the drive-by shooting of Williams' limousine. That's well known.

If you listened to all the testimony in the Williams murder trial, you know it's also simplistic. In addition to the role Marshall and his cousin played in the back-and-forth that night, there was also a recurring territorial dispute between the Denver Crips and Williams' friends, an aspiring rap group from Fort Worth, Texas.

Did Willie Clark pursue Williams' 40-foot white Hummer limousine rather than Marshall's standard Lincoln limo because of the territorial dispute? Because it was more ostentatious, more "disrespectful" to the hometown crew? Because it was the last to leave?

With Clark proclaiming his innocence after the conviction, we may never know. But the conclusion that Marshall's part in the nightclub altercation provided the primary motive for the shooting is not supported by the testimony.

Still, Marshall clearly had a role. By his own admission, he's haunted by it. That's less well known, so let's try to flesh out the caricature a bit.

The admission came early in his court testimony, when prosecutor Tim Twining directed his attention to that night by asking if he remembered it.

"I think about it every night," Marshall said.

In an era when few pro athletes are willing to sacrifice street cred by taking a stand against gangs, Marshall spent much of the 2008 NFL season donating one afternoon a week to Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives, the Rev. Leon Kelly's gang prevention program in northeast Denver.

Here is some of what he told the older kids, mostly middle school students, on his first visit, in June 2008:

"If you Google my name, you'll see a lot of negative things because I've made mistakes. So I'm not someone here talking to you guys because I'm Mr. Perfect. No. I'm from the same neighborhood you guys are from, the same type of environment, and I'm speaking to you guys from my heart and it's real.

"I have a younger sister, she has three kids now. She's 21. She had her first kid when she was 15. So my life isn't perfect. My family isn't perfect. I have family members who's locked up, family members on drugs. Our family isn't perfect. We've bumped our heads before.

"You have a chance to do some spectacular things in your life. What I'm saying is, take this time while you're young and become something. Make something of yourself.

"I don't want to live like my mom and my dad, or some of my family members, where it's week by week, check by check, where it's a struggle. You guys know how it is. No hot water. Bills ain't paid. No cellphone. No food in the 'frigerator. I been through it.

"I been through a whole winter where I didn't have no hot water, no heat. We heated up our house with the oven. I been through it. So I know what some of you guys are going through. I know it. I still have family that's going through the same thing. You don't want to live that way. You have a chance to make your own decisions and your own choices right now.

"What you guys need to do is really focus and get y'all grades and make something of y'all self. Don't run with the wrong crowd."

Near the end of this visit, Kelly asked Marshall to talk to the kids about the lessons of his teammate's murder.

"It just opens your eyes to finally realize that no matter how good you're doing or if you're doing positive things, there's so much that can be taken away from you like that. You never know. He never knew what hit him. He never knew what was going on. It's sad to say that.

"You guys just got to know that everyone in the world's not great. Everyone in the world is not trying to do good. So you've got to put yourself in good environments and good positions where you can't be hurt. Protect your feelings and protect yourself and always keep your eyes open. We lost a teammate, a friend, a father, so much. And it hurts."

Maybe it would be better for all concerned if Marshall got a fresh start elsewhere. That's the Broncos' call now.

But he is not a caricature. He is a bright, emotional, conflicted, accomplished athlete. And he has tried, through engagement with Open Door and his trial testimony, to compensate for whatever role he played in that tragedy more than three years ago.

Would a MOD please edit this post since it violates the copyright issues that are posted CLEARLY on the main forum page.

Sorry, strike two.

Moss has never been considered anywhere near T.O. level emotionally unstable or Brandon Marshall level entwined in the criminal underworld. No player who has played with Moss has ever questioned his desire to win or that he is a leader in the lockerroom.

No, even worse they questioned his effort on the field.

I agree that everyone here who is adamantly against Marshall and claims he is dirt (and bat**** or whatever else some of you are saying) had damn well better start keeping their beliefs consistent.

Some of you hate Marshall and whatnot and then want Owens (worse locker room problem and it's not close) or have nothing but positives to say about Moss.

I love Moss for the record, sometimes it just takes a player to be in the right atmosphere or maturation. Marshall is an ELITE talent, so it would be worth it.

T.O. = 1 year deal, nothing gambled but money

Marshall = multi-year, big money, deal or sulking player AND the loss of players/picks in return.

They are not the same, and there's nothing necessarily inconsistent about a pro T.O./anti-Marshall position.

There you go, it was 2006 in a typo someone else corrected so in anti-homer critic world that invalidates the point...LOL

Show me where I said your point was invalid? I didn't see that someone else corrected it, so I pointed it out.

Get the hell over it.

The Jets get to one flippin AFCCG and Patriots Nation needs a binky and a nap. I don't care if they sign the ghost of Walter Payton and Mean Joe Green all rolled into one. They are the Jets after all. Me personnally I can't wait to see them play with the pressure of all the expectations everyone's going to put on them. I can almost hear the mediots drooling over themselves about the mighty Jets. Their gonna melt..... Write it down.

Best post in the thread. They always disappoint, it's the only thing their fans can count on since SB III...41 years and counting.

Look, Brandon's attitude only turned sour when he saw his good friend and a great QB jettisened out to Chicago.

Well that certainly isn't true. Marshall was upset about his contract at least a year before that and was also upset that the team doctors had misdiagnosed an injury too.

No, even worse they questioned his effort on the field.

None of Randy's Raider Teammates question his effort. In fact, a few of them came out in SUPPORT of Randy after the coaches threw Randy under the bus.

Marshall's talent FAR outweighs Owens right now. And of course it's inconsistent, when your reasons for not wanting Marshall are because of locker room issues. If your reasons for Marshall were money and risk related, than fine. But when you tell me you don't want Marshall because we need a better lockerroom presence and then tell me you think we need Owens NOW, that is hypocritcal whether you can admit it or not.

So, in other words, you aren't willing to support your argument by providing proof. Gotcha.

No, I know what the rules are, and I'm not going to waste my time looking for it so you believe me. That's all.

and when he gets in trouble for wrestling

Again Sapp, and Brayton were very open about questioning effort on the field, but I was just notified what happened in Oakland doesn't count.

1.) The respective talent levels are irrelevant.

2.) I suggest a course in logic and one in English comprehension if you still maintain that the positions are inconsistent, because they clearly are not required to be so, as I noted in giving some possible reasons for people having different responses to each possibility.

So was Moss, and where is he playing now?

Moss never divided a locker room the way Marshall did last year after the Cutler trade.

Moss never was involved in a murder case.

Just keep on digging there.. You'll eventually get to China..

Look, Brandon's attitude only turned sour when he saw his good friend and a great QB jettisened out to Chicago. At that point Brandon knew the team really had no shot and he was angry. How would Vincent Jackson or Reggie Wayne feel if a guy they built up a rapport with on the field was sent packing especially a guy of Cutler's stature. Sure he was pissed and he was resentful towards Josh, why?, well because Josh made the mistake of leaking info he shouldn't have leaked and it came back to bite him in the arse and that poor choice ultimately alienated his talented WR.

If you put Brandon in this offense with Tom Brady you would see "the best" of Brandon Marshall because he knows that there is a big difference between Kyle Orton and THOF. Brandon wants to win like anyone else.

Moss and Marshall would give Tom Brady his elusive 4th ring...........Hello Joe Montana.........

Brandon was in trouble with Shanny and wanted a contract the prior season, which he didn't get then, either. And what ownership and the FO chooses to do is not his business. Turns out his team did have a shot, and a better one than they'd have had with Cutler who doesn't fit the system and is a jackhole to boot. Tom won three rings without any talent approaching Marshall's. Or any attitudes... Just a lot of unselfish teamwork. Once Branch decided he should be a diva all bets were off.

There is no way Bob Kraft signs off on bringing this kid here. He and Bill agreed before he signed him on that if acquiring thugs and hoodlums was the only way to win in the NFL, he'd just sell the team and find another sport to invest in.

And there is no way BB trades a #1 for the opportunity to reward this clown with a multi year deal when he's a risk to be suspended at any time because of his pre existing conduct and because he's already been scouted by Josh up close and deemed not worth the trouble let alone the $$$. And an owner he and Kraft respect in Pat Bowlen has already signed off on that assessment in Denver, too.

You clearly don't know what the rules are and you are too friggin lazy to support your own opinion.
