Just to counter that, Michael Griffin's having an awful year as well.

Meriweather and Tanard Jackson have been the pick of the bunch from 2007, and Jackson was a fourth rounder! Weddle's not bad, but the Chargers were expecting much more from him, and I'm not sure if they benched him recently.

Weddle's been injured; that's why Oliver's their starting FS.

Speaking of Weddle, if the "geniuses"(snicker) in the FO wanted a FS with their 1st-rounder in '07, they should've chosen him instead of Stomper. I personally would've taken RG/RT Justin Blalock, or ILBs David Harris, Jon Beason or Poz instead, because our FS of the future would already have been on the roster in the form of Antoine Bethea, who was still avail. with any of our 3 6th-rounders from the year before.

Weddle is their starter, he's only missed two games this year. He's got 1 int, and 0 forced fumbles.

Beason or Harris would have been great picks, but had we taken them, there is almost no chance we would have taken Mayo the year after that, and I could be incorrect but I'm pretty sure the blocking scheme run in atlanta is pretty different from the one run by the pats. Also in 07 we had Mankins playing like an All-Pro and a healthy Neal - offensive guard really wasnt a need.

There are certainly some great players we didn't draft in 07, but the good news is that since we DID take a safety, it's nice to know that compared to the other safeties in that draft, Meriweather is looking to be the best of the bunch

once again by that logic all 32 teams missed him the year before as well for 5 rounds... people who go back and give all these what ifs e.t.c and throw up names like beason who is a beast yet doesn't fit our scheme are ridiculous. its like saying bb is a fool for missing on james harrison. the patriots aren't the only team who hit (or miss for that matter) on late picks they are the exception not the rule. these people do this for a living, they know more than you

Meriweather breaks up passes (20, 8 this year and 9 last year).

Meriweather intercepts the ball (8, 4 this year and 4 last year).

Meriweather has forced fumbles (4).

Meriweather has done all this in 3 years with only a year and a half as a full starter.

Meriweather is one of the better SS in coverage. Right now, I would only put Polamulu, Dawkins, Collins, and Reed above him. That's it.

Again, what does draft position have to do with his production? That's the same lame excuse Maroney haters use. And to use the Landry-Meriweather comparison is stupid because Landry has been a starter since 2006 while Meriweather didn't start until 2008. Even if you want to use that argument, Meriweather has had much more production in shorter time then Landry.

if you could take a reliable everydown safety with 4.5 years of starting service on a rookie contract in the late 1st, its a good pick. Not everyone can be a pro-bower. If any good player in this system dresses for a full season in the defensive backfield, its a step in the right direction around here.

One thing you don't want to be labeled as is an error repeater. Coaches always tell players they can make mistakes, just not to be error repeaters. Safety Brandon Meriweather was an error repeater against the Panthers. On Steve Smith's 41-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter, some might have noticed the play looked familiar; it was very similar to what the New Orleans Saints ran against the Patriots when Robert Meachem caught a 38-yard touchdown. It was a post route with an over route from the other side of the field as the bait. Players have a saying for this: "Don't take the cheese." But Meriweather took the cheese and jumped the over route again. The job title is safety, which means last line of defense. In certain coverages, the safety is the only player in the deep middle of the field and has to stay there. This is a copycat league, and teams will keep trying this against the Patriots. It might have looked different, out of a different formation, but it's the same concept and the concepts have to be recognized as the play develops.

I just don't think evaluating Brandon as a SS is the right way to look at it. I still think he becomes the FS and Chung becomes the SS. Bill didn't take Chung to sit the bench though he may have taken him to play them both in the box ... but I doubt it ... Brandon will move back to make room for Patrick at SS.

Meriweather is only in his 2nd full season. We've seen some improvements and some mistakes. There are always going to be growing pains. I think he's had a pretty good year for us and I think he will develop into one of the better FS in the league in the next few years. He definitely has the physical tools to be great, he's just prone to some mental lapses and over-aggressiveness. Asante was the same way when he was young. Even now if you watch an Eagles' game Asante sometimes bites on a double move because he tries to jump routes. I'd rather have an over-aggressive guy who is trying to be a playmaker than a guy who is just going to sit back, keep everything in front of him, and tackle guys after a 25 yard gain.

I loved Meriweather coming out of the U, I was elated when we got him, and he's my favorite defensive player on the Pats. He's going to be one of the better safeties in the game in the next few years, just be patient. Besides the mental lapses and missed tackles every now and then, he needs to improve on his consistency. In some games he'll be all over the place, breaking up passes, picking balls off, forcing fumbles, laying the wood on WR's. Then in some games he's basically invisible, just going through the motions and not really making any plays around the ball. I had very high hopes for Meriweather, and so far I've been satisfied. I expect 2010 to be the year he asserts himself and really takes over as a leader on this defense and makes the Pro Bowl.
